I bought vitamins at Walmart this morning. I have a bit of sticker shock. The good news is that we will use them.
Katla in Sunny NW Oregon
Vitamins aren't cheap huh! We get ours at Rite Aid, and do the buy one get one free thing. We go thru Calcium carbonate fast because Lee takes it 3 times a day. We both are on the same multi-vitamin so that's nice, and also the Calcium with a D3 thing. He also take Vitamin E, magnesium, baby asprin, and the rest are prescriptions. Did I state I AM PILL QUEEN... hahaha.
Rebecca
Ha! I read "Calcium carbonate fast" as a new kind of diet fast. Maybe I need a nap!!
I appreciate you, Rebecca!

Ok I am picturing myself as a lava science fair project run amuck!
Husband: Dear, you look like a rabid dog!
Me: oh its just my calcium carbonate fast working......
Husband: Ok I'm not taking you anywhere...... LOL!

As we're getting closer to the end of 2020, I'll ask this question ...
What are some of your highlights of 2020?
Good things. Happy things. Accomplishments.
Some of my highlights include:
- finishing my degree
- working from home for 4 months
- Rhody
- having my deviated septum surgery
- distancing and the focus on cleanliness and hygiene
- quiet holidays
- fewer hassles and less stress for my husband
- discovering ABC Classic FM
- organised several successful cycling events
M in Oz
Several of you have mentioned how well you and your partners have gotten along during this time, and that's another good thing for us too.
As we were going into working from home, and staying home, for 4 months I wondered how it would go. In a way, going to work was a break for me. But those 4 months were wonderful! My husband and I got along really well, and I was able to see how things were going for him on a 24-hour basis.
Those 4 months were probably my best 4 months in years! In addition to what I've written above, I was able to get 8 hours of sleep a night, get out and exercise (especially cycling) in the middle of the day, clean the house more and work at my own pace. I got up to running 5 km several times. Lost weight and felt so much better. When I returned to work, I regained what I had lost so I ended up the same at the beginning and end of the year.
I am actually hoping for another 4 month shutdown this coming winter. But it probably won't happen.

⁃ I think one of the biggest highlights for me is how well Rodger and I have gotten through this year being more on top of one another than we are used to. I have found myself very stressed throughout different stages of the year and he’s been my rock throughout.
⁃ I’m incredibly proud of how my eldest daughter has handled this year. She has always struggled and doubted her parenting skills. She has shone through this.
⁃ My youngest daughter and her husband have a new house and a new puppy.
⁃ My Mom has stayed safe.
⁃ Even though we couldn’t see each other as often as we normally would I think the visits we did have were even more cherished and meaningful.
Susie - the song at my Dad’s funeral sort of described how happy our loved ones are waiting for us to join them. One of the lines is “I’ll be sitting drawing pictures in the sand”.
Kelly - what a wonderful face to get a call from.
Heather - so happy your son’s family is negative. If they paid extra for 24 hour results they should receive something back. We don’t pay for them here and there is no way of getting results faster than someone else unless you are in hospital or work in healthcare and are showing symptoms. Even our prevalence screening each week is not rushed. We get our results 2-4 days after the test.
Rebecca - I teared up reading about your post of hearing from your Mom. We moved away and it became our responsibility to be the one to keep in contact except for my Dad. He called me weekly. For many, many years on Saturday nights because the phone company had a 2.00 talk as long as you want deal those nights. Once I had unlimited long distance he would call me even more, he would let the phone ring twice so the number displayed and then I would call him back. I miss our chats, and other than my best friend no one calls now. I do all of the checking in, so I know how you feel about the family. My heart hurts for you about your son not calling though. You are handling it much better than I would I think.
Katla - is the book series Virgin River what the Netflix Series is based on?
Terri - you have worked so hard at keeping your weight off and it’s worked. Congratulations.
I went and borrowed my eldest daughter’s sewing machine and took a lot of her scraps today. I have to make 6 mattresses, 6 pillows and 6 blankets for a birthday present for Michaela. Rodger is making her two bunk bed sets, each three beds high, for her babies. She has 6 and doesn’t think they should share a bed. She has been using the stairs but with her mother having fall issues this is not safe.
I bought flannel and quilt batting today and will try to get them completed by Saturday. It may end up being my New Year’s Day project.
I am doing some laundry now and should have started it much earlier in the day. It may not all get done tonight. I have enough clothes for 3 days of work so I’m fine if it doesn’t get finished.
Tracey in Edmonton
Awe Tracy, your phone chats with your Dad made a nice imprint on your memory. I know after my Mom passed I would stare at the phone, thinking I need to call someone, but the person I wanted to call, would never answer. I did call my mother in law, and she helped me so much, letting me vent etc. I knew her before I met her son, my husband. So I truly think of her as Mom now. She is 84 years old now, and tough as nails.

Since the start of the pandemic and now the holidays I'm up about 5-7 pounds but I have the situation under control now.
Love you my friends,

Some long promised photos! First, some masks that I made, same pattern, just some "regular" ones and some Christmas ones. A few photos of the doll cradle that hubby made for our granddaughter, she is a doll, but still doesn't quite fit into the cradle, although she certainly gave it her all! I forgot to take a photo of our grandson with the planes that hubby made and DS has not emailed one as of yet. I shall have to rattle his cage tomorrow. I will be out and about, maybe I'll see if I can pop over and take my own photo. Sneaky way to see the kids for a minute or two!
Some very random remembers..... sorry, I have been reading, but not replying (hangs head in shame)
Janet, I shall have to take the batteries out of my scale soon! lol
Kelly, I love, love, love my toaster oven! Other than the obvious toast, I also have made pork chops and other main courses meats in there when it was way too hot to start up the oven, heating up leftover pizza and of course nothing else comes to mind now.... I do use mine most days. Love the photo of the boys!
Heather, love the guinea pig pj's for the girls.
Allie, so glad you are at home, there really is nothing like sleeping in your own bed! And it's better for you to be where you can rest. I'm hoping that you will be able to bring Alfie home soon too.
Tracey, good to hear from you! Hoping that the outbreak at your facility is under control soon.
Positive things from the past year:
I did not lose any pay even tho my hours were cut at the beginning of the pandemic - our owner elected to continue to pay us as tho we were working our regular hours. It was a huge weight off our shoulders and I made sure to tell him so!
We saved a lot of money, no going out for dinner, no hair, nail, chiro or massage appointments and especially at the beginning, not much money on gas either - rode my bike to work several times and wasn't going anywhere else. Did spend more money on groceries, but figured I should spend it on something, and that we deserved to eat well if we had to stay home.
While we didn't see the grands at all for the first 2 months, our regulations were relaxed after that and we have been seeing them pretty regularly since then (even tho the regs tightened up again). Our DIL is working from home, DS isn't working, his job was a casualty of the pandemic, and they're not going anywhere either, so we feel pretty safe spending some time with them.
I'm sure there's more, but that's all I got for now.
Has anybody heard anything from Lisa?
As always, hugs for those who need them, congrats to those celebrating and welcome to the newbies!

After three days of dark days and heavy rain looks like Storm Bella has finally blown itself out. Looking forward to getting out for a walk later this morning.
Ginny: Good news about the pension. That should ease finances a little for you.
Allie: (((Hugs))) Thankful that you are back in the peace of your own.
Just heard last night that a close teaching colleague passed away. No details yet. She was much younger than me and just recently retired.

Regained a little in the rank on Black Lane! Just about threw up in the attempt! I'm now 7th/11 among the women who have ridden the road. Pretty sure I had dropped to 11th place.
It wasn't a brilliant attempt but not bad considering how out of shape I feel.

I am usually the one who initiates phone calls with our daughter and her family. I enjoy talking with them, and don’t mind paying for long distance calls. We have been taking advantage of the magic of zoom calls whenever possible.
If you go back to regular calling there are many free apps that allow free calling now: WhatsApp is the most common but there are also googlemeet and others.
good things that happened in 2020:
-we have been able to save away some money. Always a good feeling, especially now with COVID
...,
Rebecca
Washington
I have read that many people who have maintained regular income have saved since the beginning of Covid: no/less eating out, no/little travelling, less/no non-essential shopping...Julie-the 3 inches in height difference does impact things some (for some reason I was thinking you are taller than me!). Some of the ladies on here pointed out that BMI as we age is viewed differently. Yes, my BMI is @23 most days. My doctor prefers it doesn’t drop much more-I guess as we age we need a bit of body fat. However, how you feel is important and I know just 5 pounds can change that. Just don’t want you to beat yourself up! As the pandemic winds down and life returns to something like normal and you are walking as you did before I am sure you will get back to where you are more comfortable. Congrats on tracking three days in a row-I really think that helps.
SuziQ-don’t know if is that I am handy or spent so many years married to a cheap man! Plus, we always thought when money was tight, we would fix what we could. (since we saved money then, I don’t mind paying for getting some things done now!)
Allie-your progress sounds good, and a bit speedy given what you have been through (even though I am sure to you it is slow as molasses).
Good for the year/accomplishments
-Interior doors replaced (haven’t painted them yet)
-DIL seems to have recovered from Covid with no long term side effects
-While several staff have had Covid and two have been hospitalized, no one has passed from it (220 staff)
-Maintained my weight
-Got some stuff cleaned out (more to go)
-Maintained contact with ladies group at church which provides good support
-Kept up with this group for the most part!
-Have not gone into complete isolation even though I live alone
-Contacted social security today (realized last month I did hit full retirement age of 66) and I can, indeed, draw my husbands social security while I am working with no income restrictions. Official on-line application is in February, but it will retro back to November.
As long as we are here, have a tremendous gift.
Take care all,
Ginny in Ohio
Thanks Ginny. I know BMI of 25 is not so bad for an American woman in late 50s. In France people are a bit slimmer on average so that comes into play. The average BMI in France is about 23 according to some stats.(28 in the usa). I am not beating self up about that so much, but am not happy about the results. I'm more unhappy about not getting things done.
I can be fairly handy too when active. It does help save money, and I can enjoy handiwork.
Some of you have mentioned things you're grateful for in 2020 in addition to highlights.
I can add: maintaining job and salary.
Having warm, safe home, bed, food.
No-one very close to me has been seriously hurt by the disease itself.

Morning, afternoon and evening, all...
Missed y'all more than you know as I worked through a couple things... none of which are worth mentioning, so I won't.
Catching up a little:
Rori, it was so good to see you and Mars. I think of you often.
Allie, I'm so glad you're home!
Julie, you've made it through a really tough year... while we have all had our struggles, I'm so glad you were able to find this group. You bring much to it.
Heather, you are, as always, a bright and shining light. I can only aspire to have your energy and drive when I reach your age.
Tracey - so glad you and your Roger have grown closer over this insane year for us all.
JanetR - So pleased to see you again, as well as your snowman! I miss you when you're absent.
Evie - Thanks for asking, love the masks and the cradle.
Rebecca - Love your spirit. Your posts always lift mine.
Kim - talking to you has been a bright light for me as well this month. I appreciate it every time you reach out.
There's just no way I can catch up with everyone, even though so many of you are so good at doing it. More power to those of you like SuziQ who do reach out to all... you're part of what holds us all together and keeps us coming back. Thank you.
Machka - my happy things of 2020:- Retiring two years earlier than I expected.
- Writing again.
- My daughter's help during a few really dark months brought us closer than I even knew was possible. I continue to marvel at how she's grown, and how strong she's become.
- While the year has been a roller coaster, weight-wise, I'm leaving it 26 pounds lighter than I came into it, and 34 pounds lighter than my highest weight in March.
Do love y'all,
Lisa in Arkansas8 -
Lisa - You make me sound ancient! Glad to see you again.
Horrible, c o l d, brrrr weather here. Damp and grey. Our house doesn't do well when it's really cold. Too many draughts. Never mind. I'm indoors, big, thick, long cardigan on, and I did 700 words this morning. Writing about an old boyfriend I used to visit regularly in Brighton when I was 16. Every time I walk past the square he lived in I remember him. He died age 24. I was not with him by then, but I did go out with him for two and a half years.
I loved Brighton and Hove even then.
Love to all, Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Lisa, It is so great to hear from you again. You have weathered a lot this year and lived to tell about it.
Allie, picking up groceries, resting, and PT sound like exactly what you should be doing. You are wise to let someone else care for Alfie until you are more recovered.
I focus on gratitude every morning as part of my breakfast routine. I write a few things down in on a small calendar and reflect on the joy of my life. My needs have all been met, my health is good, I have a few people I speak to in person and many I see via Zoom, I have all of you to support and encourage me, and I have strong spiritual practices that help me travel this rocky road.

Good morning ladies, not much going on here today. I have been doing most of my exercise on a stationary bike. I ordered a new one from Amazon at the end of May and have put over 1,000 miles on it. It also has a heart monitor and all that, but the reason I chose it was because it also has resistance bands on a pulley system that I can do upper body workout while pedaling. My oldest daughter has decided she needs one
Lisa, dear lady, I think of you so often. When I first found our group in June 2015 it was your lively, always intriguing, posts when living in southwest TX that kept me coming back. I feel we've shared quite a life journey in that time.
2020 things I'm celebrating:
Husband and I are both healthy
My oldest daughter (CPA) that moved here from Denver almost a year ago, is doing well and all three of her children are here now also. She just received a $3,000 bonus before Christmas. She seems to be getting her life back together after her very painful divorce a year ago.
All of the kids and grands have been able to continue working through the pandemic, a true God-send.
Love you ladies,

5th day or so tracking. that does help. slow to get up today.
Things I'm grateful for:
-I love going for a walk. I really enjoy it.
-I like being still able to get an espresso at the neighborhood bakery for 1.20. The lady there is very friendly. She even gave me a free pastry one day!
-having very very reasonably priced organic shops 20 seconds and 1 minute walk from front door of my building. They have organic carrot juice for less than 3 euros a liter. Carrots for 2 euros a kilo today...basic fruits and veggies and soy products are very reasonably priced.
-still for home, especially living area that is so much more spacious
-new shoe rack, (looks SO much better)
- very reasonable rent
- new little round table
- comfy bed
- good entertainment often on Netflix. (just discovered teen-awareness, but appreciable to adults cartoon called "big mouth". I would have LOVED to see that when I was a young teen. It's a very comical but deep take on going through puberty, with some main roles played by well-known comedians).
- my friend J.
- my friend T.
- washing machine (I had few years way back when without one-- it's SO nice to have one).
- My 3 indoor green plants have been doing well for years, and growing nicely, and are very forgiving when I don't water them much.
- Xmas break
- Health care coverage
- Many (most?) of my students
- New shelves
- big windows and plenty of natural light
- lots of hiking and camping in my youth when that was easier (I could sleep easily anywhere with a very thin camp mat as long as my sleeping bag was warm enough).
- quiet moments
- some pleasant neighbors
- neighbours are very quiet
-no more all night parties from young neighbours across street since COVID.

arg! long long post!
4 habits per week, to develop on my datebook
this week
meditating: good yesterday. tried walking meditation today but mostly was just walking not so much meditating.
15 min cleaning and tidying. doing great here at the moment! started rather clean so just put away a few things, (coats, etc). and had time to hang a framed painting and a full length mirror that had been on floor propped against the wall for ages. very happy about that.
15 min paper work: I lit a candle I had around before starting . I used to do this sometimes when working alone at home, and the ritual of it somehow helped. I am SOOOOOOO far behind n paperwork but I just set timer and did 15 minutes. A tiny dent but better than nothing. I stopped after 15 min. I just went top down. filed a few files, put stamps on 2 post cards written LONG ago!! put a note with my number in complimentary health insurance for reimbursement of 40 euros by osteopath. all 3 near the door to send during next walk.
put away a few things.
also beyond 15 min : bought food, put away food and and did a load of laundry, put away laundry, put out trash.
tracking food: good this week
at present on stationary bike pedalling at about 100 HR or so as I write.
my resting HR is about 60 so 100 is something.
when not typing I can go faster.7 -
Bananas - Great that you can type to us while on your bike. I usually catch up on a TV programme I've missed, or play my language videos while I'm rowing after lunch. The German video was about how to lose weight. Great fun. The guy was walking slowly on the treadmill and playing video games through a headset! He said he can go for a hour without getting bored.
Making exercise part of your everyday life is the key so it doesn't feel like an extra chore.
Love Heather UK xxxxxxxx

Worked today and work tomorrow
One thing I’m really proud of this year is that Jess is pursuing her dream and she hasn’t let Colby derail her. I was really afraid that he would be a (unintended) distraction, but that hasn’t proven to be the case. Yes, we saved money not only on needing to buy less gas since there were lots of places we couldn’t go to that we usually do. Another way we’re saving money is that since I couldn’t go to the hairdressers for months, I didn’t realize how much gray I had so now instead of having to buy coverup, I’m just letting my hair grow out to its natural color. Another thing I’m grateful for is that I started working at Food Lion. Got me to be with people. I tell a lot of people that I feel blessed in that I know I’ll do the best job I can and if it isn’t good enough…too bad. One gal who is evidently some sort of person who checks up on people was saying today that I’m the best cleaner she has. Is that so? I don’t know. But still…I’ll do the best job I can and if it isn’t good enough…the mortgage will still get paid and the food will still be bought. I’m also grateful that no one near me has gotten Covid and been very sick. I’m grateful that so far I haven’t contracted it (that I know of). I’m in pretty good health over all.
I asked them at Food Lion today if there was a way that I could get another mask since the one I have keeps falling down. I was told that they needed the masks they have for the new hires and they suggested that I sew the mask so that it doesn’t fall down. I hate having to wear a different mask, but I may have to. I know they want you to wear the FL mask, but as soon as I leave work I take the mask off and wash it. I can’t be doing laundry every other day. I know one guy who just couldn’t wear the mask so I may ask him if I can have his
Janetr – LOL, thanks for the smile
The gal who is the manager at FL had me go home early today. Seems one of the higher-ups told her to try to cut hours, and since we were slow she let me go home early. I guess she knows that if I go home early, it’s really not going to impact me. I feel bad for the people who are there to make a rent payment, etc
After work went to WalMart for a prescription for Vince, went to Dollar Tree and Dollar General. Neither store had any New Years items. I was thinking I’d take a hat or glasses or something like that to the Newcomer bowling tomorrow night, but I guess I won’t. Well, that’s a few dollars I saved (I’m trying to look on the bright side)
Lisa – good to hear from you
Allie – you do so much for everyone else, I’m glad they are paying you back
I’m feeling so much better getting back to decent eating.
Ken & Lynette will be here for NYE like they always are. I'm thinking of having a pork loin that I'll make in the IP, macaroni & cheese since I know Lynette likes that and Jess will eat leftovers, but what vege would they like? I know they like corn but, honestly, I'm getting sick of corn all the time. Maybe I'll ask Lynette if there's another vege that they'd like. I think I have some of the spinach/feta left over, we can have that too. And if I'm the only one who will eat it...I'm the only one who will eat it.
If Vince ever knew that I didn't wear the boot, he'd have a heart attack. He said last night "if I see that boot here, I'm driving down to FL and making you wear it". So I put it in the car. OK, like a 5-year-old, but this is going on a month now and I'm sick of it.
Off to Aldi since we need ground beef since Jess wants to make a shepherds pie. If she weren't here, I wouldn't bother. But I do want her to feel that she's contributing and since she's not working......

Tracey: As I understand it, the Virgin River series of books will be, or are, available through Netflix. I am reading the newest book, have read all of the earlier books and own the set. The most recent book I bought says Netflix, a Netflix original series on the cover. I’ve never seen the Netflix program. :flowerforyou:
JanetR: I love the message on weight management. I haven’t actually taken the batteries out of my scale, but I haven’t set foot on it in a while.
Evie: The masks are beautiful!
Barbara: I love the idea of a hike. I haven’t done anything that positive in too long.
Machka: Congrats on your bike ride. 26.5 km is a significant achievement.
Barbie: “I focus on gratitude every morning as part of my breakfast routine. I write a few things down in on a small calendar and reflect on the joy of my life. My needs have all been met, my health is good, I have a few people I speak to in person and many I see via Zoom, I have all of you to support and encourage me, and I have strong spiritual practices that help me travel this rocky road.” You have a clear and positive perspective. Thank you for your continuing leadership.
Lisa: So good to see your post!!!
Pip: Thinking of you. I hope you are well and enjoying life.
Allie: I am happy that you are getting the support you need for your health situation. YAY!
I have not been as active as I’m used to. I need more exercise, and I have the means to do it in my own garage. I need to give myself a dose of Pip’s boot. I'll be out in the garage riding my tryke on it's trainer ASAP.
