I think what finally kicked me into gear was my parents. My dad had a massive stroke at 56 and is now paralyzed and unable to speak (almost 10 years ago now). He needs constant care with eating, bathing, toileting, etc. My mom was diagosed at 55 with Kearnes-Sayre Syndrome. (a genetic disorder discovered later in life) I watch both of them suffer through daily activities and know that both of them would give anything to have their health. I realized that I am blessed with my health (no serious issues yet) and am wasting it. I also would never forgive myself for not taking care of myself and putting my daughter through what we have gone through.
My motivation was similar - mom is 400 lbs and had a stroke. I care for her, and do not want to put anyone else through this for me. You can't control a lot of bad stuff happening, but being significantly overweight makes it so much harder for you and your caregivers.8 -

HA! Oddly enough I fart less; which as a dad who's "dad humor" primarily involves the word "fart" isn't necessarily a good thing..11 -
This isn't weight loss specific but before I began working out regularly I didn't sweat much. I live in the desert and even high summer I didn't sweat much. Now I sweat a lot. Not only when I'm working out either but whenever I become slightly overheated.6

Increasing one's metabolic rate can do that. Great job.

I fart like a trooper these days. My poor husband wonders who he married methinks. My nephews on the other hand think it's hilarious.4 -

I totally understand this. It's almost unsettling sometimes. I'll get a glimpse of a body part and be like "wait, that's me?" It's so odd to go from seeing yourself one way for so long to something completely new and foreign.3 -
I wonder if I'm the only one here with this one but...
Wanting food to make you happy when you're not, and you're unable to, as food is no longer there for you, other than to nourish your body
Does that make sense?! If you were to ask me last year- what do you enjoy doing, what's your favorite hobby/activity? EATING!! It made me (temporarily) relieved of stress and it was something I looked forward to.. Pretty much the only thing I looked forward to for fun!
Now when I'm bored, and I have an off day once a week to get a little craving out of the way, or a family member is diagnosed with cancer/other things life throws at you, and your stomach just doesn't WANT food for comfort... BUT YOUR BRAIN DOES! And you don't know what to do! Because food was your life, and now it's not, and it's time to get out and find something that makes you happy!
Physical changes and having to deal with the mental changes just being a tad bit behind!
Yes 100%. I used to use food to cope with emotions, I used to stuff myself every night to be able to fall asleep. And now it's strange to deal with everything without food to lean on.5 -
How bad sleeping in feels. Means it's harder to get in 10000 steps20

How easy it is to gain weight back
I gained about 11 lbs since my lowest recorded weight of 178 lbs And now I'm kicking myself but can't find the motivation to get back into my routine that lead me to lose 40 lbs...17 -
I've seen it mentioned a few times throughout the thread; being more comfortable actually saying things like "I'm hungry", or "I feel like ice cream" to people, even your close friends. Before, if I said that it felt like they would do a mental eye roll, or a sarcastic "yeah, sure". Maybe all in my head, but it made me really self-conscious, and I'm so glad its lessening.27

very inspirational post, I have lost and regained on and off for the last few decades, so now am trying to loose and work on all the 'other' issues, so as not to regain what I am loosing this time. I can now admit that I am an emotional eater. I am a work in progress.8

Just the opposite in my case. Walking a 1/4 mile daily down a steep hill and back up has helped me to develop some leg muscles. Once I had to hold on to something just to step on the scales and not I can just hop on without thought. Maybe it is because I do not have to lean forward to see the readout.7 -
How you may subconsciously self-sabotage and maintain loss in the middle of a larger goal because of fear. Instead of allowing yourself to push past, and lose even more weight, fear keeps you stuck or yo-yoing those few last pounds before moving onto a larger goal. Thankfully we can give ourselves permission to persevere and shed the security blanket.38

I'm only on day 6 so far, but this thread has been one heck of an inspiration to me. My biggest fear is loose skin, I am 6'4" and (roughly) 340 pounds so I have a metric snot ton to drop and I am terrified that I am going to look like a sharpei but that fear is not going to hold me back, thank you all for the inspiration.

Omgosh, thank you for this! I think this is me. I know I've been sabotaging myself from losing more but I just can't figure out why. I'm in the middle of it and it's nice to know this is something other people go through too. I'm really hoping I can give myself permission to persevere and get past this hump. Thank you!13 -

I completely understand what you mean about the loose skin. After 3 kids and gaining a total of 70 lbs over the years I am finally on the losing side. The trouble is that I have already started to see the flabby skin problem especially with me stomach. There are some outfits and dresses I have that I have to wear a girdle with not bc of fat but bc of loose skin hanging or sagging or jiggling. Anyone have any tips to help combat this problem?

Sorry to say I don;t have any tips, other than the words of a surgeon who said you need to give the body 2 years to shrink, readjust as much as it can before you know where you will end up. I have over 130lb to lose, I'm 5'7", and 17 lb down, I can already see that I will be like a wrinkly prune- all over. And I'm sad and scared about that.
I'm going to have to wear little girdles and things as Arwen is saying. Mostly, when my fear rises I try to remind myself, that its better I can run along the beach, even if I have to girdle up so as not to wobble all over the place inside my clothes, than not be able to run.
Its better my grand children to be get to make fun of my wrinkly skin as I am rolling around with them, than either me not being here at all, or, unable to roll around with them.
And, as much as I'm scared of starting a new relationship with someone and letting them see /feel me naked when I am all wrinkled, - I get it's not the most attractive thing - I kind of feel like the loose skin will be like my battle scars - like the way an old persons wrinkled face shows the lines of their life's story - and as much as i would have preferred I not have created this life story- I did - and these are the wrinkles that will show that story of my life.39 -
@FitToLead I definitely understand what you are saying. I have lots of surgical scars and stretch marks from my babies and I wear them like a badge of honor bc they remind me of my life's journey. Surgery to remove the extra skin or gettin a tummy tuck is the last resort if I can't get my skin back to a place I am comfortable with. I know it's not gonna be perfect but as long as I feel good and confident about myself in the end that's all that matters to me in regards to this issue. I did read that wearing girdles while losing weight and working out can help keep the skin in place while it shrinks back down...also moisturizing every day with a good firming cream can help as well...or so I'm told.
I'm 5 ft 7 as well however your goal is much more ambitious than mine and I applaud you for it. My long term goal is 40 lbs but my short term goal is 15. Please feel free to add me so we can support each other on our journeys1 -

My average weight most of my life was in the 265-275 range at 5' 10".
On at least 4 occasions I lost down to about 180 and never had any problems with excess skin.
I think the last time I did that I was in my late 40s. Now at 64 I am at it again, hopefully for the last time, and I am definitely going to have excess skin when I am done.
So age and how long I have been too heavy have definitely played a part for me.
I think you are young enough that you will be ok but of course that is only an opinion.
