Headed out after dropping the kiddos off - fall can't get here soon enough
It was just after 8am and it was HOT. 80 degrees and full on sun. I ran to the high school track and did my intervals. I told myself that even if I have to "jog" my intervals I'd be ok with it because at least I am out there getting the mileage in. I didn't do too bad - averaged about a 7:30 pace for my quarter mile "sprints". After 16 "sprints" I headed back home for a 2 mile cool down.
I'm looking at my calendar and realize my next half marathon is only a month away... I really hope it's a cool morning for it! In my head, I'm telling myself I'm not running it for a PR. Just to have fun and get another medal to hang on my wall

I ran in the rain today. It was really my first time to run in rain that was more than just a few sprinkles. Although it was a pretty light rain. I ran 4.5 miles over all. It was a pretty good run. It started out difficult though. It was 76F but the humidity was 84% and the dew point was oppressive at 72. It rained during the 4th mile and it felt pretty good. But it stopped before I got home and the humidity and the dew point were 86% and 74 so it was a little worse after the rain. It is raining now and we have a chance of rain for the rest of the week. We really do need it, but I hope that I will still be able to get my scheduled runs in this week. Rain like this morning was ok. But I don't know how I feel about starting out if it is raining. And I am not running if there is lightening.
@PastorVincent I can't imagine schools closing because of the heat. But I am in Texas, and I also cannot imagine buildings with no A/C.
@sarahthes and @juliet3455 It is hard for me to imagine that y'all are already getting cool enough for frost. It really doesn't feel like fall around here to me, except my allergies are starting to bother me so I know that it is September.
@mbaker566 Your dogs are adorable. Mine are too lazy to run with me. This is them this morning while I did yoga.
They do like to go on walks with me though as long as it's not too hot.

I will run in the late afternoon today. First day of school here too! It was a bit chilly hanging around outside as they sorted everyone into the right line for their new class. My 6 year old only has a few kids from last year in his class but he seemed more excited than hesitant - huge change from last year when I literally had to peel him off my leg!
Next year my little one starts kindergarten and I don't think I'm quite ready for that...15 -
Hi everyone,
August started good but from the 15th went downhill. My sister and family came to stay for a week so house in chaos, spent the following week trying to catch up on work before 4 days in London which was brilliant. I was sad to read about losing @KeepRunningFatboy. I've put my name in for 1 hour 1600 - 1700 GMT. If I've filled it in wrong someone can change it for me. Going to give 50 miles another bash. 2018 has been a rubbish running year for me but will have to keep trying anyway. Hopefully back soon with some miles.

@MegaMooseEsq i know our fair has had a few issues but they are pretty quick about addressing them. hopefully, your fair will do the same.
i know our management rubs some people the wrong way but i suppose that is natural for a business trying to organize 20+ small businesses
@kgirlhart they are lazy dogs overall but they love to go for a run. it was part of the reason i started to run(bad collie). plus running in the city, they are added security. running has given speed demon so much confidence as she was pretty feral when i adopted her. old girl looks at it as a job and is better behaved when running as opposed to walking(extremely leash reactive).

I think I am finally getting over this sinus infection or whatever it was. Tomorrow was a planned rest day because of a baseball game tonight SO I am starting my September miles on the 6th. I am so far behind on marathon training but I am going to attempt to get back on track!10

The week-three jump to three minutes of running at a time has been tough. I am already stressing about the next leap to five minutes in a few days. I've realized that I have to go slower than feels natural, and I accept that I'm a slowpoke, but it's still difficult to properly pace myself. I always want to do too much too soon. My goal this time around is to get to 30 minutes of running without walking and stay there for a while before I register for any races or aim for longer distances. I've never done any running without a goal race before. It's hard not to register for any.
My son starts his fourth year of university today. I wish he would let me take a picture of him. So cute. I miss those days when he was small, and I really miss the Dairy Queen we would get on the first and last day of school.
I start swimming lessons with my husband tonight. I can swim a little but am not great in deep water. He can swim a little but he can't float. I had to rescue him in the pool on our last big holiday, so we decided lessons were a good idea. Wish us luck!10 -

On schools, heat and air conditioning. When I was a kid in Idaho we did not have A/C in any of the schools that I am aware of. There was never a day off for extreme heat even though it was often over 100F in September. The teachers would allow us to make and decorate little fans (which we typically then used to hit each other 🤣). I do remember all the windows being opened and enjoying hearing all the birds and sounds of other kids playing. We did have hot lunches available in our cafeterias but I usually took a lunch as my mom didn’t like the nutritive balance of the lunches - heavy on fats and carbs and not much fresh vegetables or fruit.
@kgirlhart and @mbaker566 - I got Hobbes the Vizsla specifically to run with me (planned on a new puppy but wanted one that could be a running partner). He is basically a lazy dog too but if he doesn’t run and have other mental stimulation he gets the crazy zoomies and into everything.
@RunsOnEspresso - glad you are feeling a bit better!
@juliet3455 - sorry about your garden! So jealous though of the cold temps! We are having more heat and it is supposed to be well into the 90s For at least a week.
We are headed up the coast for a few days. Have my running routes all plotted out in the different places we are visiting... we’ll see how much I actually get done. We have Hobbes with us though so will definitely need to get a few runs in to calm his craziness! I haven’t posted it yet but I got a few miles in yesterday. I think I am around 13 miles so far for the month.6 -

Go slow! Go slower than you feel like you need to. I am a slow runner - I just got down to a 15:51 mile outside and was ready to do a backflip. I can push myself to a 15-minute mile on a treadmill but it’s not pretty. Your speed will naturally increase as you run more. And honestly, the biggest challenge for me with c25k is convincing my head that my legs can keep going.5 -

@eponine1984 Thanks! Yes, I feel exactly the same. It is part legs and part just convincing myself it can be done. I like the treadmill and going a steady pace as I cannot do that at all outside ... but I hate how slowly time passes on the treadmill and driving to the gym to use it.

Original plan for today: drive home from TN to PA. Rescheduled plan: stay in TN and continue visiting with my sister. Rest, rehydrate. I seem to be hit the worst by the stomach bug - we suspect food poisoning. Once the sun goes down we might venture outside for a little walk around the neighborhood.7

I genuinely hope you're right about that. We've got one of the oldest and largest fairs in the country (ETA: If you've ever read the Sandman comic from the 90s, it's got an issue based on the MN fair), which comes with its own set of issues. Well, if I have to find a bright side, my legs will be fresher for those long runs between races!3 -
Morning! A gentle 5k for me this morning. My butt and thighs are really sore after a lifting session Monday night (it's Wed morning now). I forgot to take my asthma preventer last night so woke at 3am, short of breath. Used my inhaler and went to the bathroom, i could hardly walk down the stairs! So I turned off my alarm (set for 5:30am) and thought a rest day was probably appropriate. Managed to get to sleep some time after 4am, then woke abruptly at 530am anyway. So got up and went since I was awake. I dressed for rain but it didn't happen on my run, it held off till I finished haha. It was not a fast 5k, my butt was too sore for that lol.

My schedule is a bit out of sorts after the Monday holiday, so I had to work in my strength training this morning. I didn't give myself enough time once again to get much of a run in before that. But my coach says consistency is king, and anything 15 minutes or more counts as a run. So I did that and will be satisfied with it, especially given I had decided this is a cut-back week and I ran longer than my usual yesterday. Lots of focus on the legs in strength training today too, so I'll definitely feel that tomorrow.
Tomorrow is the start of school for kids here and it is supposed to be 90 degrees and humid. Not all schools have AC so I wouldn't be surprised about cancellations here either. Fortunately the forecast looks so much better after that. I have my eye on Saturday's forecast for the HM and it is looking great - dewpoints and temps back down in the 50s! Fingers crossed for that.3 -

Recommend your running watch...
I'm selling my Fitbit Alta HR because I just don't use it anymore. Since using Strava there is not really any point in using it for tracking (Strava is more accurate anyway). I easily get my 10k steps and have an app on my phone for the reminder to move (good when you spend a good chunk of your day sitting), and I honestly think I sleep better not knowing how much deep sleep I've had.
BUT it would be nice to have a GPS capable watch for long runs. Something I would probably only wear for running, so I don't have to have my phone on me. I have a Ipod shuffle for music (I think it still works, have to fire it up to test it out - I usually use my phone) so a watch would be great. Less to worry about on race day.
Recommendations please! and would you buy second hand? I'm not likely to be able to afford brand new anytime soon - given in NZ electronics tend to be 30% more expensive than the US.
Anyone know anythign about Timex Ironman GPS Watch? I can get a second hand one that's an unwanted gift for !150 ($98USD)0 -

- I prefer a GPS HR watch to record run and then an auto upload to Garmin/Strava vs using the Strava app on the phone, but I still carry a phone on the run for music/podcasts, etc.
- Re Second Hand purchase. I have had success buying used tech both online and locally. A year ago, I purchased locally a 1 year old Garmin Fenix 3 HR at a great price since the user wanted the newly released Fenix 5. In the States, Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp, etc are all effectively online/local exchanges and EBay does a decent job in giving buyers confidence with different options to help with a purchase and your satisfaction, etc...however, bottom line, when buying something used, research and buyer beware is always a good idea.
- Don't know much about Ironman watch, but if there are used watches out there, a quick google search, Amazon reviews, etc can let you know how others like/dislike and/or if there are support issues to be on the look for (i.e. can it upload to Strava, is their app good/bad, battery life, etc). If the watch has issues, buying used will just magnify the experience as negative that might be more related to the product vs purchasing it used.2 -

Garmin Forerunner 220 is probably a good option. Depending on the condition and price I think you could be very happy with it. It will have all the basics.

I brought my running stuff to work today in case I need to go to the Y after. About an hour or so before I was done with work soccer practice was cancelled due to weather/field conditions, but skies were sunny by me. I wasn’t really feeling the treadmill, but I knew it was pouring at home so took a chance and walked out to grab the clothes. There was one dark cloud when I got outside, but it looked like it was moving past. I started out and was maybe a half mile down the path when I saw the rain coming. It was a quick downpour and was over by the time I was done with the first mile or so. It was 80 degrees out so quickly turned very humid, but getting caught in the rain was fun (if the weather was cold it would be a different story).
