Over 60 still trying

I am still trying. I don’t have a lot to lose but even 10 pounds has a great effect on blood sugar levels. That is my main goal. I am 72 and pretty much over vanity but do want to feel comfortable in my clothing. I am a sugar addict I think. I need help getting that under control. And I have a bit of depression and that sometimes stops me from getting activity in. Love the idea of support10

Not quite 60 but, have found success here on MFP. I found there are no tricks ~ I bought a food scale and weigh everything i eat and I log it. And I found a gym that I love. I also have motivational quotes where I can see them every day. For me today it is, Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels. Feel free to add me6

I am 64 and have been a off again on again member for quite a few years. I am down a total of 58 pounds, 15 since I rejoined a few months ago. feel free to add me, we can all use all the support we can get.3

I'm 61. I've never been clinically overweight in the sense that I'm "normal" on the charts, but over the past 11 years my weight has crept up in part because of a sports injury and my environment (too much junk food around). I'm at the highest weight of my life and am considering seeing a nutritionist for accountability. It's embarrassing because I know what to do but the motivation of old is not there. As a small, short woman who is not physically active, the amount of calories to which I must limit myself makes me look anorexic. But I'm not.
It's hard because part of me wants to give up. But it's not in my interests to let it go. Being overweight (by my standards) affects my mood and if it continues, could affect my health. I can't fit into my work clothes. Being overweight tends to age people and in an ageist society, I cannot afford to look older.3 -
I'm in the same boat, as I've been battling weight most of my life. I turned 61 in October. I know that I need to get my act together, but I get so damned tired of it all. I have been dieting since I was 25....

@Kathryn41057 that was my story up until 4 years ago when I decided never to go on a diet ever again since for 40 years they never worked out but only yo yoed.3 -
I'm 62, and lost 42 pounds when my husband died two years ago. I regained nearly 20 pounds due to boredom and emotional eating, but the pounds are starting to come off again. I have a lot more to lose. It's not about how I look, or how thin I might get now. It's about keeping my mobility and saving my knees, since I have nobody to pick up the slack now if I can't do something.

It's not perfect, as I'm deferring surgery as long as I can, but I went from frequent pain (sometimes awakening me at night) and routine discomfort, to very occasional annoying discomfort, some trivial twinges more often, and true pain being ultra-rare (I have to really over-do to cause it). Last year, for the first time since the meniscus diagnosis, I was able to finish the Concept 2 Holiday Challenge (row 200,000 rowing machine meters between Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve) . . . and I was fine.
Also widowed myself, but an old hand at it now: It's been since I was 42 (will be 63 in about a week).

NEVER GIVE UP HOPE! Losing weight is like waling through a revolving door. A little step foward and a little back. Hopefully the back is just a little less. Whatever you do for yourself, it is a positive thing. Give yourself a pat on the back. Habits are hard to change, but knowing the process can help. Cue, Response, Reward. Keep going. AND know where you are wanting to land.5

Yes we can do it. I reached my enough is enough point in May of 2018. I have a calorie amount, but what I really have is a carb, fat and protein amount. I kind of fall into the lower carb group. Reason that is working for me is I am a type 2 diabetic. But it still comes down to Calories in, Calories out to lose weight. I have lost 71 pounds so far this year. I weigh everything, and log everything. This is a lifestyle change journey. I view as it never will have an end, it will have different phases in the journey but no true end. I can not go back to how I use to eat. After about two months, I really started walking as my form of exercise. So went from being out of breath at 500 ft, to now I walk 2.5 miles about 5 days per week at 3.5 to 4 mph. And am finally hitting 10,000 steps daily.
I am having blood drawn tomorrow 11/21/2018. Will see if my AC1 has gone farther down, in September had gone to 6.6 had been 11.8 in February of this year. I am hoping to see it right around 6%. Then next week I see my Diabetes specialist. I am hoping if all my blood numbers are good, to get off one additional diabetes medication. And maybe go off Insulin and back to a pill form. We will see. Not sure that will happen as I have been a type 2 diabetic for 18 years now. I am 60 years old.13 -
One day at a time. You can do this, add me as a friend if you want. Several are over 70 and have done great things.5

I'm 54 and in the same situation. I have dieted all of my life. I need to lose 30 pounds and hope to find support on here. This is a true struggle for me. I would love to connect with others to give and receive help.5

I'm 67 and had the same problem. yo yo dieting...my problem was that I was "dieting"...not changing my lifestyle. If you want to lose it and keep it off, you have to change the lifestyle. period. It won't happen without effort. But I still eat things I like. Just much smaller portions. I have traded chips for cucumbers...that kind of thing. Since I started feeling better I started exercising...taking it one step at a time. I started out in 2015 at 287 lbs, barely able to move. I am not at 175 (gained a couple of lbs when I started maintenance). I exercise every day..ride bikes, go to the gym....You have to have reachable goals and expectations...and it will take a long time. Nothing quick...but it is a lifestyle change....I am a completely new person.....I now give motivational talks to people in the VA weight loss program....
If I can do it, anyone can do it. Let me know if I can help.....11 -
I am 62, and as of today finally getting away from weight watchers and beginning here. I actually have been tracking here for about 3 weeks. I did well with Ww over the years, but really trying to learn how to eat, while getting over the good/ bad foods. This looks like a perfect place to meet some new motivating friends12

I'm 60 and have bipolar disorder. I was doing well until a major depressive episode hit as well as some health problems. All my hard work and good habits flew out the window. Now I'm entering that unhealthy stage so I need to do something. It seems like I've been on one diet or another my whole life, and I'm very resistant to tracking now. I'm not giving up, though.7

Hello everyone....I am 68 and started low carb eating and tracking on MFP on Oct. 28th. Have health issues with spine (recently started walking with a walker) so am trying to lose some weight to atleast continue to walk as there is no other recourse for me. Haven't been able to budge an ounce in the last 18 years so was thrilled that 8 lbs have come off. Mind you 5 of those lbs were from a case of the flu but they have stayed off so I am counting them. LOL I am trying for 1 lb per week or anything at this point but I am finding that writing down what I eat has greatly helped me and of course this site makes it easy by calculating the calories etc. for you. I also find the data base very helpful as it holds a lot of company brands ( Canadian brands as well as US) so you can enter exactly what you had and not guess by choosing generic versions of and hope the calorie sums are almost the same. The one thing that is really helping is portion control......when you enter the calorie and associated carbs fat etc. for a proper portion and then post how many portions you actually consumed it's like WOW so I find for the next day I do the portion and feel better that I can have that food plus another food and still keep under my goals for that day instead of pigging out on one and that's it and go hungry. It is getting easier to visualize the portion of different foods so that's good. So will see if I am successful as I need to lose atleast 60 lbs to start if I hope to be able to continue to walk.....but any loss would be welcomed after all these disappointing years. My only problem is that I am just not hungry in the morning as a cup of coffee is more than sufficient and I really have lunch/breakfast around 12 or 1 p.m. and then dinner around 5 p.m. and snacks later on. I have kept under 1500 calories per day and under 90 gms of carbs so does it really matter when you consume your calories??? Mary from Canada4

@mprocyszyn -welcome
It sounds like you’re off to a great start, many times getting started is the hardest part!
As far as meal timing, it doesn’t matter at all when you choose to eat. If you’re not hungry in the morning, then by all means feel free to save your calories for later on.
Best of luck, change happens over time so be patient. Trust the process.3 -
Hello, all you seasoned citizens. Hope you are well. The Christmas season is upon us. My goal is just to maintain for the next six weeks. Merry Christmas!

Good evening everyone! I have actually tracked all week, and am liking this better than what I was doing before...so far so good. I am looking for a daily accountability thread/ group, with people in the same age bracket. Is there anything that you guys know of ? It would be great having some more buddies to stay motivated with.1

You could try this one, maybe, if it suits your needs: https://community.myfitnesspal.com/en/discussion/10704529/women-ages-50-for-november-2018
November's almost over, but I assume they'll start a new one in December - that seems to be the usual routine.2 -

Hi everybody I need help desperately. I am 63 now, yo yo diets since I was in my 20s, it seems to get harder as the years go by to keep motivated is there anybody else out there like me. I need a good kick up the butt and perhaps a few friends.
Pretty much my life story too. Sending a friend request so we can encourage each other.2 -
You can all do this, no matter what the struggles don't give up. Yes it's hard when you get older but we must keep at it. It's better if you have supportive friends that are also on
Mfp. Good luck all3 -
I am in the same situation haven't been able to budge. As of this last Sat. Dec. 1st another lb. grand total 9 lbs. So excited. I swear the difference is I am writing everything down on this site that goes into my mouth......and I believe that is the difference. I am keeping to the low carbs...I've even posted foods I might have for example for lunch or dinner and if I see too much calories or carbs, I delete that food and think of something else. So hopefully this keeps up and as my friend tells me...it took you a long time to put this on and it will take you a long time to take it off but you are NOT DIETING you are eating and thinking of your food in a different way. You may want to look at "Just Give Me 10 Days - Round 61" It includes all ages and sizes, including a number of people over 65, and there's daily accountability. I started with Round 54, and I've dropped 20 lb. since the last week of September, which puts me about half way to my goal. Some members are losing and a few are maintaining, but it's a nice, supportive group. You can join a round at any time.2 -
Hello, everyone! Hope all y'all are well. Check in and let us know how you are doing.
Merry Christmas!3
