@seltzermint555 Welcome to our group of wonderfully supportive people. Sounds to me like this is the place for you to be if you & your hubby have committed to an AF 2019. It doesn't sound like either of you have a drinking issue though so wondering what prompted you to go AF. I think it's a great decision, just curious.4

@lagoscarrie Interesting how the nightly (or mostly nightly) drinking habit can kinda sneak up & grab you enough to make it hard to shake so good on you for gaining control. Welcome to our group!3

I don't really count days but it's been about 2 weeks since I had a drink. I am really starting to notice if I give in once, even if it's a few drinks on special occasion, I end up "needing" it to cope with stress.... which then makes my life more stressful cause I will act stupid when I'm drunk. I had an occasional drink on new years with my husband and I started wanting it everyday.
I'm tired of drugs and alcohol effecting my relationships. My whole family suffers from addiction.
YEP!!
Welcome1 -
@Ed_Zilla So happy for you that you have a good group of supportive friends AND I`m certain they appreciate having a DD!!
THANK YOU for ALL my WooHoos!! I've beat my ~woo~ record & I'm feeling kinda special right now LOL6 -

Absolutely! I had a number of really good reasons to say goodbye to wine, but lack of control over eating was on the list.5 -
On day 27 of no booze. Not planning on giving it up entirely but going for 100 days initially then a paradigm shift on where, when and why I drink8

I guess we can change the meaning of the woo button on this thread. That would baffle the monsters..lol
Positive people should take it positively and don't worry abt the rest..
Positivity is good for your health. That's something I have learnt from alcohol, that is.. is changes that to doom n gloom. For me anyhow.
Cheers
We should change the meaning of it! You guys are the best most positive people!seltzermint555 wrote: »I'm not sure I really belong on this thread, I apologize that I've only read about the first 10 pages and the most recent 10 pages so far. But my husband and I decided to do a dry year for 2019. Six weeks into it, no problem, but I have noticed that I am having a bit harder time than my husband. We weren't big drinkers before but would typically have something in the house and drink maybe 3 days of each month. But on trips we would always go to wineries and/or craft breweries and stuff like that, and I find myself already missing it. Today we were at a local convention and given an invite to a new microbrewery and I was inordinately bummed out for an hour thinking about it. It will be interesting to get past that. My husband (who drank with the same frequency as me) wasn't bothered at all!
Anyway...following for thoughts on this totally alcohol free year (and possibly more).
I also don't drink despite never having had an alcohol problem. It sounds like it might be more of a FOMO thing for you. In that situation what I would say is, "Wineries and breweries are not going to disappear anytime soon. I can always try new microbreweries later." Congratulations on the first month and change of the dry year!

Anyway went to my friends' double birthday party tonight. It was a great time. This guy asked me and a bunch of other people to do a shot, and I had FOMO for a minute, like "young people are supposed to do rounds of shots!" But then I remembered that shots are disgusting and I never did them even when I drank.
I still did the "cheers" and all with my seltzer (I brought four interesting flavors of seltzer to the party and people drank them all!) while they were all doing shots, and had a good time joking around with them. I feel like if I hang out with people who are drinking I get the same social "buzz" that they get but without the alcohol.
This guy who offered the shot was one of those people who pressures people to drink though. He pressured my friend who usually doesn't drink to take five shots and I was kind of side-eyeing about it because it seemed like my friend didn't really want to drink that much but didn't want to offend.
I'm happy I didn't drink especially because I went over my calories for today. The host of the party is a great cook and she made vegan chili, cheesy grits, collard greens, and vegan chocolate cake, and it was amazing.8 -
@seltzermint555 - I think you found the right place. Best wishes to your continued success!
@laurenq1991 - I had to "urban dictionary" FOMO - I assume it is - Fear of Missing Out. Correct?6 -
Good morning, friends! I am at my scrapbook weekend with friends and my sister. It has been a little sad for me, because of my personal relationship issue. However, I brought a bottle of wine with me. I drank it like a normal person throughout the weekend and didn’t have any drinks at the bar. They were expensive. $14 per cocktail.
Anyway, last evening, I knew the ladies were going to go for drinks and I kept thinking when are they going. It was like an obsession for me. It became late and I decided don’ t go for a drink and go to bed. They ended up going to the bar and I was cozy in my bed. No regrets.
One more thing, a friend of mine asked recently if she can come over and have a drink. She is going through a tough time. I said “Sorry, but I have a rule for myself I never drink at home. “ I think when I get my apartment this summer, I WONT have any alcohol in it. If I want a drink on occasion, I will need to go somewhere to get one. That will be a good inhibitor.11 -

Thank you for the warm welcome, all!
Honestly one of our favorite YouTubers (husband and wife from Finland) did a dry year in 2018 just for health and to see if it would be difficult for them. So we were inspired by them and thought we would try the same for 2019.
Yes, I do think it's partly FOMO that has me a little disturbed at times! And it's very true that the wineries & breweries will always be there. They have never been my top destination so I'm hoping the dry year (or more) will just reinforce that.

Do you miss the drinking or the social aspect? If it is the social aspect of wineries and breweries and you have self-control, you should still keep going. If you dont wanna attract attention, you can even order a beer or a wine and not drink it. Nobody will care. Obviously, it will require a lot of discipline.
So many of social events revolve around alcohol. But that is changing gradually, thanks to this thread. A day will come you will have to go out to the balcony to drink.4 -
Also, the heck's a FOMO? I know MOFO but never seen FOMO6

Yes it means fear of missing out. I thought it was more common terminology.

Happy Sunday all, well I chose to drink Thurs then into Friday cuz I just felt so crappy,it didn't help, couple of triggers which sshouldnt have been a big deal were on Wednesday my youngest daughter in Portland got rear ended really hard by a pickup truck, she's fine but her new car got totalled,my nerves were so shot all that night, the next day at work the old bartender from my old haunt came in for highlights and for some reason old memories just kept popping into my head so I struggled in my head all day and finally gave in to stopping for beer on the way home, ugh, all it did was make me lazy, tired and grouchy, completely not worth blowing my 61 day streak over! Dumb as always.Welcome to the newcomers, stick to your goals no matter what, the self defeat feeling is the worst of all, letting other people down sucks but letting ourselves down is just awful11

“But I soon learned that drinking never elevated anything. Mostly I ended up face down in my own misery. After I got sober, I found beauty everywhere. I noticed things that had never caught my attention before like the birds that visit my patio, the summer sky full of clouds and kind interactions between people. Seek out some beauty. Visit a museum. Go to a bookstore and leaf through some home design books. Drop by a botanical garden. Straighten out that print on your wall that has been off-kilter for months. Visit photography websites. Beauty is all around you, and it multiplies. Invite some beauty in to remind yourself what a gift this sober life is.” - Meredith Bell
@whitpauly Wishing you a wonderful Sunday and I understand when you have been on a great streak and alcohol gets in the way. Here is to a refresh!
@rubyred427 Smart lady planning ahead. Prayers to your friend. 🙏
@jonno_83 nice!6 -
@whitpauly Sending you hugs. Focus on the wonderful 61 day achievement. Don’t focus on two bad days. We are human. Sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves, but we need to remember this is a journey , ups and downs are normal. Here’s to day 1 and maybe this time, don’t even count the days. Just take one day and make it a good one.
@Jonno_83 Congrats. You are doing well!
@Fitness327wk I love the whole quote. “Beauty is all around you, and it multiplies.” This is lovely.6 -

Haha!,.. true. I can see that happening eventually. Just like health foods. There's a provision now for people who choose the better thing for them. e.g. Lactose free milk at McDonald's etc
So yeah,.. smoking booths and drinking booths. I guess the drinking one will have taxi bays beside them..5 -
I’m 9 years AF here. After a while you loose your taste for it. It makes me sick now just the thought of it.11

Made it through the get together at the brewery without having a drink!!! Oh my gosh it was tempting though!!!! So many new beers on tap! 😭😭 damn that deliciousness!! I feel though, if I can make it through that, i'm on a pretty good path. So, i'm pretty proud of myself for that.12

Thanks! I really think I just miss it as an "activity" option, if that makes sense. Usually when I went to those places it was just with my husband anyway, and not anyone else. We were typically focused on tasting and left pretty shortly. I travel some for work but alcohol is rarely part of the equation with those trips, either. So not a problem.
Fortunately, our social lives aren't too centered on alcohol at all. When I get together with girlfriends for example, there are several of us who don't drink if we have an early morning anyway, and a couple who have medical issues that prohibit them from drinking. I think it's gonna be pretty easy, but I'm just a little bit surprised that it's crossed my mind as much as it has!6
