Heather - I told my decorations down today too. Except the inevitable one that always escapes my eye when I’m putting away. This year it is snowflake lights over my Kitchen curtains.
I followed an idea that Penny shared last year and left some lights in vases and such to try to brighten the gloom of winter.
Janet- I’m so sorry to read all of the struggles your family is experiencing. I hope your daughter gets the help she needs soon.
I was in bed by 1030 last night and if there were fireworks in the area I didn’t hear them. Hubby has decided to try the Mediterranean diet. I have to learn a new way of cooking and figure out how To make something for myself at the same time. I am such a fussy eater I won’t like a lot of it.
I really am happy he is paying attention but wish he would just count the calories and eat what I make.
Off to clean our bedroom I ended up throwing some things in there while cleaning the rest of the house today.

That is an impressive list. My 20 for 2020 has a lot of items that can be completed in one afternoon, nothing that has to be done daily or weekly, and nothing with a deadline other than the end of the year. Good luck to you.
My word for 2020 is "flexible" pertaining to both my attitude and behaviours and my body.

margaretturk wrote: »bananasandoranges wrote: »@auntiebk awesome about cleaning and filing. I started with wordy flylady site. She says 15 min per day and changes rooms every week. I had a country house 13 years ago, where I spent all school vacations, that was hard to keep up with. The 15 minute timer sessions helped me loads. If I do it now, it's 15 minutes minium and then 4x 15 minutes in different rooms when I have more time, courage and energy. I then found out that researches often do 4x 25-30 minute timer sessions. I was on a researcher forum once and they were all talking about their timer sessions. They are sometimes called pomidoros after Italian name for tomatos, after old tomato-shaped timers!
Yesterday I did 4x15 in bath, bedroom, living, kitchen and it definitely helps make a dent.
I have major paperwork disaster. anyone have any tips?
It wasn't great before- comes and goes- but when I had those work issues in 2015-2017 I drowned in the papers involved in keeping documentation and never totally got my head out. I have boxes and piles and areas of papers spread out on the floor, and covering many surfaces.
For paperwork:
First do you have a system of how you want to organize them and files to match how you want them. Colored files work great because it can make it easier to find what you need. Can some of what you have be scanned and saved to a thumb drive?
Once you have your plan figure out a part of your day to sort your papers and file them to the system you decided works for you. I would have a shredder and bag to recycle handy to get rid of what you can. Shred anything that has your name and address and any sensitvie info.
Since our file cabinet is in our basement I do my fiing when I do the laundry. We have an old maytag and I like to be there when it goes through it cylces plus I like to add vinegar during the last rinse, so the time it takes to do a load is just about the right amount of time to do my paperwork. I also try to take that time to clean out a couple of old files and shred sensitive paperwork if needed.
I don't have as much paperwork as I used to because of computers.
Margaret
I agree!
I more or less have a system, although it will need to be refined. Small collections can go in the filing cabinet. Larger collections go into binders. Stuff I don't want goes into a pile to be tossed/shredded.
However, in order for me to make some headway with it, I would need to spend several hours on a weekend or consecutive evenings working on it. It's not a 10 minutes here, 15 minutes there thing at this point.
Once I finish my Master's my next goal is to get my paperwork filed and dealt with ... and as much of it scanned as possible! I've decided to take the pressure off myself until then.bananasandoranges wrote: »@margaretturk thank you I do have a system. I have 2 3 drawer filing cabinets. 4 drawers are full and 2 are eating to be. I am just so behind in it. Scanning seems like it would take longer as I'd have to scan everything and have several backups. I've had external hard disks and flash drives go bad many many times. It seems very unsecure to put data on the cloud. maybe I need a faster scanner. I've got thousands of pages so the idea of scanning and filing them all seems enormous. I'm not on top of digital filing either but I usually find stuff by entering it's name or recalling the approximate date...
I've found a service that will do it all for me for something like $400, which seems quite reasonable. However, I do have to have it organised by size. All the A4 stuff I want scanned together, all the A3 stuff I want scanned together, all the A5 stuff I want scanned together etc. If I put dividers in, I think they'll even scan to different folders.
Also, I think our Officeworks will do it too ... is there a large office supply store near you?
Our family has decided much the same thing.
We might get little things for each other if we happen to see something that reminds us of a person or that we know they'd love. And these days it tends to be cards more than gifts because of the mailing factor and fact that we all have more than enough "stuff". I have an album that I put cards in.
And I sent my parents an Amazon gift card at Christmas because I know there are things they'll get ... music, books ... and that's so much easier than them sending me a list of what they've got so I don't get duplicates.
But I think the only way we'd buy household items is if we knew the person needed something and couldn't afford it ... and we wouldn't wait till Christmas.

Following my word UNLEASH I have made a start this evening on setting up a website. I realised I have no means by which somebody can get in touch with me if they like my books and want to contact me about talks, publicity etc. I am floundering a bit as I have never done it before, but I will get there in the end. I can put a link to it on my Amazon Author page and in my next book. It's not live yet as I don't really know what I'm doing! Hate technology. Grrrrrr!

Although I had coded my first website in HTML from scratch, when I decided to use Wordpress, what really helped me was to join a Wordpress group that meets every other week. It's casual, so I don't have to go if I'm busy with something else, but it's really helpful to go and get ideas and help from real people.Workoutahloic50 wrote: »I keep Christmas up til epiphany

So do I!All your comments about decluttering really motivated me. I had been procrastinating clearing out the master bath cabinets and DH's side of the closet. I also wanted to get a couple drawers of my guest room cleaned out in advance of the arrival of boxes my brother will be getting from his ex-GF. DONE! I have a couple things to take to the garage and other items to donate to Goodwill. Two big black trash bags were purged.
Stay well and happy.

Our bathroom is definitely on my list for when I've finished my Master's. I know there is a lot of stuff in there which is just simply old. Part of me has wanted to keep it ... just in case ... but I'm at the point now where I'd like to get rid of it.

Lazy day today although I did a little cleaning up in the barn and garden shed. I am teaching water exercise tomorrow. the regular teacher is in Texas for her DGS's wedding. My word for 2020 is "pause". I need to take a moment before making decisions on what to eat or do to think if it is the right thing for me. I am looking forward to getting back into a routine.
Karen - Glad Olivia is doing better. love that smile.
Pip - Are you moving to CA to be closer to family? How will moving from a state with no state income tax to one with state income tax affect your retirement income? We were glad to not have that complication when we moved to WA. Glad Yogi is doing well being an only.
Janetr - Wow is all I can say. It seems when it rains it pours. Sending you blessings to see you through.

Happy New Year to all.. Thank you to so many for all the kind words of support as my sister and I work through the legal steps to solidify the settlement agreement we think we worked out with family members in the first half of Dec. And more importantly for the caring and support for the medical situation of my sisters brain tumors. The kind words shared have helped much this month and wish I could express how much the kindness has meant.
My sister and I have been partners for many years... she is my sister and best friend. She never has liked the suction dredging because she gets so cold when diving. She has done her gold extraction out of the water, in more traditional mining ways, the last few years. :-) and I continue suction dredging.
Hopefully my sister will have her diagnostic tests at the end of this month. The steroids and the anti seizure medicine should have reduced the edema around the tumors.... enough to possibly get tissue samples for pathology. It will be good to get a diagnosis and know options. It's hard not knowing. So far she is tolerating the medicine well and although there are some times of numbness on her left side and bouts of trembling, there haven't been any seizures since early December.
Wishing everyone a healthy new year... What a wonderful supportive group.... Barbie.. thanks for the new link for January.

Had a lazy New Year's Day. Went out and got my Christmas present from my husband. That may sound silly, but since he has died I have gotten myself something for my birthday and Christmas and say it is from him. I usually get something I want that I would not typically buy for myself, and it can't be anything I need. Last few birthdays I have bought rings. Christmas gift this year is a red Columbia parka. I really like the style and it was on sale at a decent price.
Got laundry completed and cooked pork and sauerkraut for dinner. Was good to be back to my normal eating.
My calorie goal for maintenance is around 1650. I am typically a bit under that since I am not certain this is my actual maintenance weight.
Will be bak to work tomorrow, leave early for a hair cut and then to the gym (which I have missed).
If I have a word for the year, I think it is finish--specifically to finish house projects so the house is in decent shape by the end of the year. Plan on retiring in 2021 and don't know if I want to sell and move to Arizona to be close to grand kids or not. If I have the place ready, I will have clearer options. Really just need to replace interior doors and do some updates to basement bathroom. Also remove old basement ceiling (partly water damaged due to my husband breaking a 90 gallon aquarium). I have funds set aside to get doors done and much of basement I can do myself. Just a matter of getting my butt in gear and finishing.
So sorry for those of you having difficulties in your life right now. It is difficult watching those close to us struggling.
Still feeling a bit jet lag--off to bed and back to work tomorrow.

Ginny - I think that is lovely that you get something from your husband
In previous years, if I had the cookie dish full, I'd invariably nibble. This year next to the candy dish I have a dish of nuts (cashews and pistachios). Even tho I may still nibble, I've found that I will go for the nuts. At least they have SOME nutritional value.
Ken & Lynette came over tonight. They gave Jess money. Glad I got gift certificates from her for them. Lynette said something about how she didn't know how much was on the gift card she got me for the same restaurant (she likes Ruby Tuesday) so I asked her to hold onto the ones she was going to give me and we'd all go out. We decided we'd go on Sat. so that Jess can be with us. I already know that I'll have the salmon.
Well, Sunday is the last of the holiday parties that I need to give. Really, the only reason I'm doing this is because Denise was going to be here that weekend so I invited people, bought food, etc. Now she's not coming and I really don't feel like doing it, but I will because Jess is here to help and because other people have already committed.
Ken & Lynette just left (they have to work tomorrow) and Jess went to WalMart to get "female things". Seems the "things" I have aren't her brand. Well, in that way she isn't like me. I'd use someone else's so that would save me money. But oh well..

yes, to be closer to family, , Kirby doesn't worry about it. we are both from states that had state tax, he is from Indiana and I'm from California. he's not worried about it. e has factored that in our retirement.3 -
I think I lost an earlier post.
I leave our outside decorations until end of Januay to brighten the long winter here. Inside I will start in about a week. I am inviting friends over this week to share my deocorations. It is too hectic in December for me and them. After I have my friends over I will start to take them down. I finish up on Martin Luther King weekend.
My words for 2020 are to simplify and to be kind.

DH took down my tree on NYE day while I was gone. I was sad…I like to wait until the 2nd. I hadn’t gotten a picture, so no memories of Christmas at the house. Oh well, the best memories are in pictures with our sweet grand baby!! 😊
As part of my “transformation” plan, I am working on setting new habits to be more productive in 2020 and focus on what really matters in my life! I am excited and planning to set the SMART goals as Machka said…I was familiar with this from work, but it is always good to have a reminder!
KJ I love your post it note idea…I also get that overwhelmed feeling with the lists and think I will adopt your idea for myself. Not having the entire list in front of you sounds very freeing!
Ginny So sorry your GS is ill! Hope he is doing better. Many people here in NC have the flu and other bad illnesses that are lasting for weeks. Sorry it is so cold in Phoenix! A shame about the double ear infection! So many kids have been having this trouble! – so glad GS is doing better and you arrived home safely! I like the word finish! As you finish your last full year of work…good timing.
Lisa Your situation with the snake is a tough one. We had a 5-foot snake as a pet and I adored it, but I knew it wasn’t dangerous and we raised it from the size of a pencil, so it was extremely tame. I can’t imagine how you can avoid the practical jokes as it sounds like you have already let them know you are not comfortable with it. I’m with you…they can be incredibly cruel, and it is sad that your daughter’s husband doesn’t understand how wrong it is. Since you let them know you did not want the dogs at your home and they brought them anyway, it’s clear they are not concerned with your needs. Very sad!
Thank you for the list of good news!! Wish we heard it more often! So often people talk as if things are worse all the time. I guess I look for the good – I still believe there is more good than bad in the world.
Shirley Glad you had success getting through the parties and family gatherings! Terrific that you only gained one pound!!
Lanette I love the Diet and Health post! So true!
Carol Your GD looks adorable in the dress! What a cutie! That was a terrific buy!
Pam Welcome! What part of MI? I’m from Ann Arbor. My brother still lives in Whitmore Lake.
Machka I’m excited for you and how your physical health will improve when you have your breathing improved. I imagine it will make a great difference in your endurance!
CheriYour menorah is even more beautiful on the last night with all of the candles! So peaceful and lovely.
Barbara I hope you are feeling better!! Congrats on the cleaning. Those timed cleanings are one of the things I’m adding to my schedule this year. I find I usually continue past the timer when I set times to clean. Very rewarding!
Mary What a great success story! Very inspiring!!
Tracey Glad to see you back! Sorry you have had such a rough time! Glad your husband is starting to take his health seriously. Try to take it easy on yourself about the weight gain. You will get it back off when you are back on track! You’ve got this!!
Terri Congratulations on exceeding your goal!!
Viv Hope you feel better quickly!!
Allie My sister went to Machu Picchu recently and loved it. I agree with the others. If you have the money, I would do it. Sounds like a fun trip! – So glad you decided to go! I think you will really enjoy it! So sorry to hear your brother will have to have 2 more surgeries!
Annie So sorry to hear you fainted and had to go through the cost and stress of the ER! Hope you are taking good care of yourself. Dehydration can cause your blood pressure to drop which can cause you to pass out. Makes sense that it could be why you did.
Amber Awful to see what happened in your church! There are a lot of crazy people out there…add alcohol and drugs and they get even crazier.
Congratulations on the size 10 pants!! You have done so well!!
Debby Just read you are having your birthday today! (Youngster!!) Hope you have had a wonderful day! Don’t be discouraged! It is a new year with new opportunities to reach whatever goals you have set for yourself!
Yvonne Those Christmas lights were gorgeous! I wonder how many lights they had to use!
Tina Glad you had a good trip!
Meg Good to see you back! Sounds like you have had your hands full! Your experience going through your friend’s house is why I want to do the “Swedish Death Clean” now…I don’t want my children to have to do all that work after I’m gone.
Barbara I like the three bullet point method for DH! I see him leaving the conversation after the first couple of sentences. Interesting how so many men are so similar!
Lynette Thank you for the IF info. I have seriously considered this, but I am afraid I won’t be able to handle the hours without food. I’ve seen people say it helped with their diabetes, but my BG is up after fasting.
Debby Hate that Hubby is being fowl at you on your birthday!! It’s a shame he is taking out his stress on you!
Heather Great family photo! And Edie coming out of the ice cream line
Pip Great that you have better work conditions for now and that you have started your retirement countdown!
Beth Sounds like you have a great plan for 2020! I like “steadfast”
Janet So sorry for all you are going through! So many emotional things at one time! Can’t imagine the stress you must be under! Prayers continue for you and your daughter!
Rita I like your 20 for 2020 and journey is a great word!
Katla Great resolutions for the new year!
Debby I love your tree and presents! Very festive!
DrKatie I love praise for your 2020 word! I am focusing more on being grateful for all we have as well!
Barbie Flexible is a great word, also! Everyone is choosing so well!
Betsy So glad your sister is tolerating the medicines well and is not having seizures. I hate that you must wait so long for answers. I remember having to wait to see the doctor after diagnosis and just wanting to know what I needed to gear up for.
Margaret Great words!
Hope everyone had a wonderful New Year's Day! Luci in WNC

Today I will do my exercises and then make a start on the next episode of my memoir which is all about my deeply religious phase in my early teens. I need to get my 'Memory Box' out of the cupboard to check on dates, such as my Confirmation. We were Church of England.
In the afternoon I will do some bonus exercise, probably rowing, and then try to understand how to get my website sorted. There is a video I can watch. It will be very basic. I need it for a contact point, but I've got to put something on it!
I also hope to get the tree down. DH needs to help with that.
I'm feeling good about my word UNLEASH.
Allie - Have you taken out holiday insurance? You need to have it in place now in case you have to cancel for health reasons.
We have to pay the balance for our cruise by 12th January. I am going to have to go into deep savings. You can't take it with you. Starting the new decade and wondering where the last one went has confirmed that feeling. I will be 80 in ten years time. Maybe not gadding about quite so much?

Distance: 50.90km
Elevation: 334m
Moving Time: 2:49:36
Elapsed Time: 3:07:26

This is the first 50 km bicycle ride we have done since before my husband's accident! It was a bit of a challenge because of 28 km/h to 40 km/h wind. My legs weren't happy on the way out!
A vegetation fire started up about when we left and the road we used on the way back was closed for a bit. But when we got back to that point, they'd got it under control and had opened the road. Those things move fast!
