A guy at my husband’s work is convinced this will disappear after the election. people actually think a WORLDWIDE pandemic is all because of OUR national election. I had heard about that theory circulating, but this is the first IRL example we have had.
Isn't it bizarre? To think all the governments, media, health organizations, epidemiologists, researchers, labs, doctors, hospital administrators, nurses, and morgues in the world are actively participating in this monumental hoax, absorbing the economic and psychological damage, all for one country's next election.
Virginia cases had plateaued for quite awhile but have started creeping back up again. Two nursing facilities had outbreaks. Supposedly as Northern VA has started to see decreased activity, increases are happening along the coast like in Virginia Beach, I'm sure due to vacation season opening up. Much like for the nation, where the numbers looked better than they were for awhile because the activity in NY decreasing offset the outbreaks starting in the south, the previous Virginia hotspots settling down had been offsetting the beach communities starting to see more cases.
All I know is I will continue to be a hermit as much as possible for the foreseeable future. My heart goes out to those who don't have a choice, I hope there are enough if us staying home to alleviate the environments where essential workers are required.10 -

I agree 100%! I want facts, let me interpret them and add my own emotions... I don’t want numbers spun to make me feel what you want me to feel.

I think the COVERAGE (at least here in the USA) of the pandemic will change after the election. No matter which side you lean to (and not to get into politics specifically) it's a fact that the coverage of the pandemic is being politicized and used as a weapon against the "other" side. I imagine depending on the outcome of the election the coverage will change depending on who "wins" but it's naïve to think that politics aren't playing a HUGE factor into the types of coverage we are getting /shrug. At least, as I said, in the USA.10 -
Our case numbers in Washington state continue to rise at a rate of 500-700 per day, and of course that is only the people who have symptoms and get tested but not the large number of untested carriers on any given day.
Population = 10 million
Number of tests completed = 708,000
Positive = 41,757
Rate of positives = 5.9% (same as it's been all along)
Percent of Deaths per positive cases = 3.4% (also about the same)
New Hospitalizations around 40 or fewer per day
Deaths averaging 4-6 per day
The hospitalizations and deaths are down to lower levels than in early days. There are a lot of reasons why this is so and of course it could rocket up at any time, but that is our reality here today.
I took this from the dashboard with lots of info from our DOH in Washington state:
https://www.doh.wa.gov/Emergencies/NovelCoronavirusOutbreak2020COVID19/DataDashboard
Probably no one here cares much about our little corner, but it's a hopeful sign to me.12 -

I heard that a couple weeks ago at work. Sounds like a lot of people here follow that logic. They don't take precautions either because they don't even believe. This is why cases in my state are increasing so fast.6 -

I care. My dd lives in Seattle. Thank you for sharing that info!!1 -
Suffice to say, cases in the US are still rising. This after initial thoughts were that it would slow down in the warmer, summer months (hasn’t happened, and doesn’t appear to be a factor). Who knows what the fall/winter months may bring. We do know social distancing and masks did slow the spread. It’s a real shame that this turned into a political issue. People’s health is of paramount importance. We all really have a stake in this, it should be uniting people throughout the world, not dividing us.11

It does sound bizarre and the thought all will be fine come 4 Nov 2020 comes from the inability to reason. If this is all being faked then perhaps they think the deceased COVID-19 patients are going to just reappear? Pro science I understand. Pro anti-science I understand but the lack of being rational boggles my mind.7 -

https://wwjnewsradio.radio.com/articles/news/man-fatally-shot-after-stabbing-in-fight-over-wearing-a-mask
The local Walmart (KY/USA) has an employee standing under a tent with two huge fans blowing from behind him which moves the air from those going into the store away from the employee. When I came out there was no one nearby so I asked him what was his instructions were over masks.
He said they were permitted to suggest wearing a mask per the governor's order but in no way were they to confront a customer with a demand to wear a mask to enter, shop and check out. KY does not want the expense to have police to walk along with the shoppers to physically force people to wear masks naturally plus not all shoppers are even required to wear a mask. The employee said he did not have the knowledge of who were exempt from the order so WM put in place the above mask enforcement policy to help prevent him from physical harm or even death. He and I agreed if people had breathing issues that exempted them from the mask order that it would be best if possible to have someone come shop on their behalf or let other staff pick the items and bring them out to the pick up location.

No, that's interesting.
My dad's county (Cowlitz) reported a jump in cases post 7/4, which is not great, but still are listing no deaths, so that's kind of amazing (it's reasonably rural). He seems to be behaving responsibly, for which I credit his wife.
Illinois (pop 12.65 m) has had 2,041,440 tests, 155,506 positives, and 7,218 deaths. The overall positive rate is 7.6%, but in recent weeks it's been about 2.6% (it was up at 25% during the worst of it). Apparently nearly 20% of Chicago's pop has been tested (although of course one can catch it soon thereafter, as you have noted). Recent uptick in cases among 20-somethings is a bit worrisome (especially as we are opening up in a variety of ways). Today about 700 new cases and 25 deaths (which is way better than our numbers at one point).
This, on the other hand, is encouraging, although I'm not getting my hopes up yet: https://www.chicagotribune.com/coronavirus/ct-nw-covid-19-vaccine-tests-20200714-zxn4u4q2tbfepczu5salzwerei-story.html4 -

That's ridiculous. A store should have the right to have whatever policies they want for people entering. Seems like either a cop-out by WM or an overreach by the state. And no, you don't need to have police "walk along with the shoppers" to have the store (esp one with security, as I would imagine WM has) enforce their own rules about who can enter and check out.8 -

Remember what happened to the store security guard who tried to enforce a mask rule back in May? Nobody unarmed, making $15/hr is going to put up much of an argument with someone who doesn't want to wear a mask. Based on history it unfortunately doesn't end well.

We just had another incident here.
43-year-old guy went into a convenience store without a mask, got into an argument with 77-year-old customer who was masked. Argument went into the parking lot, where the younger guy stabbed the older one. (Hospitalized, stable condition.)
Deputies found the younger guy, who came at one of them with the knife and got himself shot, dead.
https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2020/07/14/michigan-mask-confrontation-man-shot-killed-police-after-stabbing/5436217002/ (Some of what I wrote about it comes from other sources than this article.)
On another Covid front: Michigan's mask mandate has an exception for those who can't wear a mask for medical reasons, predictably leading mask-rebel people to lie about it, and stores/police departments to try to figure out a policy. Some of the stores, police departments, and general public are claiming that stores can't ask about medical conditions because of HIPAA, which, since stores are not "covered entities" under HIPAA, is not true. (I've also seen photos of signs at one store claiming they can't ask because of the 4th amendment. Huh? Stores are not bound by that, either.)
There's been discussion of whether ADA requires stores to allow people in the store without a mask if they medically can't wear one. I'm doubtful, and have seen at least one interpretation that health provisions can override ADA in a case like this, but I don't have the knowledge to evaluate that.
In the abstract, I support the medical exception**, but it makes the compliance picture more complicated, for sure, and gives thoughless, careless, maskless people an out to exploit.
(** As I've mentioned before, I'm involved with a virtual group for aging solo people, without familial support. Yes, people can do curbside or delivery for lots of things, but certain kinds of essential errands unavoidably happen in person, such as medical devices/equipment requiring fitting. Caring people who have no other option - truly can't wear a mask - will be looking for ways to minimize risk to themselves and others, I'm sure.)
There are many things in this pandemic situation that are making life even more difficult for certain people who already have life difficulties (not just people who can't wear masks, but underpaid/underprotected "essntial workers", homeless people, children in poverty with food-access and other issues . . . and lots more). The non-mask-wearers, especially but not exclusively those who falsely claim medical conditions, are making things even worse for some of those challenged people (and bad for everyone, of course).14 -

Big box stores are enforcing it here, no issues. The state telling a chain not to enforce it is either false (the store making excuses) or complete state overreach, as I said.3 -

Just because they don't have a guy in a uniform with patches who looks like a store cop, doesn't mean they don't have employees whose responsibilities include security. If someone tries walking out with a TV, betcha they get confronted, even before the local constabulary arrives.
Can't speak for lemur, but I shop at Walmart. I don't think doing so is a measure of whether someone is "removed from reality" or not, though.3 -

Locally one should expect 25 to 100+ armed customers at any given time. Store capacity is currently limited to 1000 shoppers as I understand it. Most people are looking out for the business and other customers. Most that I saw yesterday with out masks were not USA citizens which can be a language barrier. Things tend to work out as long as there's no show of force. The MI case was sad.2 -

I live in IL and any enforcement is very random. I went to a Wal-Mart in my community, was walking in the attendant said good morning, thanks for wearing a mask. Guy behind me didn't have one, was asked if he did, said crap forgot it in the car and turned around, and I assume he came back with it.
Went to a Wal-Mart in a town about 30 miles away same day. Person standing at the door but people were walking in without masks and not a word from the door person. About 40% of the crowd in this store had masks. Interestingly many of the non-mask wearers looked like they would be immune compromised. Of course one could say they had a medical reason for no wearing a mask, but virtually all of them were in groups of 2 or more.
Send one in to pick up the stuff.6 -

I never shop at WM. We don't have any near where I am, and I had a bad reaction when I shopped there when traveling as they were checking packages at the door when leaving -- treating customers like criminals. But in that they already were doing that, it seems them -- even more than places like WF and HD, which IME are doing great jobs at enforcing the number of people in the store and masks -- should be able to enforce store policies. If they don't, I think that's a choice. The stores I go to do enforce those things.2
