Ran/walked a 10K on treadmill due to humidity and thunderstorms. This brings my total mileage thus far to 21.3 miles out of 50.
Everyone have a great night!5 -

I can be out the door in 15 mins. That's what I do for the pre-work 3 mile runs. 3 miles is the limit for what I can do fasted so anything longer than that I need about an hour for a little food and a cup of coffee.5 -
We had a busy day so no running but I have a few pictures. We visited Arashiyama, went for a rickshaw ride, ate some delicious lunch (which I totally forgot to take a picture of), and did a little shopping.
Yesterday afternoon I wandered down some streets around our hotel and found this beautiful shrine.8 -
Morning all.
Got in 7.56M at 09"23.
Mopey about yesterday's loss.
@quilteryoyo haha! Game kicked off at 8pm - so he was okay (and finished by 10). It was the boxing title fight that was a midnight start where he KO-ed (pun intended) before it even started.
@martaindale lovely pics!
@Laurz9191 nice run! Hope you have fun with your folks in town!3 -
No running today but I did meet 4 friends at 5:00 am and we rucked for 4.26 miles.
@quilteryoyo - I ran on the Mendota Trail on Saturday, rode on the Guest River Gorge trail on Sunday and ran on the Sugar Hill Loop and Riverside trails at Clinch River State Park after the bike ride.
Love the photos @martaindale! Keep 'em coming!3 -
Great pics of Tokyo and the family @martaindale.
Saturday night we went to see Jerry Seinfeld at Winstar Casino just north of the Texas border. He was hilarious. Mostly talked about things that are annoying as he gets older, which I can certainly relate.
First time I've been to Winstar (or any casino for that matter). As much as people love them, I really don't get it. There is sooo much extravagance, excess, and overindulgence. As much as people are complaining about the economy and then going there and seeing all the money that is being thrown away almost turns my stomach. OK, sorry for the editorial. I'll climb down from my soap box now.
Got in 7.1 miles this morning. There was a tiny breeze, but it was still so so hot.

Nice treadmill run @steviebee888 .
@martaindale Looks like a great day! Love the family picture.
I hope the run helped improve your mood @tarun_yadavA . I'm glad the game was over early so that no one slept through it.
Great exercise @Teresa502 . I love that you have so many trails nearby. I wish I had some that were closer to me.
Glad you enjoyed the show @Scott6255 . I will admit I liked going to Vegas when I lived in California. (Yes, I know that Vegas is not in CA. LOL But I was close enough to drive over a few times.) I liked the food, shows, and enjoyed playing blackjack. At least with that I felt like I had a little bit of control of my fate, as opposed to the slots.4 -

total 38.70km
Not so good. I guess running three days after another is not so good.7 -
Hi everyone!
I had to take someone to the train station early this morning, so I got off on my run the earliest I ever have in my life - 6:40 . It took me 40 minutes from when I got up to get started including a bite to eat and coffee. I wouldn’t say it was awesome to go out so early, but it wasn't that bad either- I even socialised with another runner and we were the same speed so we ran together for about 2km, so I am going to try to find my inner motivation to get up and out early tomorrow so I can squeeze my long run in.
I did a quick finish run which went well and ran 14km. 148.1/200km for July.
@martaindale Nice pictures! It looks and sounds like you are having a very nice time!
@Scott6255 I don’t understand the pull of casinos either. The show sounds like it was fun though!

@yirara Maybe a rest day is in order. It's good that you got it done though, and looks like the pace was pretty consistent with your other runs this month.
@Laurz9191 Nice early morning run! It's great that you were able to run with someone else for a while.2 -

Later, I did a treadmill wun. I walked 5 min, (ran/walked 2/2 min at 4.2/3.8 mph) x 7, walked 5 min. Just getting some miles in without pushing it at all.

I ran 4 miles this morning. It was pretty warm at 79°F. It was dark when I started and light when I finished. It was an easy run since I did my long run yesterday. But I did see a skunk so I did get my pace down to 9.55 for just a bit.
Great pictures @martaindale !
@Scott6255 I probably would have liked to see Jerry Seinfeld, but I don't know if I would like the casino that much. I'm not much of a gambler. I did look on our anniversary weekend and the concert is Mötley Crüe. I liked them well enough in high school, but I 'm not that interested in seeing them now.

Neighborhood 1.33 Mile (at 13"31 pace). 76 day streak.
Cruised through the neighborhood. I still get taken aback at running down hill...it's steep.
@kgirlhart Yes, @martaindale has great pics, what would be also great is pics of you from back in the day heading out with your pals to the Motley Crue show. Where are those pics? (Fancy umlats)

Morning all
Got in 4.44M at 09"55.
Speaking of Vegas and Casinos... love Vegas but not a big gambler either. At all, actually. Think I've played roulette maybe twice.
-House always wins.
-No probability greater than 50% in your favour. Ever.
-Roulette, literally red or black, odd or even, with no skill or face-reading or card-counting or Rainman or whatever, has a probability of 47.3%
Yeah... NO. Dont have time effort or energy for those Poker Bros.7 -

Hi from Japan! Today we rode the bullet train from Kyoto to Hiroshima then took a ferry to Miyajima where we toured a beautiful shrine and temple.Miyajima has deer that are waaaaay too tame but are very cute. We had lunch there before heading back to Hiroshima to visit the Peace park and the museum. For dinner we had okonomiyaki, which is a crazy sounding dish that tastes delicious! It's a layered dish cooked on a huge flattop grill. It has a crepe, a layer of cabbage and bean sprouts, noodles, an egg, (pork if you eat that), covered with a sauce and sprinkled with seaweed powder. Even my very picky kid loved it. After dinner we took the bullet train back to Kyoto. In fact I'm on the train right now. It's been a very long day but it was a lot of fun mixed with some historical education and plenty of good food.6
-
Nice running @kgirlhart . Did you speed up to put distance between you and the skunk? You see a lot of those, don't you.
Great job on your streak @chris_in_cal .
Another nice run @tarun_yadavA .
Nice run @Teresa502 . It was humid this morning. I sure hope we get some of that rain they are calling for the rest of the week.
@martaindale Looks like you and the family are having a great time in Japan! Such a cute family picture. That deer looks a bit overweight. I wonder if people feed them, even though I'm sure there are rules against such things.

I got out early for a driveway wun. I walked 0.35 miles before running any. I ran more that I thought I would when I headed out, so broke it up into warm up walk, run (actually run/walk), cool down walk. The run/walk portion was at a 14:15 min/mile pace, so barely what I would call a run vs walk. I ran fasted today and just don't think I do very well with that. Overall, my avg HR was 115 with a max of 140 bpm.
Heading out in a few minutes to take mom to the dentist, meet my cousin from IL that is passing through (the truck driver) and aunt for lunch, and shopping for a couple pair of shorts and snacks for my trip. I probably won't exercise again until I get to the hotel in SC tomorrow evening.6 -

You have some beautiful pic. I'm so happy for you and your fam.5 -
@martaindale you guys are making the most out of your trip. Pics look awesome. Maybe you can share your experience with the powers that be for the Houston-Dallas bullet train they have been talking about for many years now.
@quilteryoyo have a safe trip to SC!
I had an epic fail of a run this morning. Out of the blue both of my calves and shins had stabbing pains. I tried to walk it off after the 1st mile, but after the 2nd I just gave up. Shoes have less than 100 miles. I dunno.
7 -
@Scott6255 Sorry to hear about your run! I hope your legs feel better the next time you go out. That sounds awful!
I did wake up and drag myself out of bed and out the door this morning for my long run. I felt sleepy and slow and wanted to bail on the run for the first hour, but kept going and eventually had more energy. I still cut my run a few kms shorter than planned but I had finished my randomly chosen and loosely in my head calculated loop and I didn’t feel like adding any more extensions today. I was just proud I got a long run done. I ran 22.2km.
Tomorrow I will try to get up early again, this time for some 400 and 200 repeats. Hopefully my legs will be a bit more awake .
170.4km/200 for July. I’m off to France Friday afternoon, and have 3 more days of running. It looks like I could meet my monthly goal before the trip and just chill on the beach. However I don’t think that would be so good for my marathon training .6 -
I’ve managed to squeeze in a couple of runs this week amid the school holiday chaos that is my house.
However, Monday was a rest day and very wet and I was getting cabin fever (four kids in the house all day will do that to a woman) so I did an hour’s yoga. I haven’t done that much intense yoga for a while and as a result, on Tuesday when I tried running, my legs were very achy, but it was a stunning day for running - one of those misty mornings that burns off to brilliant sunshine, cool and clear. I was in a very scenic spot by the harbour so it was just fabulous.
I did another 45 minutes of yoga yesterday afternoon and didn’t sleep well because of aching hip muscles. Consequently, I was expecting today’s run to be very painful but once I actually started, it was fine. I did 6km in a drizzly and bleak winter’s day - quite the contrast to yesterday. For for those of you who want rain, let me know. I’ll post you some - our forecast for the rest of the week looks very soggy.
Glad you’re loving the food in Japan @martaindale. That dish looks amazing.
I hope your calf muscles and shins recover quickly @scott6255, I’d get out the foam roller if I were you. Because it’s both legs, rather than one, it indicates fatigue rather than an injury.
Nice work @Laurz9191 - Good to see you getting it done. Being awake during a long run is optional.
Which reminds me (if we can leap back to the discussion about running early in the morning), when I used to run at dawn and people asked me how I managed it, I would say I got out of bed, got dressed, started running, and worried about waking up later on.
On the subject of Vegas, I’ve only been to the states maybe five times and three of those trips were to Vegas for trade shows. I’m not a gambler either. I found the whole casino scene really really dull (and a bit grim). I did win a lot (and I mean often, not vast quantities of money, sadly) playing blackjack, but even while I was winning I was bored - clearly missing the necessary gambling gene.
The worst was on my last day when I was trying to get rid of a handful of coins so I dropped them into a dime slot machine. I promptly won something like $150. The machine was taking forever to pay out (lots of jangling and bells and excitement on behalf of the machine itself) and while I impatiently waited, I was getting that evilest looks from a woman sitting next to me who told me that she had been feeding that machine for the past three hours!
If you’re going to get addicted to something, running is a much better option.5 -
@martaindale you guys are making the most out of your trip. Pics look awesome. Maybe you can share your experience with the powers that be for the Houston-Dallas bullet train they have been talking about for many years now.
😄 I swear I have been hearing about that train forever! It would be great if it ever happened. The drive from Houston to Dallas is just terrible.
@chris_in_cal It was very cool! We rode a bullet train in Italy that had a speedometer on the screen in the train car. I wish this one had something like that because I would love to know how fast we were going. The guides told us the train gets to the 280-300 km/h range.quilteryoyo wrote: »@martaindale That deer looks a bit overweight. They tell you not to feed them but I'm sure they get fed plenty. They are also pretty aggressive about food. If they hear rustling they will walk up and just start nibbling at bags. One of the people in our group saw a deer grab a lady's coffee when she sat it down to get something out of her bag. Just grabbed it and tilted it's head back to drink the coffee. It's a little freaky to me when wildlife are that tame.4 -
July total: 42.6/100 miles
YTD: 532.4/1200 miles
7/1: 3 miles
7/3: 6.5 miles
7/4: 7.5 miles
7/5: 3.1 miles
7/6: 8 miles
7/8: 5.2 miles
7/14: 6.1 miles
7/17: 3.2 miles
I got a short run in before our day started. I used a route I found on Strava that looped up a mountain foothill along a trail, through a shrine, and then back down into the city. It was a part of Kyoto I hadn't seen yet and such a wild juxtaposition between the modern city then boom, residential area then boom, totally quiet trail where I didn't see a single person then back to city in just 3 miles. I feel like American cities tend to sprawl whereas here the city feels more compartmentalized. The Japanese also value nature and having these forests and gardens tucked into the city makes for an interesting experience.
The trail was quite steep and slippery because of all the rain the last few days. I was in road shoes so I hiked several sections. Just didn't feel confident running. But at least 2 miles were on paved roads or paths so still a lot of time for actual running.6 -
@Scott6255 I hope your legs feel better for the next run. It's weird how that popped up out of nowhere. I second a foam roller. That thing is like magic for me!
@ContraryMaryMary I also lack the gambling gene. I've been to Vegas a few times, mostly for conferences. I tend to make reservations at amazing restaurants and go to shows. In all of my visits I think I played a slot machine like 20 mins total.
I am signed up for RnR LV next year. It is such an iconic race so it felt like a natural choice for my Nevada state race.6 -
Thanks @Scott6255 . SC is just a stop over on my was to FL. I'll be in FL Thurs - Monday. That's odd about your shins. I would think shoes, but they should last way longer than 100 miles. I hope they feel better.
Way to hang in there and get your long run done @Laurz9191 . Have fun in France.
Beautiful spot for your run yesterday @ContraryMaryMary . Great running, esp. with sore muscles. Hahaha about running in your sleep. I agree that running addiction is much better than gambling. I started to say it's a lot cheaper, but.... People can get really "possessive" of slot machines, I've heard. Hey, if you walk away and it wins on the next coin, there's no one to blame but yourself. We need some of that rain, but are also forecast to have rain every day the rest of the week. We actually got 30 min of solid rain this morning and everyone was so excited! It's been way too long.
@martaindale I agree that wildlife shouldn't be "tame." They are still wild and aggressiveness for food can cause someone to get hurt and then the animal put down, when it is the people who feed them that are at fault. I would have liked to have seen the deer drink coffee though. Was it hot and did it seem to like it? That sounds like, and looks like, a really nice place to run. That will be such a fun race in Vegas.

I felt a little burnt out and slow, but it was about the same pace as yesterday.

Morning everyone!
Got in 6.24M at 09"46
@Scott6255 oh no; sorry that run ended badly!
@quilteryoyo thank you! 😊 ... And looks like you had a fun time with the family!
@martaindale ooohhh that crepe-noodle-egg-pork thing looks dee-lish!
@chris_in_cal what the latest on that LA to Vegas fast train?
And if you Americans are feeling bad about High Speed rail. We're equally sh---y!
Google HS2. Was meant to be a London-Birmingham-Manchester fast train...
Over budget, won't be delivered till 2030s.
Only it doesn't connect to Euro train that goes to Paris or Brussels. They've now canned Birmingham to Manchester. So this ridiculously overpriced London-Birmingham line that shaves off like, 20 minutes that literally no one in London wants or needs!
Crossrail (now Elizabeth line) was a 70mile stretch of Underground that goes from West to East. Took years and massively over budget.
Finally delivered on Boris Johnson's watch - which of course he milked and took credit for!
@ContraryMaryMary that slot machine story is hilarious! 😂
Side note- Vegas question for you ladies.
IF you dragged your husband to Celine Dion at Caesar's ... Isn't it fair that the next time you go Vegas, it's only like-for-like fair that you go a Boxing fight??.
(A friend!! Not me!!! I did not see Celine Dion live. 😳 )7 -

82.37/130 miles completed for July
When I came on here to update today's run, I saw yesterday's update sitting out here as a draft. I guess I never posted it. So yesterday, I ran 6 hot miles.. It was 83°F at 5:50 in the morning morning. I don't really have much else to say about it. It wasn't a horrible run, but it is tough when it is still that hot and the sun hasn't even come up yet. I know it would be a lot harder if I ran in the afternoon or evening, but is still tough when it is that warm.
Today, I debated about taking my rest day. It was 83°F again and might be cooler tomorrow, but there also might be rain tomorrow morning. So I went ahead and ran the same 6 miles I ran yesterday. The first mile or so, I was thinking I should have just taken my rest day. But once I got going it wasn't too bad.
@chris_in_cal I am glad that there was no internet when I was a teenager.
@tarun_yadavA I'm not the best person to ask about that. I would rather see a boxing match than Celine Dion.
@ContraryMaryMary and @martaindale Love the pictures! New Zealand and Japan are both places I would really love to see.
