    Last summer, our neighbor's son had a tick on him after playing outside all day. The mom went to get tweezers to get the tick off and when she came back, her son said it was gone....he had flicked it off (it obviously wasn't fully attached to his skin yet)!!!! I would FREAK if there was a tick just chillin' somewhere in my house. Ticks are disgusting! :(


    Not sure if anyone seen this bug I posted about a few pages ago but my sister has these bugs called Weevils that resemble ticks in her backyard. The scary thing is they look like a tick when they land on you but they fly unlike ticks.

    And to answer the question before it gets asked: In Islam, it's prescribed in the Quran and hadith that women who have their periods are excused from fasting, most likely due to weakness and blood loss (I also think it's so we can eat during the day, since we tend to crave like crazy and be super-hungry... ;)); we're also excused from our five daily prayers during our periods. You aren't supposed to make up the prayers (most likely because you'd have like 35 prayers to pray if your period lasted five days!), but you do have to make up the fasts at another time, because it's obligatory to complete the full thirty days of fasting. :)

    You know, I've learned more from you about Islam in the last few months than I have from anyone else anywhere for the last 45 years. LOL

    I have the Flex & love that it counts my steps & does motivate me if I find I haven't moved a lot during my workdays (on my days off I can be pretty lazy). I also love that you can set your goal & it shows how many calories my TDEE is for the day & it displays how many I could eat if I wanted to net my goal. I usually eat around 1700-1800 & then on my days off I plan on eating around 2100-2200.

    Now if the Jawbone 3 is more accurate I might spring for that one once it hits the stores.

    I do! I don't remember what name it has, but I know it costs one hundred U.S. dollars and counts your steps as well as altitude (as in, gives you more calories for climbing stairs!). It also gives your TDEE and such, according to the specs I read.

    As an update to how I've done so far this week: Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday were all at maintenance. I struggled, but I pushed really hard to stay at maintenance so I at least wouldn't gain more. As of Wednesday morning, I weighed 70.8 kg.

    Thursday, Friday, and Saturday were all awesome (calorie-wise, that is) and I kept my deficit (400 calorie deficit) perfectly, and even had ice cream! (It's already Sunday here, almost 2 A.M.) When I weighed in this morning, I was 69.3. :smiley:
    Is it the clip Fitbit? It's called the One and that's the one I have right now. I like it plenty though I do want to "upgrade" and get a ChargeHR to celebrate when I can run again.

    Yes, I think it might be that one. :) I'll need to go and check, but I'm pretty sure that was it.
    I have the One and really like it. I think it's very accurate too, except when I go out when it's really windy - in which case it adds loads of stairs! Apparently it's to do with air pressure.

    I have the One too. I started with the Flex but I developed a rash from it...in fact, a lot of people did. So many that Fitbit actually offered an exchange for a different model or a full refund to anyone who experienced a rash. I didn't want to abandon it altogether so I opted for the exchange for the One. No rash...I'm happy! :)

    I also have the One. Love it.

    Your feelings are valid. What you are going through is real and it is difficult for you. We understand and I am sure we have all been there at some point. You ARE allowed to feel this way and you ARE allowed to vent.

    Coastal (responding to the first post since I never saw it) I feel the same. I pretty much feel like I'm drowning. I'm expected to be the rock for everyone, and most of the time I stoically am. But times like right now, I just want to scream and cry and throw a fit. I want someone to comfort ME and no one is. I'm supposed to hold it together and do 1,000 different things well every day, without fail or exception.

    I joke with people a lot that it sucks to be me, because I don't get a "down day", but it's true. I'm expected to be on point 24/7 and I'm struggling. I get the "count your blessings" and "it could be worse" a LOT. Yes, it could be. In the scheme of things, what bothers me could be construed as petty. It doesn't mean it hurts less or I'm less upset. I am grateful for what I have, but aren't I also allowed to be upset too?!

    Warning- the below will make me sound like an ungrateful brat. I know this, but they are MY feelings. I'm working on processing them, but it takes time.

    I found out on Saturday that good friends of ours (who have 2 boys about the same age as us) are wanting a 3rd. They want to try for a girl. They previously said they were done but the DH changed his mind. I went upstairs and cried. I have wanted 3 kids since I was little. DH said no, 2 was all he could take. He got a vasectomy last Nov so there will only be 2. I agreed because I don't believe in forcing someone to have more kids if they don't want to. I'm not the only one involved in the decision. DH also swore we could look into adopting, which helped ease my feelings about the V.

    I have regretted it EVERY DAY since. When I see parents out with 3 or more kids, I'm envious. If one or more is a girl, I am so jealous. I want a daughter. I always have. I love my boys so much, but there is a part of me that will always hurt because I wanted a girl. Both times, the u/s tech told me they were girls and I was blissful for a few weeks until told they were boys. They will never know. I will NEVER tell them they aren't "enough" for me, because they are. I am grateful they are both here and healthy and I would NOT trade them for anything, but I feel a twinge every time I look at a girl or girl baby. DH has also now decided he doesn't want to adopt, so I feel a bit of a pang of "bait and switch" sometimes when I think about it. Mostly I want 3 kids, but not gonna lie, a girl would be awesome.

    I feel so alone, because DH is d-o-n-e. 2 is enough for him, he doesn't remotely want a 3rd. Talking to him about it doesn't help, because he has a hard time sympathizing with me. Ok, so he joked around and said I could get a dog to "mother". I agreed. Now last night he is reneging and saying "well, we can get a dog when we get x, y, and z done around the house". This will literally be YEARS. He knows this. Bait and switch #2.

    He also said I could look into getting a new car within the month. So I've been plotting out savings, trade-in value, etc. This past weekend he decided nope, my Jeep runs fine for now and maybe we'll think about it in 6 months. Bait and switch #3.

    I'm frustrated, I'm sad, I feel like everything I want always comes last after everyone else, and yes I know this is all first world problems, but right now it's rough. On top of it, I'm dieting strictly, so I think I'm just in a funk and crabby from that too. It's the one thing I feel like I'm succeeding at, though, so I don't want to give it up. I have 10.5 lb to go. I'm SO close. I just want to accomplish Something, ya know?

He said no tomato, which pretty much rules out everything. I keep thinking oh well I'll do this and substitute the carbs and then you realise it has a tomato based sauce. It's slowly looking more and more impossible.

    Any meat, fish, salad, vegetables, fruit (but limited) I'm going to have to read up about it. The problem with England is when you go to the doctors, you only get a 10 minute consultation time. (If you're lucky, I know some which are just 5 minutes) so he only had time to explain why I should do it and the science behind it (most of which I can't remember) so when it came to what I can actually eat, I'm not sure. That and I have a stinking cold so I just want to go back to bed right now rather than tackling a whole new eating habit.

    If it helps you any, I can offer some suggestions. I have to eat like this due to some of my health problems. In order to keep my weight lower and my sugar in check, I have to follow a keto/very low carb diet. I usually end up < 15 g/day. I do dairy, though, because I need the calcium and most people do, unless you're supplementing. You may also want to check with your doc, but cutting carbs that low requires a magnesium, potassium, and electrolyte supplement (when carbs aren't present in regular amounts in the blood, you can leach those minerals and lose them at an excessive rate). I take magnesium and potassium and drink chicken broth every now and again for the sodium.

    It does suck at first. You get the "carb flu" and spend the first couple weeks miserable. Once your body adjusts, it does get a lot easier (I made brownies for DH and my son this weekend and wasn't even tempted in the slightest to eat one) and it feels awesome to have more stable blood sugar.

    Oh my god you are now my bestest friend in the whole world. The more I think about what I can't eat, the more confused I get. Right now I feel like all I can eat is lettuce and cucumber. Mum just went food shopping and came back and said how even melon has carbs. Wtf? Can you suggest any reading material so I can get my head around this, I want to understand it instead of blindly following instructions.

    And that makes me happy! :smiley: The more people learn about what Islam is REALLY about, the less ignorance and hate there will be everywhere. An awesome example is the lady here (sorry, can't remember which one of you it was!) who used my explanations to tell her mother more about Islam--my dawah spreads! :)

    @coastalpath I’m really sorry you are struggling. If you can, try and carve a few minutes out of each day to look after yourself, whether its some deep breathing/meditation, exercise, a solitary cup of coffee. It is also important that you acknowledge your stress and feelings, don’t squash them away because others think you should. Everything you think and feel is valid to you.

    I’m going to check out the fitbit thread in a moment. I’m having a bit of a sucky morning at work.

    Totally randomly, as I drove back from Devon last night, I planned what I might have for my wedding reception. Partly inspired by this thread and partly by a comedienne that was on radio 4 (don’t judge) yesterday. Bear in mind my relationship structure means I will never get married, but still, I planned it…

    So I’d have an afternoon tea, catered by my favourite Torquay café, with made to order sandwiches (guests choose from a small list of fillings); bread is home made white or granary. A variety of home made scones, with cherry, or ginger, or white choc chips in. Lots of different fruit jams. And huge bowls of clotted cream. There may also be cinnamon toast. And lots of different cakes, like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, chocolate brownie. All served with either tea, coffee (from starbucks) or something sparkling, probably Prosecco or Asti (I’m actually a cherry lambrini kind of girl). Set to a background of string quartet music.

    And for evening meal I’d have a Chinese buffet, in the style of the Mongolian barbecue restaurant chain (do they have those in the states?) basically, you take your bowl, choose your meat/veg/noodles/cooking sauce, and they cook it on a flat top stove while you wait.

    It will be held in a marquee, on the cliff tops, near where I live (in Devon).

    I spent nearly 200 miles planning this. I have no idea what I’d be wearing, nor what the ceremony would be like.

    Who cares about the ceremony, can I come to your imagined wedding reception for the food? Be a love and make it halal meat, will you? :p

    Done and of course you are invited! the guests will essentially be our families and you guys lolol

    I forgot to mention it's mountain -5 days now!!

    I'm allergic to tomatoes (and strawberries, raspberries and red peppers) so being tomato free is possible, but requires thought, those suckers are in everything!

    You can book a double appointment with your GP (or anyone in the surgery) so you get longer. Also, most practice nurses are better equipped to deal with nutrition advice.

    Haha not sure if anyone has answered this...if you are not from/in UK it probably sounds strange. It's soft scoop whipped ice cream in a cone with a chocolate flake. Also known as a 99 from when they used to cost 99 pence (sterling). They are served from an ice cream van. Reminds me of childhood!

    Clotted cream isn't much like whipped cream at all. It's made by slowly heating full-cream milk and letting the fat rise to the surface. The clotted cream forms a kind of crust and the whole top layer gets spooned off. That all sounds pretty vile but it's really the most amazingly delicious thing.

    Sounds yummy to me! So is it used mostly on ice creams?
    Not really, although that does sound delicious. More on scones with jam (this, plus a pot of tea is a 'cream tea' and is a thing of beauty), or on something like warm apple pie or a plum crumble (a crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a butter/flour/brown sugar topping - a bit like a 'crisp' but without oats in the topping). Yum. Can you tell I'm hungry?!

    Yum that all sounds so good. I'll take an order of the plum crumble but maybe with apples instead & extra, extra, extra crumble:D.

    You could lose 9.5 pounds in about 2 months easy!

    Well, I'm hoping to lose it early--my deficit is for 400 grams lost per week, so I can lose 1.6 kilos (around 4 pounds) per month, theoretically. However, since I've been struggling, I have extra time to account for times that I'm over goal. For example, 3 days this week had no deficit at all, but at least I kept to maintenance!

    That's why he specifically made the goal 65 kilos, so it wouldn't be a huge struggle to get there, considering my current weight and state of motivation--my low weight is actually around 61 kilos, but there's no way I can do THAT by my birthday. :)

    I'm off to weigh in now! I hope it'll be a good one.

    I think it's great you stuck to maintenance since it will help you when you hit your actual maintenance weight & sometimes we just need to take breaks from counting calories, macros, & the dieting mindset.

    For the past week I was eating around 1500-1700; however, last night I ate around 2,000 with some exercise calories to buffer since my body gets really hangry around my period.

    Thank you! I'm trying super hard to commit myself to this. I wouldn't call it needing a break, since the last two or three months have just been one big break... Maintenance was a step down from the 2500+ calories that I had probably been eating before re-committing this week. And I've been able to stick to my deficit so far since then, so BIG YAY! :)

    I am the designated spider killer in the house. My husband would absolutely leave the room and tell me to go and get it. He's on dispatch duty for everything else (mosquitos, mice, snakes, etc.) but I am the spider person.

    I cried a lot this afternoon....a LOT

    I am not gonna lie, grief bacon for the win! Perhaps during the week when I can just ignore the phone it won't be so bad....

    Things have relaxed for now in intensity, but no resolution.......

    My fitbit is charging now and seemed to be counting once I charged it a bit, so fingers crossed that it is ok.....weird that it did not warn me with an email before dying, but just gonna hope its a fluke at this point....

    Did anyone see the second part of my left at the bar story? Someone (sorry, can't remember who), asked if I was there for a long time, so I told the rest of what happened, but it got trapped at the bottom of a page and it took me a bit to find it, so I am wondering if anyone actually saw it or not......

    P.S. - then I have a DEAD spider, which is not much better.....what do you suggest I do with that??

    I saw the second part and I would have super mad at my friend as well. Girls are supposed to look out for each other

    That's the agreement I have with ALL spiders that come into the house. They can live in the house, but they have to survive the vacuum cleaner. If they survive the vacuum cleaner, then they have to LIVE in the vacuum cleaner for the rest of their days or be revacuumed.

    LOL! Sounds like a very fair agreement.

    @coastalpath I’m really sorry you are struggling. If you can, try and carve a few minutes out of each day to look after yourself, whether its some deep breathing/meditation, exercise, a solitary cup of coffee. It is also important that you acknowledge your stress and feelings, don’t squash them away because others think you should. Everything you think and feel is valid to you.

    I’m going to check out the fitbit thread in a moment. I’m having a bit of a sucky morning at work.

    Totally randomly, as I drove back from Devon last night, I planned what I might have for my wedding reception. Partly inspired by this thread and partly by a comedienne that was on radio 4 (don’t judge) yesterday. Bear in mind my relationship structure means I will never get married, but still, I planned it…

    So I’d have an afternoon tea, catered by my favourite Torquay café, with made to order sandwiches (guests choose from a small list of fillings); bread is home made white or granary. A variety of home made scones, with cherry, or ginger, or white choc chips in. Lots of different fruit jams. And huge bowls of clotted cream. There may also be cinnamon toast. And lots of different cakes, like Victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, chocolate brownie. All served with either tea, coffee (from starbucks) or something sparkling, probably Prosecco or Asti (I’m actually a cherry lambrini kind of girl). Set to a background of string quartet music.

    And for evening meal I’d have a Chinese buffet, in the style of the Mongolian barbecue restaurant chain (do they have those in the states?) basically, you take your bowl, choose your meat/veg/noodles/cooking sauce, and they cook it on a flat top stove while you wait.

    It will be held in a marquee, on the cliff tops, near where I live (in Devon).

    I spent nearly 200 miles planning this. I have no idea what I’d be wearing, nor what the ceremony would be like.

    Who cares about the ceremony, can I come to your imagined wedding reception for the food? Be a love and make it halal meat, will you? :p

    Done and of course you are invited! the guests will essentially be our families and you guys lolol

    I forgot to mention it's mountain -5 days now!!

It's slowly looking more and more impossible.

    Yikes. :( I couldn't possibly live without tomatoes! So what CAN you eat? :o

    I'm allergic to tomatoes (and strawberries, raspberries and red peppers) so being tomato free is possible, but requires thought, those suckers are in everything!

    Any meat, fish, salad, vegetables, fruit (but limited) I'm going to have to read up about it. The problem with England is when you go to the doctors, you only get a 10 minute consultation time. (If you're lucky, I know some which are just 5 minutes) so he only had time to explain why I should do it and the science behind it (most of which I can't remember) so when it came to what I can actually eat, I'm not sure. That and I have a stinking cold so I just want to go back to bed right now rather than tackling a whole new eating habit.

    You can book a double appointment with your GP (or anyone in the surgery) so you get longer. Also, most practice nurses are better equipped to deal with nutrition advice.

    Oh are they? I was considering asking for a nurse at first because I always feel like I'm wasting a doctors time crying because I'm fat and I can't get rid of it. I just keep thinking they have more important things to diagnose than explaining to someone how to lose weight.

    Clotted cream isn't much like whipped cream at all. It's made by slowly heating full-cream milk and letting the fat rise to the surface.     Not really, although that does sound delicious. More on scones with jam (this, plus a pot of tea is a 'cream tea' and is a thing of beauty), or on something like warm apple pie or a plum crumble (a crumble is a baked fruit dessert with a butter/flour/brown sugar topping - a bit like a 'crisp' but without oats in the topping). Yum. Can you tell I'm hungry?!

    Walk 10K
    Run 1 hour
    Work in dissertation (I will use the plane trip to read some articles I have lined up for my literature review)
    No alcohol (this will also be challenging as I am going out with some of my team for 'drinks' as I am in Dallas and we don't see each other much.

    So...on 3 hours sleep off I go. I'll probably check in at airport, etc. Have a great day all.

    I totally took you up on it! My results stink, though:
    - One hour of exercise done (vs 30 minutes minimum)
    - No laundry done
    - Calorie goal perfectly maintained, but hardly any water was drunk.
    - No sticky notes were written

    Better than nothing, I guess? :)

    Editing to add: Today's goals will be...
    - 30 minutes minimum of exercise (again)
    - Housework (Please, self, for the love of God, clean this house...)
    - Write those sticky notes to post around the house
    - Weigh in "officially", since it's Monday!
    - Try to forget that I have neighbors and climb the stairs from the ground floor to my apartment at least once (4 storeys, so 3 flights of stairs)
    - Stick to my calorie goal
    - Drink at least 2 liters of water (Around eight cups)

    The name clotted cream doesn't sound icky to me, it sounds like something so luxuriously thick that a dollop of it is like a big clot of awesomeness. That's what it sounds like to me, anyway. ;)
