Last week was a horrible exercise week for me. I only managed to get in one short run and a couple of walks. I did have an epiphany over the weekend while reading the posts on this thread. I tend to be an all or nothing kind or person. If I don't have time for that particular days planned run, I just don't do anything. My epiphany was that anything is better than nothing. Obvious, I know. But it didn't sink in until I was reading where several of you said things like, "I didn't have time for my planned 10 mile run, so I went out and did 2 miles instead." So, thank you all!
I am trying to get in 50 miles total of running and walking this month to raise money for Relay For Life. That is in serious jeopardy as my month to date totals are only 10.52 miles running and 7.45 miles walking - 17.97 miles total. Time to just get out there and do what I can!!13 -
6 miles this morning. Used the directions app again, and found where I can get to some stats during the run, but since it was dark I couldn't see them (didn't feel like using the light button), but nice to know they are there. So ran blind again, but it was nice. Ended up almost exactly the same pace as Saturday without looking at watch, so I guess right at 9 min/mi is my natural pace. New Glycerin 16 were really comfortable. Didn't feel any niggles anywhere, except when I stopped. The 4th toe on my left foot really started to hurt. I thought "Oh no..these shoes are not as great as I thought". Bummed, thinking of when I can return them, I stretched and went in the house. Taking shoes and socks off, showed my toe was purple from the nail back to the first knuckle. Then I remembered I slammed my toe into the cedar chest at the end of the bed during the night last night . Heard some crunching . It hurt like hell, and I can't believe I forgot about it this morning. It didn't hurt at all until AFTER my run. Really weird.

April goal: 85 miles
4/2: 5.07 miles
4/3: 4.63 miles
4/4: 5.05 miles
4/7: 8.41 miles
4/9: 5.04 miles
4/10 5.00 miles
4/11: 5.03 miles
4/14: 9.02 miles
4/16: 5.04 miles
52.29/85 miles completed
I had a nice 5.04 mile run this morning. I was a little worried that it wouldn't be good. I could hear the wind blowing when I got up, and I hate wind. But once I got going it was good. The first couple of blocks into the south wind weren't fun, but luckily most of my run was east to west or west to east. The temperature was ~63F so it felt kind of like summer, but I was wearing shorts and a tank top so I was good. The sky was growing lighter and lighter as I headed home and I was running east and there were just enough clouds to be a pretty purple/red/orange color as the sun was coming up.

One would think that I'd have a lot of energy after a rest day. I didn't. Was a tweener day as far as temperature, so I dressed warm and embraced the sweat. Took me 3k before I felt loosened up, despite doing my regular stretching routine before running. Oh, well. Running old is better than not running at all.

It was a cold morning here, just above freezing when I left the house around 5am. My plan called for 4 miles, but after about one and a half I considered cutting it short. The dogs were all over the place, my left hip was irritated and it just felt hard. Over the next mile, I realized my hands free belt has a buckle that was directly on my hip. I adjusted that and instantly felt better. Though Kira was really set on running faster, and Jackson really was not, they were more focused. Just before turning the corner to head toward home, cutting the run short, I glanced left... and ran down this road for a few minutes before turning around and going home.
I ran 4 miles this morning. It was difficult, but that view made all the difference in the world.12 -
I've found something I dislike more than the treadmill...stationary bike. Horrid, horrid contraption. Limited workout, hard to get comfortable, and now my *kitten* hurts.
Friday I spent 30 minutes on elliptical, 60 minutes on a stationary bike.
Sunday it was 30 minutes elliptical, 90 minutes stationary bike.
Both times my Achilles hurt slightly the next day but resolved by the 2nd day.
The snow should be melted enough that I can get my son's real bike out and do some riding.
I'm finding it easy not to run. In fact I'm quite hesitant to run. As long as I don't run, I won't have a set back. Odd logic, but it's what keeps me from testing it out. My doc said I could start running again Friday but I think I'm going to wait until Saturday, and only do a 3 mile run, then a 5 mile on Sunday if all goes well. I'm really tempted to not run at all until race day (April 27th) and see what happens. I want to walk the first mile to let it warm up and slowly stretch out but then begins a huge 1700 foot climb over 2.5 miles which will really test my Achilles.
This afternoon I'm going out to buy new trail shoes with a higher drop than I'm used to. You know that saying, nothing new on race day? I suppose shoes might be the worst thing to try new on race day but that's likely what I'll do. I'll also be using trekking poles for only the second time. I wanted to be practicing with those these last two weekends. Now it looks like I wont' be using them until the race.
Our travel plans are all set. We fly out to Portland a week from tomorrow and come home the following Monday. I'm looking forward to hanging out with my sister and her family, and drinking wonderful beer and pinot noir from Oregon.

@Elise4270 and @shanaber the bit about my doctor telling me not to go barefoot was only in the context of recovery from Achilles strain. The idea is to keep the achilles from stretching as much by reducing how much my forefoot comes up on each step (I think @rheddmobile called it deloading, which is a good term for it). This I completely agree with and it's the same idea with recommending going with a higher drop shoe until recovered. Once recovered, barefoot is best, I think. @shanaber, have a great trip!
@lporter229 fantastic race, very well done!
@simcon1 congrats on your first trail run, and your #3 AG!! Very cool!
@scott6255 ouch!! Sounds painful
@MegaMooseEsq I mailed my returns out yesterday morning and completed my daughter's returns (Federal and 3 states!) last night. I'm such a procrastinator when it comes to taxes. Not being help to run helped me get it done though.
@juliet3455 I've been having many dog encounters lately but nothing like a dog bite. My technique, honed from years as a paper boy, is to turn towards the approaching dog, put my arms up and growl like I'm the attacker. I'm sure I'm due, but so far I've never been bit and usually if the dog continues my way, it at least is cautious and approaches slowly. Show no fear is my motto. I'm more concerned about a dog attacking Kody than I am attacking me, but that's never happened either.
@rheddmobile that is a sweet half zip! And a cool medal! Mmmmm....Memphis barbecue! Have you ever been to A & R Barbecue on Elvis Presley Rd? My son & I ate there three years ago. We really enjoyed it. That sounds like a crazy race day with that weather. Congrats to you and your husband! I love your comment, " It was strangely beautiful - one of the blessings of being a runner is being out when sane people stay indoors."

Squeezed a very short run in at lunch today after participating in an office Autism Awareness Walk. Still not feeling super optimistic about the new shoes *grumble grumble*

Ouch! We call that a midnight fracture, can you guess why! Sounds like you broke it, Make sure you buddy strap it for a couple off weeks! You could get medical attention if you really want to (take pics of your xrays if your willing, im an xray junkie hahaha) but the treatment is usually buddy strap.
Yay for good shoes2 -
Morning all. Went out for a short quick run. Did about 2.4k before I couldn't be bothered going further. Decided to walk a bit as well since I was out. Planning on doing 15k tomorrow so wasn't too stressed about distance this morning. That gives me 78km for the month so far. I'm going to do a few long runs over Easter weekend totalling about 35k so am almost all the way to 150 total.
Mum arrives today, so a nice short day at work (yay) then 5 days off work! I love long weekends10 -
Hit by a nasty stomach bug so no running today except to the toilet! Training for the half Marathon was nowhere near where it should have been so in many ways a day out will make no difference but not good. Son had his cross fit pt today and I normally sneak in a short workout then but all I could manage was sitting on a box!6

I am absolutely prone to all or nothing thinking, too. I have to remind myself not to let the perfect be the enemy of the good. That's the thinking that has kept me from trying a lot of new things over the years, especially physical activity. I finally made my goals so tiny that I couldn't talk myself out of skipping them and built from there. Still, it's a constant struggle!2 -

Unsurprisingly, I only had time for a short warm-up run before strength training today after I pushed snooze a couple of times. At least it was something. Circuit training group was not the greatest today. A bit of a failure on the monkey bars and overall I felt pretty low energy. Maybe a bit of a post-travel, post-stress slump. Ah well, every day is not going to be a personal best.7 -
My goal this month was to keep up with the thread and I have failed miserably.

Had a 5K this past Saturday. I have run this race 5 years in a row (same course) and this year was my worst performance despite great running conditions. I came in 11/161 in my age group. I have come in 2nd twice, 1st once, and 5th place once. I just didn't want to put in a greater effort while I was running. I had the same thoughts and feelings my last race. I felt ashamed after the race, not about my performance but for my lack of effort during the race itself because I definitely could have done better if I tried. I didn't want to reach the point of when it starts to get uncomfortable which is what races, specifically shorter ones are all about. My only moment of pride comes from a very strong uphill finish- the course is in my neighborhood so I practice my pace runs on it and know when I can give it my all.9 -

There was some new snow in the mountains this past weekend, so we thought we’d eke out another snowboarding day, which was lots of fun. My board is 20 years old and one of the bindings finally failed, so I needed to revisit my gear and ended up taking advantage of some end of the season sales and got a new board and bindings.
I got to ride my shiny new board with one downside, which was that I didn’t attach the stomp pad on the board (it takes 24 hours to cure, hard to do on the fly), so it was *darn* slippery coming off the lifts... which led to one rather spectacular spill (finally running-related content to come...) So, yesterday and today my knee is bruised and banged up, and I was very sore for the run! And also couldn’t tell if I may have pulled a hamstring. Luckily, so far I’m feeling better post-run than I was before, so we’ll see what tomorrow brings. I should probably also do some foam rolling, but tomorrow is another day... The run itself was super soggy—steady rain, but it was still nice. Very peaceful, and all the blooming flowers smelled amazing.

@simcon1 Sorry about your spill on the slopes. Glad you weren't injured any worse than you were.1

@simcon1 I'm jealous of your snowboarding, snow related spill and post spill run even.. and that new board. Pic?
You're tough!
I vacuumed the area rug yesterday. Big adventure 💤
ETA @7lenny7 thanks for the achilles update. I've never had achilles pain so I just couldn't understand. Gimping around sans crutches, I now have achilles pain, tightness really. Shoes seem to help and walking on soft ground is so amazing.7 -

My leg feels twingy after yesterday’s speed work. I also have a big bruise on my thigh that I can’t remember what it is from 🤔
So I took today’s 5 miles slow. It kinda feels worse so I’m torn about what to do. I feel like I should take a few days off, but I never can bring myself to stop.

Uh. Distal oblique fibial fracture. Your friend get a pin, cast or Halo? Not weight bearing bone... So I'm a guess a walking boot. Man that gotta hurt! (Oh yes, practice opportunity 🤓 did I get a 100?.I had a dream I was kicked out of school for cheating. What? So not in my nature).
ETA lovely x ray quality don't you think @Avidkeo ?4 -

Oddness. 🤔... Listen to your body. Visit your doc if you feel concerned. I'm so bad about this one. If it's always on my mind, I just go see someone. I am neurotic and things prey on my mind until they are resolved. Of course it's been warranted in my case, no way I could have "fixed" myself.
Sunlight, pineapple, gentle heat and gentle massage may help that bruise heal/dissipate faster.
How's your iron level?
Best of luck! ((Hehe, annoyingly playing doctor this morning)1 -
@simcon1 - I tough on the fall coming off the lift! I can remember doing that as a kid and being SO embarrassed! Hope the knee is just a bruise and will feel much better soon.
@juliet3455 - I agree with @Elise4270 that is a lovely x-ray but all I could think of was 'ouch!'
So we are making our way through New Mexico. Not much (none) running has happened since Tucson. I have a run planned for tomorrow once we are in Santa Fe. There are trails right outside our hotel!
In a non-running note here is a couple of pictures from where we went yesterday - White Sands National Monument, oh and the UFO museum in Roswell 😁14
