I'm really loving how all these men who have never been pregnant, never will be pregnant, have no clue how it feels to deal with pregnancy hormones all know what a cop-out it is for pregnant women to gain excessive weight.
Perhaps this delusion of expertise is an effect of their hormones?
(Apologies to the majority of men, who have a lick'o'sense, and much, much more. I'm just kidding. I couldn't resist. I don't mean it. The devil made me do it. )
Don'y worry Anne, it's just your crazy woman hormones taking over
Speaking of pregnancy hormones... I will never forget when i went to get a haircut when i was 7mths pregnant, and the MANscaper did a hideous job, i was just about in tears he hacked it that bad! When i asked him to try and fix it, he fobbed me off and said it's probably because I'm pregnant and not thinking straight
I hate it that my 7-months pregnant daughter is so conditioned to her emotions being discounted because hormones that she was beating herself up for getting teary about her 4 year old being sick. Good God woman, your son's been running a fever for 6 days and nobody can figure out why and you're upset! That's not hormones, that's being a parent!10 -

I dunno, I've got one that makes a pretty awesome doorstop.
It's heavy enough to keep the service door open and it has that handle thing so I don't have to bend all the way over to move it out of the way. It's a keeper!9 -

And yes I know not all grains contain gluten, that was an error, I even specifically said gluten in my first post.
There are many people who can eat gluten and dairy and feel fine but that doesn't mean that it is all that healthy for you. In fact 3/4 people are lactose intolerant and many without knowing. Most just aren't born with the enzymes to properly digest these foods. I didn't even know that I was intolerant until I cut them out of my diet for a short time and was then unable eat them again without side affects. However, when looking back, it explains a lot of unexplained abdominal pain that I had before I knew what it was.
Also, just because I believe that we aren't made to eat these foods doesn't I don't think anyone should eat them... I still occasionally do because they are hard to resist. I was just stating that I don't think humans digest these foods well.
Soy, egg, fish, shellfish, stone fruit, sesame, peanut and tree nut allergies are some of the most common kinds of allergy. More common than gluten intolerance. Are we not meant to eat these foods as well? I digest meat and eggs poorly, so humans are not meant to eat meat and eggs.15 -
Wow. I never realised that the gold-class standard for pregnancy was to not notice you were. Glad that guy was here to explain it.30

What about those of us who love and tolerate dairy? I don't think there's been a day since I've been a small child that i haven't had dairy. My breakfast, lunch and dessert contains some sort of dairy every single day.
Well then you are part of the exception and I am jealous of you. However, the symptoms of intolerance aren't always quite so straightforward and obvious as an upset stomach. Not saying that you have an intolerance, just something to think about.
Not really an exception in the western world. If you count worldwide, yes, because lactose intolerance is prevalent in Asia and Africa. But worldwide, white people are an exception, yet that's probably most of what you see when you go out, depending on where you live.1 -

Obesity is because people are too lazy to educate themselves, too lazy to pick up a product and read a label and WAY to lazy to actually buy, bring home and prepare something. I mean why buy an actual head of broccoli when you can buy it in a bag loaded with cheese sauce and sodium.
No other species uses a computer or smart phone. Yet here you are...
And no other species specifically breeds plants and produces cultivators, yet here you are eating broccoli, a human invention.

Any argument which begins with "Humans are the only species that...." is a moot point.
Humans are the only species who do a lot of things. We're the only species who cooks food. We're the only species who refrigerate food. We're the only species who work jobs in exchange for currency. We're the only species who build rocket ships. We're the only species who drive cars, ride bicycles or have public transportation. We're the only species who keeps other species as pets. We're the only species who communicates in written language and archives said communications.
The only thing any of that has to do with anything is that we're the only species who innovates and thinks at a higher level than other species. It's good to be at the top of the chain.
While I do agree with everything you said here, you missed one very important point.

This is one of my pet peeves(obviously not health or nutrition related)
Worldwide water and hunger isn't caused by lack, it's caused by local criminal corruption. Worldwide enough food and clean water is produced annually to feed approximately twice the worlds population, and even discounting overconsumption and waste, there's still enough food to eliminate famine if the local warlords who profit from the famine were removed.
But there are do-gooders and moralists who insist that violence isn't the solution... we just need to love the warlords and the starving people. So they ship rice, and corn, but no guns or security... so the food rots on the pier, or is appropriated in transit by the warlord and destroyed.14 -

dancefit2015 wrote: »I am not religious. When I said "meant to" think of it as "made for" as in humans just aren't able to digest it properly... not as in some magical being in the sky said we shouldn't.
But then that's just false, because many humans can digest both properly.
So those of us who can are "meant to" consume it?
In particular, the vast majority of people with western and northern European ancestry ARE able to digest lactose with no problems (true celiac is quite rare too, and gluten has been part of many human diets for ages). Not sure why I should decide I am not "meant" to consume something I digest just fine because others (a minority with gluten, people with known different genes -- lactase persistence vs. not -- with lactose) have issues. Someone closer to me (I have no relatives I know of who are lactose intolerant or celiac) has problems with some other foods (my sister has several food intolerances), and yet I happily eat those foods too.In fact 3/4 people are lactose intolerant and many without knowing. Most just aren't born with the enzymes to properly digest these foods.
These percentages vary greatly based on where ancestors were from. Lactose intolerance is uncommon for those whose ancestors came from areas where dairy has been a longstanding practice, and is extremely common in some other areas. Stats like the one you give are pretty inapplicable to people from specific areas where dairy was long common.
I've experimented with both grains as a whole and lactose, and digest both well. I find dairy a really easy thing to eat/drink even right before working out hard, something that some find upsets the stomach. I do think I have an issue with corn (not gluten), and I rarely eat wheat (or most other grains) for other reasons (that one can doesn't mean one must), but it's simply false to say I don't digest gluten/dairy well or that humans in general don't. Some don't, and that's an issue for them.8 -
Some of my unpopular opinions:
- Salt is not really an issue for most people.
- There is no hydration level that is optimal for weight loss. Just drink if you're thirsty - you don't need to continually sip from a massive water bottle.
- The fitness industry has no agenda other than to make money - it is not a conscious or controlled entity and therefore doesn't give a *kitten* about your health.
- Your government or social healthcare organisation does not give a *kitten* about your individual health - they give a *kitten* about the general population's health (and the cost impact). Citizens need to consider this when reacting to general population health advice.
- Performance Enhancing Drugs are much, much more widely used than people believe (in sport, competitions, and for vanity), are much, much less dangerous than people are led to believe, and are only "cheating" if you're in a competition which specifically rules against them.
Edited for spelling.18 -

Humans are not meant to travel in space and we still do...
And that is that same how...???
If we were not meant to do it than we should not, right?
I never said that people are wrong for eating it. I really don't care who eats what but this is an opinion board and I was adding mine... that humans aren't made for digesting gluten and dairy.
The reason you are getting pushback is the term "made to" or "meant" -- which, whether you intended it as such or not is a religious statement implying that humans were made with a purpose. (I actually am religious, but think one should be careful about making statements like that outside of a religious context and that mix what we can determine with science and beliefs about purpose or teleology or whatever.)
Beyond that, it's not so much an opinion as a statement of belief about something that either is or is not factual: humans have trouble digesting gluten/dairy. That's simply not true as a generalized statement, as people have pointed out. Some have trouble with one or both of those things, and bummer for them, IMO.3 -

Honestly, I tend to agree with the idea that grown up people should eat grownup food. Which means that for dairy, cheeses, yoghurts, kefirs are more appropriate for adults than milk. But I tend to phrase it as a preference, rather than as a rule.1 -

how is milk not "a grown up food"...just curious.
My husband loves milk...cereal, mixes it with protein shakes, drinks it...my dad used to drink a glass every time he ate french fries...it was his thing.
It's like saying apple just is just for toddlers too...
As for the "not meant to eat grains/dairy" business...whatever...goes along with the post that said we are the only species that drinks the fluid of another animal which is BS..
I expect people originally were barefoot and only lives possibly into their 30s but bam here we are evolved n *kitten* living into our 90's.3 -
I don't believe in not drinking my calories. I like beverages. I drink my water, but I fit in beverages because I like them. Drinking *only* water is not something I want to do.2

Fit it in...live life...just because you are losing weight/maintaining weight doesn't mean you can never eat/drink X again...

If you do eat it that's your choice and that's fine. I eat it sometimes as well. But gluten is an inflammatory food so if you are sick of having aches and pains that don't seem to have an explanation, you might try cutting out gluten. And if you have issues with acne, bloating, and other hormonal issues, you might try cutting out dairy.
I am not a scientist, just a girl with an opinion... that's what this page is for right? OPINIONS? didn't realize that mine was so personally offensive -_-
The idea that we were made, or created, to do or not do anything in particular and that we should avoid doing that which we were not made to do is inherently a religious argument.4 -
