Me, upon finding out my husband brought home a dog: "I can take it for a walk, its been through training for tracking so it won't get tired."
Dog: *sniffs every surface along that mile stretch, including a 5 minute stop while it wonders what atrocities occurred where a deer had been hit by a truck two weeks ago.*
Me: *Worn out from coaxing the dog along my route* "Maybe I will take her for a shorter stretch of my walk tomorrow."
nose work is a job
running is a job. and it can be trained. just like nose work
my dogs are not allowed to sniff while we run. their job is to run.
Of course, puppy is laying in the puddle.
She is a lab.😉 Mud is her middle name 😋7 -
Another after-work run—I forgot my running pants, so had to come home first. Luckily Daylight Savings Time meant that I still had some light to get the miles in. Next up is a 5K this weekend—can’t wait! (First non-kid accompanied one in several years of doing them, for me to actually race!)
March goal: 60 miles

This^^^ I was going to say just what @mbaker566 said. I have several friends with tracking trained dogs (they compete in tracking events) and they also run agility. The dogs know the difference and don't sniff during agility. I would initially teach your dog a 'leave it' command and once it understands it isn't to sniff the walks should be better. You can also teach a release word when you are at a point where the dog can sniff for a bit. If Hobbes the Vizsla were allowed to sniff at will we would never leave our neighborhood and be out for hours, but like @mbaker566's dogs he knows when we are running that is what we are doing.4 -
Thanks for the birthday wishes (no bad luck for early good wishes here!). I had a great day celebrating. High tea with my sisters, then bubbles in the spa with my running buddy, and then pizza followed by cake decorated by my daughters.
...aaaaand then some right wing Australian nutter goes and shoots up a couple of mosques in Christchurch. Unthinkable. Horrific. Awful awful thing to have happen anywhere, let alone peaceful sleepy New Zealand. Sad end to the day.21 -

Was thinking of you today. Happy birthday. And what a *kitten* day. Hope anyone you know down there are all safe and sound.
For context guys, mass shootings just don't happen in NZ. Our last one was 5 years ago when a guy shot 3 people in a welfare office. And before that, 18 years ago. The whole country is shocked and appalled. At the moment 9 people are confirmed dead but the number is expected to be closer to 50. We all just feel so sick. Nz lost its innocence today. 😭12 -
On another note. I won $150 to spend on Nike products. @ContraryMaryMary if you aren't already, jump on iconic sport challenge @orphia and other aussies/kiwis you too.
I'm getting some winter gloves and sleeves thanks to your recommendations. It's fun having a browse. Not sure what else I'll get. It's kinda fun!6 -
@ContraryMaryMary and @Avidkeo and any other New Zealanders in the group - what a shocking thing to have happened. Coming from a country that also has very rare incidents such as this (our last in 2011 and before that 1996 - the incident that led to the banning of handguns in the UK) I know what you are feeling. And it just isn't how New Zealand is assumed to be. It's a peaceful nation (except the whole LOTR thing), and for this to happen just shows how twisted people's minds have become. sorry for such a sad end to your birthday @ContraryMaryMary - but it looks like you had a great day1

despite having slept oddly, I made myself go out for a run this morning.
I didn't think I could make it to the bridge and back, but told myself 'just to the gate and back' (my latest mantra to get me out). Total mileage is about 2 miles (the bridge gives me 3).
We've been having high winds this week, so to the gate was in a head wind. And weirdly, that was exhilarating. The feeling of pushing through into the wind, through the drizzle, actually made me feel more alive than if there'd been no wind.
I hope this is a sign that my health is improving and my mojo might be popping back to say hello!!!9 -

It was my calf muscle or side of calf that just felt a little numb and like it wasn't going to hold. No pain at all. I walked a bit and it seemed ok but then it happened again so I called it quits. Maybe just a little muscle spasm of some kind?
Yes. I have lost my complete right leg many times. It really sucks when you are at Walmart and have to get the groceries and somehow drive home still. Eventually, after x-rays and chiropractors and doctors who all failed to do anything to help, I learned it was the sciatic nerve being pinched, and I learned how to unpinch it from a PT. That PT saved me from back surgery.
Might not be your issue at all. Mine slowly got worse until it was debilitating.
Thanks for mentioning this. Neural impingement does sound like a possibility, but regardless you reminded me I hadn't done my PT exercises for my SI joint which could be related.
@ContraryMaryMary looks like a lovely birthday!
So horrific about the mosque attacks, it's heartbreaking to hear this has happened again in another part of the world (especially where this kind of violence is so rare).1 -
So for those of us from the lands down under... I just listened to an interview with someone from New Zealand and I noticed that EVERY SINGLE SENTENCE stated with "Yeah" 🤔
Is that a thing down there in NZ? It did not matter if he was asked a question or anything. He literally just said "yeah" anytime he wanted to talk.3 -

Well this week is a disaster
I ran ok on Wednesday, then went to run after work yesterday (after my knee felt fine at work all day). I left my KT tape on and got about 2/3 of a mile down the road when my left calf gave me a little scare. A tiny, tiny pop -- which was like 10% of what it felt like when I tore my right calf in 2017. So I stopped, removed the KT tape and tried a little bit more but no dice. Couldn't get more than 3-4 steps before being like, "NOPE, that feels BAD." So I walked right on home. I iced my calf immediately, put on a compression sock, and drowned my sorrows in a fruit beer with my roommate.
Woke up this morning and thought I'd test out how things felt. Put on some KT tape on my knee, compression sleeves on my calves, and my roommate goes, "Weren't you just telling me about how dumb it is that people come into the running store complaining about injuries they've been running through for like ages? And wearing all this gear and stuff instead of just resting?" And I was like, "Shut up!" and went out to run. I made it about 3 blocks and then turned around; calf felt totally normal, but my knee felt AWFUL. I saw my roommate leaving the house as I walk-of-shame'd back and she was like, "Take a rest!" and I was like, "Okay fine."
But honestly... if I have to tape my knee and wear compression sleeves just to try to run... probably a good sign I should just rest. Gotta figure out what is wrong with me knee; it just feels like the bottom corner is off-track, but only when running now; it feels fine when I'm walking, standing, etc. I suspect it's a resurgence of plica band syndrome, which I last had in 2014 or 2015. I think I just rested it and it went away fairly quickly on its own.
My mom gets into town tonight so I'll probably just use her visit as an excuse to do very low mileage without feeling bad about it. If this knee thing resolves itself by next weekend, imagine how amazingly well rested I'll be for my half marathon!!?

I had to abort my run after 2 miles on Tuesday and am resting until tomorrow. Of course, it was 60 and sunny here yesterday. Driving home from work it seemed like everyone in the world emerged from their caves to be outside and it was killing me. At least I got in a nice long dog walk with my husband when I got home.
@lporter Thanks! The worst part is that it is finally nice weather... warm but not humid yet, and I just want to enjoy it! Hope you get a good bit of running in soon!0 -

14 miles, slow and easy.
Yesterday was a good day, for the most part.
I wasn't sure when I'd be able to leave work so I went up and down 59 flights of stairs during the day.
Then I was able to leave on time and when I got home I found out that my son and his girlfriend were at a friend's house for the evening, freeing me up to run. I certainly took advantage of that!
I ran the miles solo. It was raining and my wife hates it when I come home with a wet Kody, and I've found that road running during the spring melt gives Kody a VERY dirty bottom half with all the road grime splashing up on him.
It was upper 30's F, raining, and quite windy. Had it not been for the wind I think I would have gone in shorts and a single long sleeved shirt but I wore tights and through on a very light Patagonia Houdini jacket as a wind layer.
It had reached mid 40's during the day so as expected, most of the streets were clear of snow and ice but in their place were puddles and rivers of snow melt. Being nighttime, it was difficult to avoid the icy puddles. That I can handle but it was also difficult to avoid the potholes, and there were a few times I had to quickly correct my step to avoid a twisted ankle. As has been frequently the case my feet were partially numb by the end of the run.
The worst of the run came right away. Three blocks from my home at the stop light the snow hadn't completely melted and, in fact, had turned to ice. When pressing the "Walk" button, the incline of the wet ice caused me to fall, absorbing the impact with my *kitten*, elbow, and wrist, and straining my left hip flexor and right hip joint. I ran anyway, but felt slight pain off and on throughout the run.

15Mar - 8.85 miles (outside)
Total so far: 16.25 miles of 40.
After overdoing it at the gym Monday followed by Zumba on Tuesday, I decided to celebrate my legs feeling normal again today by running the longest distance I have ever run! *mini celebration dance* Not going to lie, I did find it tough, especially towards the end but I think that's because I spent much of it running in to the 35-40mph gusts of wind we have - I had to stop and walk a few times just so I didn't get blown over!
I think maybe if it hadn't been so windy today I may have been able to run for a bit longer. Possibly also need to slow down a bit as my aim is 7mins a km, not the 6:30mins I was doing today. Not going to dwell on that for now though, instead I am going to have a nice hot bubble bath then eat the cake my husband got me as a treat!
If I don't get a chance to pop back on over the weekend, good luck to anyone running on Saturday/Sunday!11 -
Ouch! @7lenny7 , I bet you’ll be sore tomorrow. Rub some bacon on it.
@Squish815 Congrats on that cake, er longest run! Way to go in that wind too! Yikes! I had a hard time just walking in it the other day.
@kristinegift Sorry to hear about the knee problem. I suspect your right in thinking it’s the plica band returning to haunt you. Didn’t you do rehab for it before? Have you looked in to releasing it surgically? Not advocating surgery-surgery suuuuucks. I’m always a big fan of ultrasound therapy. Good luck with it.
Hooray to @girlinahat ! Love that you had a good run! Nothing like the good ones to remember why “we” keep at it!
4 days to my 2 week follow-up... wonder if I’ll be allowed to run, bike, drive ... swim, wade in the pool yet.12 -

Having conducted a highly scientific survey of youtube clips of actors from New Zealand, it does seem that "yeah" might be the kiwi equivalent of "uh" or "um". The worst offender I found was the kid from Riverdale followed by the kid from Deadpool 2, so there might be an age element?2 -

Thank you @Elise4270 The only upside was the few times the wind was behind me, pretty sure that helped me pace! Hope you're allowed a wade in the pool at your follow up!

Happy belated to @amirahdaboss and @ContraryMaryMary .
@7lenny7 hope you're not too sore today!
@Elise4270 hope you're upcoming visit goes well.
1 mile and change before PT circuit training this morning, little over 6 in yesterday. Pick up the new trail shoes tomorrow and going to try them out/break them in right away. Hope is for somewhere between 12 and 18 tomorrow. Then easy runs next week, and taper the following culminating in a trial trail marathon on 3/30. I am still not sure what snack to bring for the aid station, any suggestions?
Also have signed up for a 10K in Rainsville, AL, that looks like a load of fun. this one . If anyone else in the group is running it please let me know, I will be in town Friday evening and all day Saturday before the race, and would enjoy putting faces with names usernames,5 -
Super sad day for the Muslim community worldwide. I woke up to the livestream of the New Zealand shooting on my twitter and burst into tears. Horrifying, and makes me scared to go to the mosque! May they Rest In Peace!
On a running note, it’s a beautiful day for running today. 60 degrees and cloudy and it smells like its gonna rain! I went to the gym and ran a bit but I may get out again later to enjoy the weather.

@workaholic_nurse I'm a bit sore from the run for some reason, but the fall didn't seem to leave any lasting pain. I've never heard of a race which required entrants to bring snacks for the aid station. I like Oreos, M&M's, orange slices, banana halves, pickles, pretzles, and miniature candy bars like snickers. Fireball is nice too.5
-
@amirahdaboss - It makes me sad and horrified that such a terrible thing could happen (again) in a place of worship and during prayers. I don't think anyone should ever have to be afraid to go into their chosen place of worship... such craziness in the world!
@7lenny7 - hope you aren't too sore and banged up from that fall!
@Squish815 - Good for you running in that wind!!
What's up with the wind these days - seems like we are all having strong winds! We are having Santa Ana winds off the desert and even though the desert isn't hot yet the winds are dry and warm. Nice but very windy today but will be in the 80's(F) over the weekend.
So I may have entered the lottery this morning for this race in November. It looks like the Nike Women's races they used to have and I always wanted to run. Nike hasn't had one in a long time but this looks to be a great one. A pretty much flat course in Palm Desert in late November! My Oiselle group set up a team for entry so it is likely we will get in! It will be expensive but I figure it is a once in a lifetime event. Also it has a 5 hour cutoff so worse case I could walk it.

Yeah, it really is.
Our favourite phrase "yeah, nah"5 -
So just woke, still feeling a bit shocked. Thw shooter was an Australian who wanted to take out migrants. Wonder if he sees the irony.
Scrolling through Facebook and news items, and I'm humbled again and again alby the love and support being given to the Muslim community in NZ and around the world. There were 4 people who spewed hate and fear, but 5 million who don't. That's pretty special.
And our prime minister really stepped up. She's absolutely amazing. You could hear the emotion in her voice and she said just the right words.
As for running. I had a good week, not too much but enough that I feel much better. Yay11 -

I'm sorry to say that I've become rather hardened to gun violence as a reality of life in the US - after Sandy Hook in particular, it just felt like nothing would change and I had to go on with my life or spend all my time in a ball under the blankets. I've been humbled seeing some of the younger generation speaking up more recently, however, so who knows what the future may hold. Anyhow, it hurts my heart to see this happen in a more peaceful country like New Zealand, and I'm thinking of all of you, as well as Muslim communities all across the world.4 -
Rest day today. Spent 4 hours in the car getting to Virginia Beach. Several annoying stretches of construction and traffic, but much less stressful with plenty of time built in. I'll call the plan of taking 2 days to get here a winner.
I actually got to the expo before it closed, picked up my bibs, and went to talk to the folks at the registration desk. J&A Racing had sent me an ad to upgrade my half marathon to the Dolphin Challenge (8K + Half Marathon). But I was already registerd for the 8K. Question: Am I in the Dolphin Challenge for running both races, or am I not in it because the USATF Masters 8K is technically a different race than the Towne Bank Shamrock 8K? Turns out I can't be counted for Dolphin Challenge standings without messing up the USATF bib. But the nice lady traded my half marathon bib for a Dolphin Challenge bib, so I can get the Dolphin Challenge medal for running both races. Which is why I need two singlets, since I won't be able to do laundry between the 8K tomorrow and the half on Sunday:
And speaking of multiple races on the same weekend . . . I thought of @PastorVincent when I was at the expo. I saw an oval magnet with 48.6 inside. The caption around the margin said, "This was a Dopey idea." If I were contemplating the Dopey Challenge, I would have bought one.12
