April 2019 Monthly Running Challenge

@Tramboman - so glad it is a muscle strain an not something with a bone or joint! Sounds like time, gentle stretching (yoga), etc.. will get you back to feeling better! Did they recommend any specific stretches or PT or anything?
@eleanorhawkins - I like your training plan but if you feel like you don't need to ramp down and start all over again with each plan you really don't have to. Like others have said do what works for you to transition from one to the other, without any huge jumps in distance or pace and plenty of recovery.
Taking it slow and easy today. Waited for the rain to pass and headed out in the sunshine and then the clouds moved back in. It sure looked like we were going to get wet. Heard distant thunder but only got just a few sprinkles. It was nice and cool in the low 60's though.
This was a picture from last week that I forgot to post here. It is hard to get Hobbes the Vizsla to look at the phone or camera but I managed to 'catch' him smiling in this one, or at least it looks to me like he was smiling. He did really enjoy that run on Friday.
That is goal for me and my last run for April. I can't believe I finally made it back to 100miles. First 100 mile month in 7 months!

Gentle stretching, especially that which puts some mild torque on the lower back, was recommended. I have a yoga routine specifically for the hamstrings and lower back, but it's far too rigorous to attempt at this point. Time (and drugs) heal all wounds. I just need to be careful and not go all crackerdog on things that will result in aggravating the injury (like my little 3k walk last Sunday).5 -
PastorVincent wrote: »Ran my first miles since injury. 5 miles at a little faster than easy pace at a park which is about as flat as it comes around here. Was really hard to get going, but once I got going seemed okay. As long as I do not do something stupid I should be okay for the Marathon...
That's great news.0 -

Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Missed April goal, but am optimistic about recovering and getting back to running in May.

4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)

Yesterday I got to run 2.9 miles in really nice mid-50s weather. I’d planned on taking the extended route to the gym and walking home, but got out the door late so ended up running the direct route there and part of the way home. My legs were tired after deadlifts and KB swings (it turns out May is “let’s do a million KB swings at the gym because WHY NOT!?!”) but not too bad. I stopped after about a mile on the way home because of a little bit of twinging from my right knee. Ice yesterday night and rest and prehab today and hopefully it’ll shut up. I was a little tempted to try and hit 40 today but I will definitely not be doing that. 35 miles is a lifetime PR for April mileage so I'll take it.

@Avidkeo Congrats!
In keeping with my upcoming month's goals, no run today. Upper body lift session (biceps, shoulders and back) for an hour. 56 miles in April puts me well short of my goal of 100 but, meh, life happens. See everyone in next month's thread!6 -
Great job on the Spartan @katharmonic! and we all know that you will do the next Spartan to fill out the pie.
It's like when a new runner finish's there first race that pushed them to the limits and they #!!## that they will never do another race - 3 weeks later they are signing up for a new event.katharmonic wrote: »I now have 2 of the 3 pieces of the Trifecta "pie". They are magnetized and stick together which is kind of cool. It's going to take a little while to consider whether I'm up for completing the third piece - which fortunately is "only" 8+ miles but given the brutality of this one I didn't have that same "OMG so fun" feeling I did after the sprint. But I do feel really proud of having done this at all.Honestly I just wanted to be first to post my goal 🤣
Thanks for setting us up for May @shanaber - I might wait until the 4th to post anything6 -

@AlphaHowls Wow! Amazing. My husband wants to know why your legs don’t just fall off. Right now I’m waiting for the AC repairmen (again) but if I get out later I will walk 3.65 in tribute to your amazingness.

Way too fast... but 5 done without issue. So I think I am good to race this weekend as long as I do not do anything stupid between now and then. So chances are not really that great.12 -
@AlphaHowls ah-may-zing! So inspiring3

I thought I wasn't going to run yesterday when it started raining, but it cleared up later in the evening and I was able to go out for the run. I usually don't go out running later in the evening, but it nice to go out and enjoy the sunset.

If I had realized that today's run would put me so close to 100 miles for April I might have gone a little further. As it is I ran 5.03 miles this morning to wrap up April at 99.14 miles. It was already hot at ~72F with 85% humidity and a dew point of 62. I think I am at that point in my training for the HM that I am starting to feel tired, and this heat makes me feel discouraged about how I will do on the 18th. I'm trying to focus on the fact that not all races will be PR's and I still think it is likely that I will run this HM much better than I did last year when it was my first ever HM. I just don't know that I can run as fast in the heat of May as I could in the cool of February, so my PR from the February HM will probably stand. We'll be going on vacation the week after the HM and we are going to Colorado, so I am really looking forward to the rest and the cooler temperatures. I'll see you all over in the May thread!
@AlphaHowls You are a beast! I don't know how you do it! Congrats on the streak.

@AlphaHowls Just WOW!
Tapering here, did 4 early sunny chilly miles this morning. I do love all the birds and gorgeous mountains, if not the hour. The HM starts at 7 am, though, so I’m thinking if I run at 6:xx 3 mornings this week 7 a.m. on Sunday will feel late? No one needs to disabuse me of my wishful thinking here...
Also, I’ve added a new run to my race plan—a bubble run 5K. Watch out, world! (More like, if this is what it takes to keep my kids moving, I’m game!)

Super close to my goal so I'll take it! Last two days just weren't meant for running, but I was excited to at least squeeze in 5 miles on my lunch break today.
My Run For the Wild 5k at the Bronx Zoo on Saturday was so much fun! It seriously is one of my favorite days of the year. Between the run and spending the rest of the day at the zoo I racked up 28k steps, lol. I was also the number 3 overall fundraiser thanks to so many awesome people who donated, including a few of you!
My phone died partway through the day so I didn't get to take nearly as many animal pics as I usually do, which I'm sure my FB friends were thankful for. But, thank goodness it was still working so I could get a pic of me totally fangirling over meeting Jim Breheny and a few of the other people who are on the Animal Planet docuseries The Zoo, about the Bronx Zoo. All in all, a pretty perfect day!

@Avidkeo congrats!
@katharmonic wow, amazing job on the Spartan!3 -
@AlphaHowls, what a truly amazing accomplishment. Most of us can't comprehend that kind of mileage but the dedication is something we can all take inspiration from. Congratulations on a full year of running.
@KatieJane83 congrats on your 5k and your fundraising achievement! Sounds like a great day.
Congrats to all those making their goals this month.

2.5 on the treadmill today, taking it easy. It felt a little rough at first but better as I warmed up. Followed by some light strength training - mostly mobility and core work - and yoga.
I did not personally make my goal of 100 miles for April, coming up just 3.7 short. 1 more day of running would have done it, but I'm not too disappointed. I took some extra rest days at the beginning and end of the month, but had a 16-day streak in the middle. I'm feeling like my post-Spartan race recovery is going well at this point. Definitely less sore than I would have predicted, which makes me have some hope for running the Mountain Goat race on Sunday without feeling like my legs are going to die on me.
See you all in the May thread!8 -
@katharmonic Wow, excellent job on your Spartan race!
@polskagirl01 Congrats on your 5K and that final kick for a well-deserved PR!
@Avidkeo Congrats on the new job!

Got called late last night with work, so I didn't know whether I was going to be able to get up for this morning's run. I needed just half a mile to make goal, but managed another 7 miles...see you all in May.

Ran a couple of miles today finishing up April at 30.29/30 miles. I'm not sure if I'm going to join in for May. Apparently because of some issues I'm having I should be wearing compression garments when I run, like it's not hot enough here in Phoenix. We'll see, I guess.10

UGH! This whole "keep the mileage low so you can race Saturday" sucks. Did a little speed work last night just for the heck of it.

Friday morning, I was a little short of the planned 2.5, but told my husband I'd be back in half an hour... 29 minutes later I had run 2.28 miles. Close enough! I took a quick shower and we were out the door for a weekend road trip to visit his parents. Saturday was a rest day, though walked a little.
Sunday morning was just barely above freezing when I got up, so I decided to wait until after breakfast to run. Homemade blueberry pancakes, scrambled eggs and peaches fueled my longest run to date. My husband ran just under 5 miles with me, then helped his dad with some yardwork and maintenance activities he was having trouble doing.
Monday we ate out for both breakfast and lunch, then drove home. This morning I got up and walked a couple miles with the dogs. After breakfast, I went out for my run. I ran too fast and should have worn my other shoes, but I met my stretch goal!
See you all in May!7
