@shanaber I tried the ace bandage wrap last night and it really seemed to work. There was at least 1 tornado less than 30 miles away, and lots of thunderstorms overnight and Pup didn't cry and wake us up like she did the night before. The rain should be moving out of the area for a while, but I think I will look into finding an actual thundershirt for her.
@kgirlhart - YAY! That is such great news! Also I am so glad that tornado didn't get any closer to you!1 -
and my annual Door County Half has been cancelled. trying to decide what to do with the motel reservations3
-
@Tramboman - love the Earthworm 7K! Right up there with the Turtle 3K (or 10K) 🐢 Congratulations on beating out all those worms to get 1st place!
@kimlight2 - honestly I am thankful for all of you and having a place to be lighthearted and commiserate at the same time!
I am thankful that our doggy daycare place, where Hobbes goes once a week just to get the crazies out, is still open. They implemented a drive through drop off so no one has to go into the office and you pay over the phone if you need to.
I am thankful for the friends I see online offering to help anyone who can't get out for groceries or errands or to foster pups if someone gets sick and can't take care of theirs.
Have you all heard of the trend, if you will, to get people to put their Christmas lights back up? It gives people who are staying home (most of us) something lovely to look at just by opening our doors at night or going for a neighborhood drive if allowed. I am going to see if I can find some lights online in spring/easter colors to put up. I think it would be fun and just brighten things up for everyone.
Also one more good news item that is sort of running related. About a month ago I submitted a complaint/request to my city about my neighborhood sidewalks. I don't typically walk or run on them if I can avoid it because they are so bad and I have tripped and fallen more than once (actually the reason I had to have hand surgery a couple of years ago). Well I noticed the other day there were little markings at many of the broken/uneven places and the last few days they have had crews here grinding them down and today they are taking out and re-laying new cement for the worst areas. It makes me so happy! We really can make a difference sometimes by just asking.12 -
@kimlight2 I'm grateful that my company is being very supportive while a lot of us are working from home.
I'm grateful for the jokes I'm sharing with my family over group chats and that nobody I love has yet been directly impacted by this illness.
I'm grateful for the ability to run outside.

I can barely keep up with this thread so I haven’t posted much this month. I’ve kept up with reading and gave lots of likes and hugs. Although my races for the next three weekends are cancelled I was able to participate in Peyton’s Wild and Wacky 50K this past weekend before things started tightening down. The lengthy race report is below if anyone is bored and wants to read about racing since we can’t really participate in any right now.
@Duck_Puddle – I loved your description of running in Moab and it’s now on my bucket list too!
@ContraryMaryMary – Congrats on your HM!On Saturday I participated as part of a 2-person relay team in Peyton’s Wild and Wacky 50K. The race is held in a park in Mt. Pleasant, SC. This year made the sixth annual running. The couple who organize the race put it on in honor of their 9-year old son (Peyton) who passed away unexpectedly in 2013. The boy ran with his mom and dad (his dad is a running coach), always encouraging to everyone and camped in this park as a Boy Scout. Even though Peyton was a speedy runner he would slow down and run with the slower runners. What makes the race wild and wacky is that it is composed of 10 x 5ks and you run a 5K every hour on the hour. Everyone started their first 5K at 8:00 am and no matter how speedy you complete that first 5K, you can’t start the next one until 9:00 am and so it goes until the last 5K is run at 5:00 pm. The race is a sell-out every year.
There were several of us traveling down from northeast Tennessee. A couple of guys were doing a 2-person relay and some other girls from my morning running group were doing a 5-person relay. Mid-day Friday, six of us loaded in a mini-van and headed out on the 5-hour drive. We rented a house in Wild Dunes for the weekend. A couple of friends were driving their truck and leaving early Friday morning so they graciously took our camp chairs, pop-up tent and changing tent and set it up for us Friday evening. The atmosphere at this race is very relaxed and fun. Everyone sets up tents in the park and hangs out in between the running their legs. And food! They fed us all day long. This year, for hygiene purposes all snacks were individually packaged. A food truck serving BBQ catered lunch and there was a coffee truck there with free coffee. You could also purchase the fru-fru coffee drinks so I had an iced mocha at one point. I couldn’t stomach the thoughts of eating BBQ and then going back out to run shortly thereafter but a lot of people handled it fine.
I ran the race in 2017 as a solo participant and this time I was a little worried about having more down time in between the 5ks. Although I would only be running 25K instead of the full 50K, I was afraid I would get stiff in between the legs. All went well. The temperature was between 65F – 70F all day and breezy. Being in SC though it was pretty humid. I sat down some when I was “off” but we also played frisbee, cheered on other runners, visited with friends and people-watched so the time passed quickly. A group set up next to us were from the Mission 22 organization which raises awareness of veterans suicide and at the end of each leg would do 22 push-ups. Another group of firefighters suited up and ran each leg with a tank on their back.
Having fun in between legs
I did Legs 1, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Due to some flooded trails, they changed the course this year. In the past it has been one 5K loop but this year there were several out and back sections. And dogs! A lot of people brought their dogs on leashes and all of them were well-behaved. The dogs weren’t allowed on the course so they just hung out at camp.
I’m grateful they didn’t cancel the race. Even though it was a decent sized crowd of runners everything was outside. There were hand-washing stations and hand sanitizer available. It was a beautiful day to be outside. I wasn’t too sore or tired the next day. I would definitely do this race again.
Ready to head out for lap 96 -
@kgirlhart Like @shanaber I wrapped my girl. I did have a Thundershirt when we moved at the time of my divorce (2015) and it worked wonders. I loaned it out and never got it back. Drats. When I was getting ready to move (2019), she started stressing again, so I used a scarf & wrapped her and it did work.3

Was exhausted when I woke up this morning. Got dressed for the run, still was in the "don't wanna!" mode, but went out anyway. Once I was out there, felt pretty good. Afterward, looked over the pace time & realized I actually ran faster than I have since Sept of last year!
Still planning on starting the HM training in May for the August HM. Hopefully by then things will be getting back to some kind of normality.7 -
@Duck_Puddle Great pictures. What a gorgeous place .....it's on my ever-growing bucket list!
@Avidkeo - Yikes! Stay safe! The CDC here just changed their guidelines regarding healthcare workers being able to continue working even after exposure. Desperate times, desperate measures.
@shanaber I love the idea of xmas lights....my husband will be less pleased as we have a really tall palm tree that I make him help me wrap the trunk like 8 feet up.
@kimlight2
I am thankful for having a healthy family so far
I am thankful for being able to hit the nursery and get some flowers to plant
I am thankful for all of the healthcare workers risking their health to save lives
I am thankful for social media, email, zoom and phones- this extrovert is in for a long haul.5 -
I'm thankful for the elderly man at the grocery store stocking shelves yesterday who smiled at me and reminded me so much of my dad. I just wanted to hug him.
I'm thankful that my daughter safely landed in Florida yesterday and is with my mom and happy and healthy.
I'm grateful that we have 5 playgrounds within walking distance from my house.
I'm thankful that despite not having bread or yeast that some super sweet people here gave me great no yeast baking suggestions so now I have bread. Trial and error first time, I cut my × too deep but the flavor is still delicious. I'm proud of it, first time I've ever baked bread from scratch.
I'm thankful for God's love and another day.

I'm thankful that I have a home to be confined to.
I'm thankful that (so far) my family remains healthy.
I'm thankful that I always work from home so can continue to do the little work I have.
I'm thankful I didn't sell my I'd-rather-be-deadmill.
I'm thankful I have so far resisted murdering my husband (though I don't know how long I can keep that up!)

Nope, cause when you WIN the race, you do not also place in your AG. Sorry, that is the breaks.
We had to email some kind of record of our activity and they will ship out the swag.
I sent mine and she replied “great. I’ll add you to the results”.
The what now?
I guess I’m taking that whole finish times live on the internet forever in a WHOLE new direction LOL.
The pictures were totally worth it.

I decided to sign up for the Hot Chocolate virtual 5k. Figure it will be something to do. I usually do the 15k but I'm more in the 5k runs right now. They are also counting the virtual towards the legacy so I think I have 4 years now (I have more but I missed a year when they weren't doing legacy). I believe their "season" is Fall 2019-Spring 2020. I skipped the Dec 2019 race here but from what I read the virtual race now is the same "year".5

Well done!
Thanks.
Truth be told, even though they were young, they weren't very fast.
But a win is a win, right?
How do you know they were young? Did you ask for ideas? Maybe they were elderly.
They can live up to 10 years, although those in the wild only live 1-2 years.
Plus, none of them were nearly as gray as I am.4 -
@Teresa502 Sounds like a wonderful race and a good time.1

rest day here, and our first 2 cases of confirmed covid in my city, fortunately not patients I've worked with. I suspect by the end of the weekend NZ will be in full lock down. And I KNOW I'm going have have an exposure! Probably early next week. I'm working over the weekend so... We will be taking all precautions, but sadly it's not 100%
Ugh! Stay safe!
Well it's official. NZ borders are CLOSED. Unless you live here, you can't get in.
This may not seem like much, but we tend to be so isolated down here, so to be completely locked down like this, it feels very very real. I mean we are an island anyway but it just feels even more isolating.
Thank goodness my husband and I decided not to fly to Fiji this morning!
Me stuck in one country, my kids in another - my worst case scenario.
Silver lining, you'll get your refund?
I have just gone through the process of trying to get refunds for my trip in May, most of it has been pretty straightforward, but one motel was like, nah ah. You paid non refundable rate, tough. And while I want to be sympathetic, there wasn't even an offer of a credit or anything! Even the hotel that we cancelled the same day gave us a credit to use!2 -
Well it’s been a bit of a trial here the last few days. School is still open but will (mostly?!) close from tomorrow. So we have been scrabbling around trying to plan all the remote learning while still teaching, all the while with staff dropping out self-isolating with symptoms. Not to mention worrying about my own family. Not an easy time to be a full-time teacher single parent!!
But I’m trying to get out in the mornings and run as often as I can. For my mental health as much as anything. @kimlight2 I agree we should concentrate on the positives. I’m very thankful that my family and I are still healthy, that we have friends to help us, shelter and food if we have to be locked down.
Meantime I have overshot my March goal. Glad I’m keeping up and really happy my speeds are improving and fitness (hopefully!) returning.

Morning.
No news here, but I suspect we will hear of more cases around 1pm - that seems to be when we are getting all the updates. I predict around the 40 mark today, with over 100 by the end of the weekend. We are definitely at the beginning of the exponential curve, so it's only a matter of time. Currently ALL of our cases are people who have come back from overseas, so I think officials are hoping that by closing the borders, that will stop Cases coming in, but I think they know its already here.
Work yesterday got information about who would have to stay home if schools closed (fortunately not me) and who has any health conditions. I reluctantly admitted to my extremely mild, mostly exercise induced, well under control asthma. I suspect that will put me in the middle of the rostering pile.
Basically we are making plans on how to work the department when we get an outbreak, and people are forced to self isolate. We already have strict rules about who can be xrayed and under what conditions. And we practice personal protection. But we are all aware nothing is perfect.
I am so thankful that I earn enough that hubby can stay home with the kids, that I am healthy, and that I have 3 pairs of running shoes, because I think im going to need them!
Did a 6.5k training run this morning. It was very nice getting out and listening to my favourite podcast. 8k planned for tomorrow! I realise 8m now not going to hit my goal, but as I'm no longer running every day and actually sticking to a running plan, my goal is to meet the plan.

I am thankful that I am healthy still (despite somehow being in the "high risk" category, over 50 & with asthma). That I can still run and walk, can still go to the store , do my schoolwork and function.
Thankful that I have a safe environment that I can spend this time with my partner to wait this crazy period out. We have enough food here to last a while (hopefully his teenager sons don't go too crazy when they are here next week), entertainment options, and I have enough yarn.
Thankful that our tax returns came in right now so we have some money to make it through as neither of us are working now (I work part time through my campus and he drives for Lyft!) and who knows WHEN we will be able to again.
Thankful I still have family and friends and so far, knock wood, we all are good.7 -
@dreamer12151 Some of my best runs are the ones that begin with "I don't wanna," but I push myself out the door anyway.4
-
Let's share some things we are thankful for in this insanity.
I am thankful that I work for a company that is sending everyone home to work as fast as they can. (I already work remotely at least 3 days a week so nothing new for me.)
I am thankful my family is still healthy and not stir crazy... yet.
I am thankful I can still go outside and run and stay away from people.
I am thankful I have enough food incase they close grocery stores to last for 2 or 3 weeks, even with a 16 yr old boy. Toilet paper may be an issue after week 2.
What are you thankful for?
I love this @kimlight2. A great idea to spread some positivity.- I am thankful that I live in New Zealand where most of the population is fairly relaxed and not inclined to panic, and where we have an abundant supply of food and toilet paper
- I am thankful that our government seems to get the seriousness of both the virus and the associated economic slump and is taking a responsible approach to both
- I am thankful that I am a runner and even if things shut down I can still get out and run
- I am thankful my husband and I are financially secure so when things get tough economically, we'll be ok
- I am thankful I already work from home, and that my husband is also self-employed and can largely work from home too if he needs/wants to
- I am thankful to have a house and section big enough, so that if we're obliged to stay at home, we're not living on top of each other and the children can still run around outside
- I am thankful my children are not at all worried about the coronavirus and are happy and laughing and sleeping as they should
- I am thankful that my husband is enough of a bulk shopper that we have enough meat and booze for at least six months anyway, plus he's topped us up in all the rest so we can avoid the supermarket for the next couple of months or more
- I am thankful for all the amazing and dedicated people who selflessly work in the medical profession
- I am thankful we have the brains and technology to get on top of this virus and find a vaccine sooner rather than later
- I am thankful for my health and the health of my family
- I am thankful for all you lot out there in virtual running land for sharing my passion for running and understanding the highs and lows of the sport
