@quilteryoyo look again - there are TWO ducks! The female blends in and we didn't see her in real life right away, either. Also great job on your long run!2

Nice work @Teresa502 and @kgirlhart2

TheMrWobbly wrote: »What a beautiful day for it!!! my apologies for my tardiness checking in today, I know I am little late and should have posted by, erm... February!
Interesting time, injured my knee in Jan, made it worse in Feb coming back too early, two year ends at my new job (we have Dec and our parent Co has Mar), every week I was the bad news bear - £30k worse for this, £50k worse for that until eventually I made the magical "Your results are £1M worse than when you bought the company last year" - good job on the due diligence Mr Auditor!
In the process many nights without sleep, stuffing my fat face (I knew what I was doing and ate a whole 3kg bag of jelly beans in a week) and no exercise so I imagine I will be around 230 lbs when I weigh in tomorrow.
The past cannot be changed, cycled to and from work for the last couple of days. Year end and most of the audit completed so I can get back to a routine. A long way from my target of running a marathon later this year but I have to do this!
I have read through all the posts I missed, well maybe skim read a bit - there was over 1,000!!!!
@Camaramandy648 achievements abound, congratulations on the On run crew appointment, surviving bee stings and a belated happy birthday
@hamsterwheel6 I'm not sure what Morton's Neuroma is but it sounds like Morton should keep it to himself!
@kirstymn hope the parkrun is a regular thing, still waiting for them to restart in the UK
@rheddmobile some great runs and fantastic that your hip is all good
@martaindale brilliant HM time!
@Faebert I totally feel you with injury and UK lockdown, I'll follow your lead and get back out there
@shanaber good to see you are recovering, I hope you neighbour is okay after the cat attack!
@skippygirlsmom you have got more steps in than me and you are just out of a cast - good to have you up and around again
@ContraryMaryMary the Mairaeta HM looks like a great challenge, not sure I'm ready for uphills again just yet
@RunsOnEspresso fantastic signing up for the virtual BM, keep us in the loop on how the training is going
@Katharmonic very impressed, especially the 'injured' HM
@Avidkeo another great HM and I am sad I missed tracking you through it
@polskagirl01 glad your rest worked out and your quads have decided to do what they are told!
@quilteryoyo you have a lovely grand-niece
@eleanorhawkins you are unusually quiet, what are you planning
My apologies to you and the others ( @Scott6255 @AlphaHowls @Tramboman @Teresa502 @kgirlhart @marisap2010 and others) for not keeping up on the Run the World challenge and thank you to @quilteryoyo and others for keeping things 'real' on the way!
Welcome and welcome back to the newbies and returnees
Right, day 1 of my new streak. I am again fat, fat with a capital FATBASTA.. and I am going to try a gentle 5k to kick things off.
I am not qualified to join in on the 'leakage' discussion so I can only refer you to youtube
To everyone else feel free to share something more with us, I'd love to hear successes, offer support or just have a good laugh together.
Keep safe, stay awesome!!!
@TheMrWobbly not planning anything, just so busy I can't keep up!
The trail club is great fun, but sooooo hard. It's usually just me and 4 or 5 guys, which my husband is REALLY pissed about 🤣 and their easy pace is about my 5k race pace, so umm yeah, I'm exhausted. Just praying my legs don't go on strike.

@Teresa502 and @kgirlhart Look at you all running real races with real people! Great job both of you! @Teresa502 AG group place!! @kgirlhart So impressed with your PR!3
-
Gosh, the Run the World group is almost to Memphis! Thanks for the heads up @quilteryoyo !
When I checked they were passing through Bolivar, which was known when I was growing up for being the place with the scary asylum. It was originally housed what is called a Kirkbride building - if you have ever seen a scary movie with a gothic looking asylum, it was most likely designed by a man named Kirkbride, whose original idea was to make stepped buildings so that every patient would have access to fresh air. They may look creepy to us today but we’re considered a huge step up at the time! Bolivar’s Kirkbridge building is situated on a high hill and visible from some distance from the road, and it is reportedly haunted. We used to tell ghost stories about it when I was in high school - a great way to pass the time on road trips, since we always passed Bolivar shortly after leaving Memphis. Back in the day it was called Western State Hospital. The old Kirkbride building is no longer used for patients but there is still a psychiatric hospital there today, Western Mental Health Institute.Then:
And now:
Next the route passes through the tiny community of Elba, within half a mile of my mom’s house, where I grew up. Speaking of haunted houses, the Run the World route also passes right by a circa 1840 antebellum plantation house, the Old Miller Place, which was abandoned when I used to live there. When I was a teenager, the boy who lived across the street and I used to walk down there all the time. Once we even held a Halloween party in the abandoned house! Back then it was completely empty, just a giant empty hall with high ceilings and a massive wooden fan over the front door. There were also several surviving outbuildings, including former slave cabins. I remember on that Halloween we dared each other to go down to the slave cabins at night. I don’t know if it was haunted - I think the main danger was probably snakes living up under the cabins - but it was certainly creepy to walk there in the dark and think about all the things that had happened there. Today the house has been restored as a wedding venue, and the slave cabins have been turned into a dressing room and waiting area for the groom, of all things. The present owners have rechristened the place Heartwood Hall, and - this makes me a little sad - removed the original giant fan from above the door, replacing it with a much prettier but not nearly as interesting window. Oh well!Heartwood Hall now:
Can’t find a picture of the house from before it was restored, but I did find this description from the National Historical Landmark registry, not super flattering! It was true when it was written, Elba was a time capsule - basically descendants of the same people who worked the land 150 years ago. Two fields down from us there was a sharecropper’s field where they still picked cotton by hand, and I was often late to school because I got stuck driving behind a piece of farm equipment on a one lane road. Less true now though, there are modern houses going in everywhere.
The route crosses the road just north of my mom’s front pasture!
From there, the route continues southwest towards Collierville and the Wolf River bottoms, where my husband and I do most of our trail running. It goes past the Collierville Greenbelt trailhead, which is where we spent most of lockdown running since hardly anyone ever goes there. It’s mostly gravel trails but we were very thankful for it! Then on past one of our favorite running places, WC Johnson park in Collierville, several miles of well groomed soft dirt trails passing through a wetland nature preserve and arboretum.
Once through Collierville, next is Germantown - the route nearly touches our most frequent run, the railroad access road at CD Smith road - two miles of mostly straight road with very little traffic! Most of our virtual races have been here. We will be running here tomorrow!
After Germantown, the route continues on through our neighborhood and even crosses Stout, which is one of the roads we regularly run when we just get out and run the neighborhood, and then goes through the parking lot of our Kroger store. I haven’t measured but I think we pass about two miles north of my house.
Past our neighborhood, you’ll go past the Memphis International Airport and see a whole bunch of Fed Ex planes.
Next the route passes Graceland! Yes, just like the song, we’re going to Graceland, Graceland, Memphis Tennessee.
There’s no bridge on the map route, so we should probably divert North a bit to hit one of my other favorite runs, the old Harrahan train bridge across the Mississippi. This train bridge has been beautifully remade into a foot bridge, and it’s where my husband and I ran our first half marathon. And after that we’re in Arkansas!9 -
Great race @kgirlhart and nice swag goodies! Congrats on the PR!
Congratulations on your long run @quilteryoyo. Still amazed by how well you are doing post-surgery.
Love all the history and pictures @rheddmobile. Thanks for taking the time to do that.

Great racing and running, everybody!!! Congrats on the PRs and finishing positions. Nobody needs to know how many people are in your age group -- how do you think I occasionally finish first in mine?????
Cloudy, upper 40s F with a light wind out of the southwest today. Seemed like a good day to run hard, so I did. Set a new 7k PR; Garmin said I set a new 5k PR as well. Wasn't the first 5k, so it must have been the last 5k.
When you pop in here claiming your December 2021 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
PUT THE FUN BACK IN THE RUN!
Return to a good running weight of 175 lbs (second attempt)
2021 Races:
6/26 Direction Up 5k, Solon, OH
9/18 5k Run and Roll, Aurora, OH5 -
@rheddmobile thanks for the tour! The asylum reminded me of the psychiatric hospital featured in House, so I looked it up and you're right - that was also a Kirkbride building.2
-
Awesome racing and AG awards @Teresa502 and @kgirlhart! Exciting that you both got to run races IRL!
Thanks for the tour @rheddmobile! That's very interesting. I'm afraid I won't be such a great tour guide when we get to Dallas.
@Tramboman way to go getting your 7K PR!2 -
@katharmonic You are doing great! Enjoy the time with your mom.
Hahaha @ContraryMaryMary ! Maybe the correct number is six.
@kgirlhart Great race report. You sound like me, being indecisive about what to wear, where to pin the bib, etc. CONGRATULATIONS on your AG and overall Female placement and especially on your PR! You killed it!!! Nice swag and race pictures! You look so strong in the one where you are running.
@polskagirl01 Now I see it. She sure does blend in.

@ContraryMaryMary - I'm lucky to get a whole cup of coffee down before I have to leave for a Sunday morning run, let alone get in 5 cocktails! Sounds like a lot of fun though, except maybe afterwards. Not sure if more cocktails would help.
@kgirlhart - Awesome 10k report, placement and excellent swag!
Thanks for sharing @rheddmobile

@rheddmobile Thanks for the tour. I love the old buildings. Wish they had kept a little more of the historical aspects of the plantation house, but at least it wasn't torn down and it looks beautiful.
Thanks @Teresa502 ! I amaze myself sometimes too! So thankful it went so well.
@Tramboman ! Way to go on your hard run and PR's. That's awesome!
Nice long run @pfeiferlindsay ! Increasing slowly is the smart thing to do.1 -
goal - 20 miles
started - 4/24/21
4/24 - 2.5 miles. jog/brisk walk5 -
@Teresa502 congrats on your race and AG place! That's awesome!
@ContraryMaryMary I think 5 cocktails is about right for fueling pre-run. Lol. I've had 5 shots during a 5k and it was a load of fun, although I wouldn't recommend it for a regular strategy.
@kgirlhart great job on your 10k! Wow, PR and 1st in AG! Awesome job, you killed it! Love the flying race photo.
@polskagirl01 I love the Strava art. I'll have to try it when I get back home. Here in Daytona my art has been a straight line up and down the beach.
Thanks for the tour @rheddmobile4 -

I woke up to thunder this morning in Daytona Beach, so had to laze around a while contemplating what we wanted to do today. It wasn't looking too promising for the morning so eventually I headed down to the fitness center to run on the treadmill. I ran for 10 minutes on there, looking out into the pool/beach area. I realized the rain had mostly stopped so I ditched the treadmill and headed out to the beach. It was lightly raining for the first few minutes and it was very dark off in the distance so I was a little nervous to go very far from my hotel. But the more I ran the more it cleared up. It stopped raining and I ended up going a little over 2 miles out and then headed back. About a half mile from my hotel it started lightly raining again so I got a little wet but it felt really good. It was beautiful out there and I had the beach mostly to myself. With the exception of occasional jeeps driving up and down the beach - it's Jeep Week here in Daytona and the beach is famously one that you can drive on. We shared the beach fine though, it's plenty wide, and I got a couple of hang 10 gestures from the Jeepers.
I can't post pics right now but I'll try to post some later. Looks like it's maybe clearing up so I need to figure out my plan for the day.7 -

Sunday's are always busy days for me. I'm glad I decided to do my long run yesterday. When I got home from mom's today, I walked a mile on the driveway, just to be outside for a little while, and to keep the streak going. It turned out to be a very pretty afternoon/evening.5 -

Well I didn't make it out Saturday morning before work. I enjoyed the morning and ended up skipping my long run. I don't usually run on Sunday but I went out to a trail with my family today and ran with them today. It ended up being about what I would be doing tomorrow, so I'm just going to do my long run tomorrow and call it a switch.
Awesome local history tour @rheddmobile
Great race! @kgirlhart
Good job getting your race done virtually @RunsOnEspresso. I might have just gone home.4 -
Thanks @contrarymarymary,
@rheddmobile,
@Teresa502
@scott6255, @quilteryoyo, @whatmerunning, @katharmonic and @saramartiandale!
And thanks for all the interesting info on the Memphis area @Rheddmobile. When we get to Texas the route will go about 10 miles north of my house. But I doubt it will be that interesting. About all that is in that area are cows and pump jacks.
@saramartaindale I was visiting with a couple of the runners after the race on Saturday and one lady asked if I was running the Possum's Revenge. She said it is really nice and very scenic. I told her that I have never run trails but that I knew someone who was running it. I'm not sure which distance she is running, but she said it is a really good race.

6 miles this morning. Very warm, humid, and windy for a 5am late April morning (64F, 88%, 16mph). And legs felt very achy and tired. So took it very slow, and felt better by the end.

Did my long run this morning. I drove to the lake trail in my neighborhood for a change of scenery. I think part of the reason I am having a hard time getting motivated to run right now is that I am getting bored with my usual routes. The spots right around my house have been run hundreds of times over the last year + and I’m just tired of looking at them. This trail is only about 5 mins drive from my house so it’s a good option. It’s just far enough away that I usually only do it if my run is really long. The out and back to get there is about 10 miles before I even run the loop around the lake. So driving to a good start point seems to be a good option.5 -

The warmer temps this morning definitely affected how quickly my HR climbed today, but my pace was still a little faster overall compared to prior runs. So six of one, half dozen of the other, I guess. Was a nice day for sure, even the strong winds (since they are blowing in warm air).

Last day in Daytona Beach. I contemplated a sunrise run but decided sleep was more important when I got up and saw the sunrise was pretty but obscured by some clouds. It's a gorgeous day though so when I eventually did get up I went out and started heading down the beach.. The tide seemed highter today and the sand not as hard, so it felt really challenging. I decided to get off the beach and run across the bridge over the river/intercoastal waterway to the mainland/ I'd been eyeing this bridge as a place to run and get in a little bit of a hill in htis flat country. Today was probably not the best day for it as my legs felt kind of dead but I head over it nonetheless. It's a bridge that is high in the middle so boats can pass under so it's an uphill then downhill and the total across the river was about a mile. I also spotted a Starbucks right before the bridge and decided that I would end my run there and walk the beach back with an iced coffee. So that was good incentive to get at least 3 miles in before I got back to that point. It worked and I got in 3.6, got some water and iced coffee and enjoyed walking exactly a mile back to my hotel.
We drove around a bit today and now I'm relaxing by the pool for a while before I have to pack up and start the journey home.7 -

@quilteryoyo - He's 7, so he totally knows 85 miles is a lot of miles to run. I wonder if he was just messing with me, but yes, 4 was the better choice.
