How to make regular cheerios taste good?

This isn't as weird as it sounds. I'm 24 and still on my parents' insurance. Their insurance is much better than anything I can get right now through my university or the affordable care act. Relying on someone else's insurance doesn't mean you're living off them.
You don't need the policy holder's name to use insurance. If the OP is on the policy she'll have her own card and can make her own appointments. Mommy doesn't have anything to do with it unless she's paying for the co-pay. If that's the case then maybe it's time to become more independent and make some adult decisions to take care of your mental and physical troubles.
My mom would be paying for the co-pay. I don’t have money or a job. And no I can’t get a job. I barely have enough energy to go from my room downstairs to the kitchen. I am tired all the time and sleep constantly. There’s no way I could have a job right now.
I'll tell you what - If you were my child, and you were living with me at your age, and you did nothing but whine about taking pills/vitamins to correct a health problem that you had, and you dropped out of school and wouldn't get a job, and sat in your room all the time trolling forums on the internet, I would find you an apartment, put a little bit of cash in your bank account and pay your first couple of months rent and tell you that you're on your own after that. You could either make adult choices and get help for your issues and find a job and get back on track to a successful life, or you could make childish choices, not get a job, not make rent after those first few months, and get evicted from your apartment.
Also, you live under your mom's roof, so you go by her rules. She sounds like an enabler, IMO, because if I were your mom you WOULD be taking your pills, or you'd be getting iron injections, and you'd be eating the foods you were supposed to eat. Otherwise you wouldn't be living at my house, laying around and whining all the time.
Jeez this thread is infuriating.0 -

I would prefer for this thread not to be closed cause I need the advice. PLEASE. I come here cause I don't know what to do and don't get much help from my doctor/nutritionist. I'm really scared! I can't breathe (and yes I mean shortness of breathe) at times. I sleep all day. My hair is super thin and has bald spots. I just want my life back! But I can't take the supplement. There has to be a way to get the iron up through foods I do like. I'm sorry if I'm annoying people. You just don't know how hard this is. I just wanna get better but I don't know what to do.
Oh my God. Oh my GOD. I am about to take the elevator to the top floor of my office building. Kick open the metal door to the roof access stairs, climb the ladder. Jimmy open the door to the roof, wander out, high above Chicago and jump off.
Because I just can't anymore.
You don't want help. You DO know what to you need do, but you're making excuses for yourself. You want to hear what you want to hear without any real advice. You want your problems to be magically solved and to go away. You want something easy. Something that is in line with what you've previously heard. You want people to coddle you. OP...you don't want help.
But you know what?
They won't.
You have to work on it. You're going to need to get help. And until you honestly give a *kitten* about living your life, you're going to be a scared little girl trolling forums and making excuses. No one can help you at this point. You need to care enough to help yourself.
Until you do, you may say you're 21, but you have the mentality of a child. Seriously. In my former career as a teacher I saw children with more maturity and more ambition than you do.
Grow up, OP. Stop making excuses. Use Google, talk to a new doctor, and use some of the help that people have given you in the forms.
And for the love of everything iron, STOP saying "I've heard bad stories about _____". You hear bad stories about everything. If you're responding to threads on your phone, you're probably going to get cancer. If you step outside, you're probably going to get cancer. If you travel in a car, you could get into an accident and be seriously injured or you could die. If you eat food, you could choke and die. Et cetera, et cetera. It goes on and on.
Until you stop making excuses, face your fears, and get help, you're going to get worse. And until you accept the help people are trying to offer here, we're wasting our breath.
Kind of like I just did.

You're acting like eating red meat is such a chore...like apparently everything else that might be good for your anemia.
And no. It won't "correct it", as anemia is not a one-cure condition. You'll have to continue eating red meat regularly. Have a tissue.
It's not a chore. I just have a fear of food poisoning and I get scared of red meat. I worded that wrong though. I meant like would I start feeling better?
So now you are afraid of red meat? But you have been asking about red meat. Oh brother.BlondeBeauty5 wrote: »BlondeBeauty5 wrote: »kristinegift wrote: »OP, people have been trying to give you good advice, but you don't want to hear it if it doesn't mean you can eat cereal for all your iron needs. Honestly, if your anemia is that bad, you should prioritize your health over your aversion to pills/supplements. A little discomfort from taking a pill seems like a small price to pay for improved health and well-being. If 13 pages of responses hasn't proven it already, there's not some magic remedy to your problem, and you're either going to have to eat a *kitten* load of Cheerios or suck it up and do something out of your comfort zone to correct the deficiency.
Although that seems logical and I should prioritize my health, anxiety is illogical and doesn't work that way. If I were to be able to get the Flintstones down, I would freak out. I would pace the room and flail my hands and be trying desperately to get the taste out of my mouth. I'd probably freak out for 30 minutes to an hour and hopefully not stress so much that I'd throw it up. That's why I haven't taken the supplement.
This Can't Be Real
It is. People who don't have anxiety don't understand it.
Actually I have suffered from Anxiety. And I dealt with it. Like you should do and not make excuses.
I asked you a question, did you try and Google for iron rich foods?
I already have an appointment scheduled with a therapist who was recommended to me by my doctor. It's 2 months away. I've visited a couple therapists in the past who weren't any help. One of them said my anxiety was so bad, therapy wouldn't work for me. I can't go through this for 2 more months. My iron is too low and needs to get up now.
And yes I have googled iron rich foods. It doesn't tell me much. I need a diet of what to eat every day to achieve 200-250% and/or correct this anemia.
Let me guess... he said therapy ALONE wouldn't work for you, and recommended medication in addition to it.
And you refused.
It was a she. And no she didn't suggest medication. She just said my anxiety is so bad, the techniques she would help me with wouldn't work. She also had numerous bad reviews written on her. Some people said they were told the same thing.
So, being an adult, you saw that the first therapist was a QUACK, and found a new one, right? What did that one say?
The new one I haven't seen yet. The appointment is 2 months away but people don't believe me. Did you know it takes 3 months to get into an endocrinologist? Some specialists it takes time to see.
FFS. I'm not talking about an endo. I AM TALKING ABOUT A COUNSELOR, A THERAPIST, A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL.
Because your food issues are NOT NORMAL.
Also, stop skipping my questions and responding to innocuous stuff.
1) Why are you not eating mollusks? (Clams, oysters, mussels. You'll want to cook them because of your food poisoning fears, but then they are fine....and the highest food by gram in iron.)
2) Why are you not eating nuts and pumpkin seeds? (Even if you became a true VEGAN tomorrow, these foods would qualify, and are high in iron, far higher in bioavailable iron than cereal.)
3) WHY WON'T YOU TAKE A CAPSULE SUPPLEMENT? Seriously. No tooth staining or taste fears. You are an adult who swallows food. You can swallow a darn pill.
4) If you cannot do #1-#3? WHY HAVE YOU NOT GONE BACK TO STEP ZERO AND GOTTEN MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT?!?!? Because, seriously. If you are really an adult? You wouldn't freak out at any of this barring a treatable mental condition.
I don’t have food issues. Being a picky eater doesn’t mean you have food issues. But notice how when it comes to certain foods like fruits and vegetables, I’m not picky. I like most fruits and vegetables. Not all but most. It’s a matter of taste. Think about some foods you don’t like. If someone told you to eat them anyway and you refused, does that mean you have food issues?
1) I don’t like those. I don’t like seafood.
2) I can’t eat peanuts cause I’m allergic to peanut oil and get tingling in my throat for a couple days afterwards. I can eat cashews, almonds, pecans, etc but they only have 8-10% iron per serving. That’s not a lot compared to the amount in cereal. I don’t know what bioavailable iron is but cereal has way more iron than that, percentage wise.
3) No I can’t swallow a pill. I have tried. I can’t even swallow a small pill the size of an m&m. And judge or whatever. I don’t care.
4) I already explained this. My mom isn’t going to pay for therapy over my irrational fear of a chewable children’s vitamin.
Riiiight. You will basically only eat Cheerios, select meat, broccoli, and hotdogs. You fear food poisoning from red meat.
And you are poo-pooing every single goddamn suggestion in this thread because troll.
Take a fracking liquid or chewable supplement or cut up the solid pills so that they are basically 1/3rd of the size of a single Cheerio.0 -

That's what I've been saying! But everyone is saying it's not the same since it's not naturally in the food.
She is telling you to just take a supplement because iron added to cereal = supplement.0 -

BlondeBeauty5 wrote: »Not sure why I didn't think about this before but if you are already severely iron deficient the 18mg per day (for the average woman in this age group) NOR the 100% from the box of Cheerios is going to be enough to get your levels where they should be. According to Hematology.org you're going to need a minimum of 24 cups of Cheerios each day to get your iron to where it's supposed to be. You better start munching, Sunshine. The amount of iron needed to treat patients with iron deficiency is higher than the amount found in most daily multivitamin supplements. The amount of iron prescribed by your doctor will be in milligrams (mg) of elemental iron. Most people with iron deficiency need 150-200 mg per day of elemental iron (2 to 5 mg of iron per kilogram of body weight per day). Ask your doctor how many milligrams of iron you should be taking per day. If you take vitamins, bring them to your doctor's visit to be sure.
Then if that's the case how come my doctor wants me to take Flintstones and she said that would correct it? That's only 18mg of iron. My doctor actually told me that usually when someone is iron deficient, they just have them take a multivitamin like Flintstones. Not a harsh iron supplement like that.
I also read online about this girl who took 2 Flintstones a day cause she was anemic and her ferritin went from 5 to 26 in 4 months. So yes it does work. And that's only 36mg. Those harsh doses of 150-200mg are to get people up quickly. I don't care if I get up quickly or not. I just want improvement and to at least go from 5 to 10 and start making improvements and start feeling better.
Then dissolve the goddamn pill in a glass of water and drink it, since you don't seem to be talking about how it gave someone cancer.0 -
Ok. so I have mentioned this several times, but I will mention it again.
My son has a sensory processing disorder, and really struggles with tastes and textures. He eats no meat, few veggies/fruit. Very little iron rich food.
His pediatrician has him on flintstones brand chewable vitamins. He doesnt love them, but he dutifully takes one every single day. He drinks a beverage with it, chews it slowly to make sure there are no "chunks", and swallows it.
He is 6 years old. And yet some how he gets the concept that he must take this supplement in order to grow and be a healthy kid. And eating these fruity/chalky vitamins is not a treat for him. He does it because the doctor said he must.
Edited to add- my son has perfect iron levels.0 -

OP - you say you've been out of school for a year because of this. Is this what you want your life to be? Living with your mom, not getting an education, all because of fears of a flippen' gummi-vitamin and a refusal to seek help or a logical solution?
IF this is true, and I have my doubts, I don't think you're scared of the vitamin at all. You're scared of actually having to live an adult life. Right now, this gives you an excuse to not life as an adult, to not seek a career, to not have to grow up. And you have a comfy little crutch to blame it all on.
But seriously - do you want to look back on your life and see how you failed to make anything of yourself, because of a completely fixable, easily solved iron deficiency? Seems like a pretty sad life to life, really.
No it's not how I want my life to be and it makes me very depressed. But there's nothing I can do about it. My anxiety won't allow me to take supplements.
And no I'm not scared of living an adult life. I want to be back in school, to socialize with my friends, to date. All that is fun. Do you think I enjoy sleeping all day, getting shortness of breath constantly, being too tired to do basically anything? No I don't but I don't see a way to fix this since I can't take supplements.
That's like saying my fatness prevented me from losing weight or my depression prevented me from going to therapy and getting medication.0 -
Add raisins and nuts for a trail mix sort of thing.0

so if my son who has serious issues with textures and tastes, and high levels of anxiety about most foods, can get a supplement down, you can too OP.0

I don't believe the BS about what her doctor has advised her one bit.
Like previously mentioned I've suffered from Anaemia basically my whole life due to a blood trait - it was at it's worse when I was pref but is a constant thing. What is the reality of that for me? If not on the pill and having real periods I feel like crap for about 3 days a month and I'm exhausted. I can still stand up and get dressed those days and go to work though, so if we are to believe OP her anaemia is way worse than when I was almost needing a blood transfusion, never mind now.
I went to the docs for something unrelated and he instantly started quizzing me about my iron just from looking at me, prescribed supplements there and then and ordered blood work to be done. He then spent a good ten mins lecturing me on how important it was that I took the supplements, ate the right diet and didn't have things that interfere with absorption like caffeine. Honestly, I'm so used to having it I didn't really take much note and he could tell and he really really hammered it home to me how important it is.
OP apparently has much much more severe anaemia and the doctor told her to take a chewable, didn't prescribe anything and didn't tell her that if she doesn't do anything it poses a serious risk. No, just no.0 -

Yup. Maybe all those months of previous posting were like... warm ups. Get the creative juices flowing.
Although she sure didn't take the time to make sure she had her story totally straight. Especially since she basically keeps backtracking on things, e.g. saying that she doesn't eat the Chex part of Chex Mix and yet argues against this assertion later on in the thread. I think it's kind of sad that those of us responding have a better tracklist of all her crap than she does Negative points on her for that one.0 -
amusedmonkey wrote: »Nony_Mouse wrote: »BlondeBeauty5 wrote: »BlondeBeauty5 wrote: »If I eat red meat for 5 days straight, will it correct this? How much of it would I have to eat?
In general, I would say no. That you need to eat a proper well rounded diet that includes high iron meat on a daily basis indefinitely if you're *THAT* anemic for an unknown reason.
(because a normal menstrual cycle, as you claim to have, shouldn't leave you anemic)
Does being a vegetarian except for the occasional hotdog and occasional ham/turkey sandwich cause anemia? The RDA for iron is 100%. This is what you have to have a day to maintain your iron levels. If you don't, your body pulls from your ferritin stores to get what it needs. For years I didn't get 100% a day. At one point I was getting about 50% a day. This is the result of that.
I would keep eating red meat after 5 days. I just meant would I start feeling better and able to breathe again? And someone please tell me what it is about red meat and not ground turkey meat cause the iron percentages are similar so I don't get it.
Srsly??? One, if you're eating 'the occasional hotdog and occasional ham/turkey sandwich' you're not a vegetarian. Two, if being vegetarian caused anaemia my iron levels wouldn't be rock solid after 22 years of not having eaten meat of any description. Funnily enough, my iron was low in my teens, when I still ate meat (and in my early/mid 20s, when I didn't). I don't even put any effort/thought into getting enough iron to be honest. Maybe I'm just magic.
As to how I corrected the anaemia when I had it? Supplements.
She probably meant mainly non-meat foods. Yes that could cause anemia but that would be the B12 kind. I rarely ate meat and ended up with one because it was not possible for me to get enough B12 when I only had like 1-2 oz of meat/poultry/fish every 2-3 months. In this context though, you can get iron from many vegetarian sources so not eating enough meat is not it.I don't believe the BS about what her doctor has advised her one bit.

Exactly. When I was a wee bit anemic over and series of blood tests my doctor gave me a supplement, lectured me about eating foods high in iron and told me to take a multi-vitamin on top of it. Although I think OP may have mentioned that she goes to a holistic doctor, but I don't really know anymore as her story doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I have had issues with B12 anemia with tiredness and inability to hold up my arms for extended periods of time, but not with iron AND not for an extended period of time. I also did not attempt to solve my problem with cereal, nor was I eating anything near the 1700-2000 calories worth of real food that OP claims to be eating.
OP doesn't care about her health, because her problems are quite easy to solve.0 -

As far as I can tell, OP diagnosed herself with anxiety. I believe (if s/he is not the best troll ever) that a more serious psychiatric disorder is present. Not that anxiety isn't serious, I just mean...something that maybe should lead to inpatient care. Or a Troll Crown.0 -

Why don't you eat Total cereal then? Or buck up buttercup and eat some dang meat or take an iron supplement? You know what I don't like? Throwing up! You know what caused me to throw up? My prenatal vitamin! Guess what I did?! I took my dang vitamin for the sake my my baby and my health! It's time to woman up and stop complaining!
