People are saying something is seriously wrong because you refuse to take the obvious and reasonable steps to correct the problem, and instead latch on to weird measures like trying to eat more cereal.

What would those steps be BESIDES taking an iron supplement? I've read about so many people who can't tolerate iron supplements so they don't take them. Do you think they just suffer from anemia? No, I'm sure they find a way through food.

I tried taking a daily multi vitamin. I was too lazy and the only time I would remember to take it was first thing In the morning. Come to find out due to taking it on an empty stomach, the iron was hurting my stomach. It's been at least a year since I took a multi or really any other supplement. However, although this choice may not be all that smart (well, depends on who you ask), I have no medical symptoms and I sure as hell stand up to put on my makeup every morning. No, I don't suffer through anemia or anything because I don't like pills. If I had a medical condition, I would get help and solve it

Why do you even reference your silly doctor (YES SILLY) saying you should just get your iron through food only? Are they suffering like you are? Did you tell them the full list of your symptoms? Heck some of what you're describing... I wouldn't be surprised if a doc tried to hint hint admit you for a couple days to get things right, or at least request some follow up visits to make sure you're progressing nicely :)

Do you live with any family or friends? Near any? What do they have to say about all this???

You should try reading the thread first.

You should try leaving the thread since you've been done for a while and ready for it to be deleted

OP now I'm back to thinking that you are not even old enough to be on this site with the immature things that you post and now saying that Your mom won't pay for the therapist. You lied about having an appointment in 2 months, what else are you lying about?

Also, ironically enough, I had Flintstone vitamins in my kid's bathroom. I just took one. Still able to type this. Not running around flailing. Was it pleasant? Not particularly, but no worse than NyQuil or any other medicine.

Well you can think what you want but I am old enough to be on this site. Okay so I lied about that. That doesn’t mean I’ve lied about everything. I haven’t.

And exactly. It wasn't pleasant. It didn't taste good. I have a fear of throwing up and I'm worried I could throw it up. That's why I haven't taken it. And throwing up while having shortness of breath would be very terrifying.

Why did you ask a bunch of people how it tasted?

You're acting like eating red meat is such a chore...like apparently everything else that might be good for your anemia.

And no. It won't "correct it", as anemia is not a one-cure condition. You'll have to continue eating red meat regularly. Have a tissue.

It's not a chore. I just have a fear of food poisoning and I get scared of red meat. I worded that wrong though. I meant like would I start feeling better?

So now you are afraid of red meat? But you have been asking about red meat. Oh brother.

OP, people have been trying to give you good advice, but you don't want to hear it if it doesn't mean you can eat cereal for all your iron needs. Honestly, if your anemia is that bad, you should prioritize your health over your aversion to pills/supplements. A little discomfort from taking a pill seems like a small price to pay for improved health and well-being. If 13 pages of responses hasn't proven it already, there's not some magic remedy to your problem, and you're either going to have to eat a *kitten* load of Cheerios or suck it up and do something out of your comfort zone to correct the deficiency.

Although that seems logical and I should prioritize my health, anxiety is illogical and doesn't work that way. If I were to be able to get the Flintstones down, I would freak out. I would pace the room and flail my hands and be trying desperately to get the taste out of my mouth. I'd probably freak out for 30 minutes to an hour and hopefully not stress so much that I'd throw it up. That's why I haven't taken the supplement.

    This Can't Be Real

It is. People who don't have anxiety don't understand it.

Actually I have suffered from Anxiety. And I dealt with it. Like you should do and not make excuses.

I asked you a question, did you try and Google for iron rich foods?

I already have an appointment scheduled with a therapist who was recommended to me by my doctor. It's 2 months away. I've visited a couple therapists in the past who weren't any help. One of them said my anxiety was so bad, therapy wouldn't work for me. I can't go through this for 2 more months. My iron is too low and needs to get up now.

And yes I have googled iron rich foods. It doesn't tell me much. I need a diet of what to eat every day to achieve 200-250% and/or correct this anemia.

Let me guess... he said therapy ALONE wouldn't work for you, and recommended medication in addition to it.

    And you refused.

It was a she. And no she didn't suggest medication. She just said my anxiety is so bad, the techniques she would help me with wouldn't work. She also had numerous bad reviews written on her. Some people said they were told the same thing.

So, being an adult, you saw that the first therapist was a QUACK, and found a new one, right? What did that one say?

The new one I haven't seen yet. The appointment is 2 months away but people don't believe me. Did you know it takes 3 months to get into an endocrinologist? Some specialists it takes time to see.

    Where do you live?

I never want to move there.

I know some specialists do take a while to get in to see depending on how emergent your case is.

I had an unstable thyroid when I was referred to endocrinology. I was seen within a week.

My migraine specialist took three months for an appointment, though.

I can't imagine a therapist for a problem as severe as yours taking that long.

I've been to four... They don't. Especially since they don't require insurance

It could also be an insurance issue. Sometimes it takes a while to be permitted to see a specialist. I also imagine that OP might be more honest online in an anonymous forum than talking to a doctor in person. So perhaps the severity of her case is unknown to the proper people.

I've been to four therapists. All insured. None took months to get into. You can also pick your own therapists so like... She could have picked another one when she was told it will take two months. Sounds like excuses to me. And seeing one for anxiety isn't a specialist either.

Fine I don't have an appointment scheduled. But my mom doesn't wanna pay the money for my inability to take a "fing cartoon." meaning the Flintstones. She says how she has to pay all this money just for me to do simple things.

    Get a job?

    :D

Even if she did it doesn't mean she's going to eat them....

Yea. If you look at OP previous threads, she has basically said the only iron rich foods she will eat are broccoli, select meat, hot dogs and cereal.

Then why keep asking these questions when she can just increase her intake of broccoli, select meat, hot dogs, and cereal??????????????????????????????????????????????????/

Will this actually work or are you being sarcastic?

She's being serious. All you have to do is increase any of the sources of iron in your diet to accomplish your basic goal. I would still strongly advise that you take some sort of supplement, even it if is the flavored kind or one using a dropper.

    Yep! Because Math
I love when people comment and it's clear they didn't read any of the thread. Lol.

How have I interacted with her on earlier pages if I haven't read "any" of the thread? And try to keep up, the WHOLE thread is repeating things over and over again! Literally, the entire thread due to previous ones out there! Don't hate the playa hate the game, walk away if you don't have the stamina for it ;)

That was something to ask your medical dream team.

In general, I would say no. That you need to eat a proper well rounded diet that includes high iron meat on a daily basis indefinitely if you're *THAT* anemic for an unknown reason.

(because a normal menstrual cycle, as you claim to have, shouldn't leave you anemic)

Does being a vegetarian except for the occasional hotdog and occasional ham/turkey sandwich cause anemia? The RDA for iron is 100%. This is what you have to have a day to maintain your iron levels. If you don't, your body pulls from your ferritin stores to get what it needs. For years I didn't get 100% a day. At one point I was getting about 50% a day. This is the result of that.

I would keep eating red meat after 5 days. I just meant would I start feeling better and able to breathe again? And someone please tell me what it is about red meat and not ground turkey meat cause the iron percentages are similar so I don't get it.

Srsly??? One, if you're eating 'the occasional hotdog and occasional ham/turkey sandwich' you're not a vegetarian. Two, if being vegetarian caused anaemia my iron levels wouldn't be rock solid after 22 years of not having eaten meat of any description. Funnily enough, my iron was low in my teens, when I still ate meat (and in my early/mid 20s, when I didn't). I don't even put any effort/thought into getting enough iron to be honest. Maybe I'm just magic.

As to how I corrected the anaemia when I had it? Supplements.

    Get a job?

Has anyone asked the OP if she Googled "foods that are high in IRON"?

Dude, that's a great idea! I can't believe in 19 pages of replies, no one suggested that!

OP - how are your fears of things such as iron injections/drips and blood transfusions? Or simply put, the next step if your health is as bad as you say and you "can't" remedy it by eating the correct diet or taking a supplement.

Personally I'd rather swallow a pill than have someone else's blood pumped into me but hey each to their own.

I’m not getting an iron injection/infusion. I’ve heard terrible stories about those. I asked my doctor about those just out of curiosity and she said those are very rare and only done if absolutely necessary.

And there it is...FFS. Honestly, do you want to get better or not?? If your anaemia is that severe you're not going to reverse it easily or quickly with food*.

Question - is your doc a standard medical doctor or a holistic doctor? I am quite frankly shocked that they have allowed you to get to this point (if indeed they have, like others I don't think we're getting the full story here).

*ETA - but yes, eat any and every iron-containing food that you like. Lots of it. You're just going to need to do that for a long, long time.

No. Not very rare at all.

It's funny because my iron has been low for at least 15 years due to having Thallasemia Blood Trait. It was so low during pregnancy that I had to go to the doctors every two weeks to get blood works done and constantly told if it wasn't over a certain number (I forget now what that was as it was 10 years ago) that I would be having a blood transfusion. I must mention I was doing everything recommended to me - supplements and food wise.

You know what I managed to do during the time my iron was so low? Grow a baby, work 12 hour shifts and do a 1.5 hour round walk to the docs every fortnight in the heat of summer. If yours is so bad you can't even stand to get dressed you will have been told about the possibilities of injections, drips and transfusion as yours must be one of the worst cases known and believe it or not, anaemia can actually be fatal.

That in mind, I'd probably endure taking a chewable for a few minutes.

Also, I don't even know why I'm entertaining this but since you're university educated but had to come on line to ask if dry sugar would stick to dry cereal instead of just... Knowing... Or failing that, going into the kitchen and trying it... And then 20+ pages later are still whining about that and still haven't tried any of the other options available to you.

However, if plain Cheerios are the absolute only way in your mind of getting your iron up (which is basically the TL:DR of this thread) but taste so bad you'd rather let your hair fall out and drop out of school, why not squirt a liquid sweetener on them? Over here we have Sweet Freedom I don't know if it's available in the US. Or just some honey/maple syrup/ice cream syrup if additionally sweetened already sweet cereal is your only solution.

Blondebeauty... serious question. What if you were in a situation where your doctor told you "if you don't take this pill right now you are going to die in 60 minutes"!!
Would you be able to take it then? You'd force yourself right?
Well, if you truly want some kind of normal life, you are going to have to grit your teeth and do it. Just doooo it

So OP, last night while you sat there typing responses to all of us, all the excuses of why things wouldn't work, how many cups of Cheerios, of any kind, or turkey meatballs or hot dogs or whatever did you eat? Did you take any sort of action, whatsoever, to improve your condition, other than asking ridiculous questions and dismissing every logical suggestion while stating things like, "I heard that tastes bad". Or "I read on the Internet it might..."?

And finally, how often are you getting your iron deficiency measured?

FFS. I'm not talking about an endo. I AM TALKING ABOUT A COUNSELOR, A THERAPIST, A MENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONAL.

Because your food issues are NOT NORMAL.

Also, stop skipping my questions and responding to innocuous stuff.

    1) Why are you not eating mollusks? (Clams, oysters, mussels. You'll want to cook them because of your food poisoning fears, but then they are fine....and the highest food by gram in iron.)
    2) Why are you not eating nuts and pumpkin seeds? (Even if you became a true VEGAN tomorrow, these foods would qualify, and are high in iron, far higher in bioavailable iron than cereal.)
    3) WHY WON'T YOU TAKE A CAPSULE SUPPLEMENT? Seriously. No tooth staining or taste fears. You are an adult who swallows food. You can swallow a darn pill.
    4) If you cannot do #1-#3? WHY HAVE YOU NOT GONE BACK TO STEP ZERO AND GOTTEN MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT?!?!? Because, seriously. If you are really an adult? You wouldn't freak out at any of this barring a treatable mental condition.

I don’t have food issues. Being a picky eater doesn’t mean you have food issues. But notice how when it comes to certain foods like fruits and vegetables, I’m not picky. I like most fruits and vegetables. Not all but most. It’s a matter of taste. Think about some foods you don’t like. If someone told you to eat them anyway and you refused, does that mean you have food issues?

    1) I don’t like those. I don’t like seafood.
    2) I can’t eat peanuts cause I’m allergic to peanut oil and get tingling in my throat for a couple days afterwards. I can eat cashews, almonds, pecans, etc but they only have 8-10% iron per serving. That’s not a lot compared to the amount in cereal. I don’t know what bioavailable iron is but cereal has way more iron than that, percentage wise.
    3) No I can’t swallow a pill. I have tried. I can’t even swallow a small pill the size of an m&m. And judge or whatever. I don’t care.
    4) I already explained this. My mom isn’t going to pay for therapy over my irrational fear of a chewable children’s vitamin.

    You know what? ENOUGH.

Suck it up, buttercup. You are going to HAVE to do something you don't liiiiiike or don't waaaaannaaaaaa. Quit your whining and do what has to be done. You aren't going through chemo or suffering from some really debilitating disease. You just have anemia. You can't just slug around your parents' house forever, you have to get up and get a job and work until you can go back to school.

Can't swallow the pill? Then it's either liquid or injection. Boo hoo you "heard" some things about those, if it was really a concern, you'd learn to swallow the pill. You don't have a choice, here. You MUST choose one of the options that will get you up and moving and functioning as an adult. Enriched cereal is fine for mild anemia, but if you only had mild anemia you bet you could hold down a job, FFS.

This is not about what you "want" or what you "like." You don't have the luxury of being "picky" or "skeered of a pill." Eat the clams. IDGAF if you don't like them. Eat beef. Your so-called "food poisoning" fear doesn't even make sense...almost nobody gets food poisoning from steak. Take a supplement. If you are that skittish about injections and unwilling to take the liquid, you'll swallow the pill. You have to pick one of those three.

Welcome to adulthood. You have to do things that aren't 100% sunshine and roses. 20+ pages of whining about nothing has worked my last nerve. No wonder your mother has had it. Bet she's regretting letting your get away with being a "picky eater" as a child, ugh.

OP can just wither away and die with how many problem s/he has with food. Frankly, why is it our concern? Clearly all of the problems are with the OP and it has no effect on us. Why are we trying so hard? It should be obvious that s/he is not willing to even try anything and is just seeking attention from complete strangers.

Misery loves company, and it seems the OP is just trying to get any many people on his/her bandwagon as possible. This thread has gone on for long enough. The only thing that will help the OP now is for him/her to get himself/herself to a psychologist because this is 100% in his/her head and nothing we can do or say will ever help his/her hoplessness.

She probably meant mainly non-meat foods. Yes that could cause anemia but that would be the B12 kind. I rarely ate meat and ended up with one because it was not possible for me to get enough B12 when I only had like 1-2 oz of meat/poultry/fish every 2-3 months. In this context though, you can get iron from many vegetarian sources so not eating enough meat is not it.

No I want to eat the regular ones cause they have twice as much iron as the honey nut and my iron is really low. I saw a nutritionist and she wants me to eat more iron rich foods and Cheerios was on the list she gave me.

If there's a fruit (raisins?) on the list, add it to your Cheerios. Problem solved. Also, drink OJ with it to help you absorb the iron.

Ok so I've tried to read most of the thread

Has anyone suggested a smoothie with a ground up iron suppplemt in it? Strawberry, banana, powdered iron pill. Hell throw some plain cheerios in there.

Or make these frozen strawberry bars and throw some ground up iron pills in there (one for each popscicle) Pleanty of vitamin C from the strawberries and the lemon juice. Sweet and yummy popscicles with lots of iron. No swallowing pills, no liquid supplements to stain your teeth. What could scare you about these?

Crush the freaking Flinstones chewable. Pulverize that sucker. Stir it into some orange juice and chug it down. Or sprinkle it into some applesauce.

    DONE.

    Honestly.

I don't even know why I bothered at this point. I've pretty much decided that I don't believe you.

I don't think that someone with anemia to the point of quitting school, all day exhaustion, and hair loss would be told to take Flintstones chewables to correct it.

Oh for heavens sake, get her some flavored cheerios or get her chocolate syrup or honey!

Go to the store and pick one and OP stop arguing with your self. There is no WIN WIN!

24 pages and counting....... this does not end well!

Perhaps it is a bit sociopathic of me, but honestly I kinda feel this way as well. If she won't take any suggestion, won't take any reasonable measures to improve herself, won't chew a damn vitamin, then seriously why should we (as a society) even care? Just waste away and die and stop being a drain on the system at this point.

No it's not how I want my life to be and it makes me very depressed. But there's nothing I can do about it. My anxiety won't allow me to take supplements.

And no I'm not scared of living an adult life. I want to be back in school, to socialize with my friends, to date. All that is fun. Do you think I enjoy sleeping all day, getting shortness of breath constantly, being too tired to do basically anything? No I don't but I don't see a way to fix this since I can't take supplements.

B.S. There's just too much BS for this to be real.

Your Doctor tells you that you're terribly anemic and you're so sick from it you can't get out of bed..... but their advice was a Flinstones Chewable(which you won't do anyway). If this is true, find a new Doctor, this one went to Med School in Bedrock. If a real doctor is that worried about your anemia they would have prescribed a supplement, given you a list of iron rich foods, and lectured you blue in the face telling you that this is unhealthy and damaging your body. Their prescription would NOT be a Children's Vitamin.

You're so anemic you can't get out of bed but you don't WANT to get your iron up fast. You want to just take regular amounts and you'll feel better...eventually.

    More BS
You say you're not happy and want to make a change but every single idea anyone has given you has been shot down with "I can't" or "I won't".

You won't get the shot... you read bad things about it.
You can't take the pill.. you can't swallow it
You won't take the pill.. it has side effects
You won't chew the chewable.... it might taste bad
You can't see a therapist to fix your problems... mommy won't pay for it
You won't eat read meat... turkey is good enough since it's just about HALF as much protein as beef
You won't work through your anxiety... even though you're depressed and this isn't how you want your life to be
You won't take the liquid iron because it MIGHT stain your teeth.... but you're OK with having bald spots from anemia
You won't get the iron shot...... your medical dream team told you it was rare and shortness of breath/bald spots isn't emergency enough to warrant it. Oh yeah and you "heard" bad things about it

Finally, you want to get your iron up from cereal. You're SURE you can do it that way. From all your other threads it's been MONTHS and you still haven't even gotten the cereal.

If you really wanted your iron up you could have gotten it done by now. You didn't. You've stuck yourself into your miserable existence, get used to living there. You're not leaving it anytime soon.

    This thread is hilarious.

    Wtf.

Have you tried vanilla almond milk instead of regular/skim milk? It adds flavor and has fewer calories than cow's milk.

Eat Chex mix instead, only it has to be homemade bc the cereal has more iron than the mix.

Unless she makes them with only Cheerios, she won't eat it.

Not true. Where did you get that idea? I'm just trying to add in more iron with foods I like. So I was trying to make the Cheerios taste good but I guess it's not possible since if you pour sugar on them, it likely won't stick.
When you said that when you eat Chex Mix you'd always leave all the Chex pieces at the bottom and eat everything else.
