God you guys really do post a lot. I've had 800 posts to catch up to the last few times I've logged on. I've read all the posts in this thread and I refuse to miss one now... I'm committed
Sorry about your degu @Italian_Buju, sounds like you gave him a great life!
@noaddedsugarx Please please don't think it was your fault. Hope she recovers0 -
This is when I wave the white flag and admit there is no way I can keep up with y'all. I take off for less than 24 hours and I'm 700 posts behind and you're probably talking about something interesting like area rugs in Bilbo Baggins' Bag End house (and why they are boring) and I can't even imagine trying to keep pace. So what's new? I got the Usually Lovely Lady Nuffer to join MFP last week but I haven't yet showed her the forums because I'd be embarrassed that she saw I made it to page seven hundred and sixty mumble and that would thoroughly explain why the laundry is not folded.0

I cry every night because the feeling of my thighs rubbing this much kills me0

@KylerJaye they're adorable... I have to ask... does Plankton ever look happy?
lol awww! and no, he really doesn't!
on the extremely (like seriously once a year) occasion that he's running around with his tongue out panting, we're like OMG! look! plankton's being a real dog!!
he's my grumpy soul mate
I thought maybe he just disliked being photographed and that was his camera face. Good thing I don't have a dog like that or I'd spend all my time shovelling treats and toys at him, thinking I needed to cheer him up. Smart tactic, Plankton!Glinda1971 wrote: »

The first thing I thought of with tiny holes was a colander. Specifically, The World's Most Useless Colander, which I happen to own and it's only good for draining something really fine because it has TINY HOLES. (My SO insists on using it to drain pasta, which is incredibly ineffective, and I hate watery pasta but I can't seem to steer him toward one of the other two perfectly normal colanders. Sigh.) Anyway, the colander is annoying but not exactly horrifying or freakish so I assume no one is googling pictures of my colander.

Nice. So this is turning into one of those "do you see the old woman or the young woman?" "do you see a blue dress or a gold dress?" things. And it means I may end up looking just to see which camp I'm in.

@ythannah, look at this picture. It's a benign image, not a gory shock-value photoshopped image.

That is true and that image makes my skin crawl.
I'm sad that when you google trypophobia all you get is the bad photoshopped images, instead of a variety of icky things.
You're not alone the photoshopped pictures were horrifying but while I can look at that picture it still makes me feel physically sick to my stomach and I cringe and have to look away I do not like it one bit!
I didn't realize it was a thing, I think it started back in grade school in a science class they showed us a picture of some sort of parasites that had burrowed (absolutely hate that word, ick!) in to someone's skin creating the lotus flower look and I about lost it then. Now I know better! Learn something new everyday I guess!0 -

I can't do spiders. Period. I took kiddo and nephew to the zoo last week and there was a tarantula on exhibit. Naturally, both kids wanted to see it, I had a panic attack! It can be embarrassing, but not as much as my catfish phobia (and I mean the actual fish) lol.
You should see me at the lake. I am constantly moving my legs, and if something brushes against me I run to the shore so fast... I'm terrified of fish touching me. Any fish.
So I'm not the only one! I had to write an essay about classical conditioning and phobias in psychology once and I wrote about my catfish phobia. My professor actually told me later he had never heard of that before and thought it funny, but unique haha!
I have a really strange, but also extremely severe phobia that I'm almost sure nobody else shares, but I'll never ever admit to it in this thread. Very few people even know about it, maybe 4-5 including my sister and husband. :-/
I have trypophobia, arachnophobia and I'm afraid of heights - but just ones that would maim me, not ones that will kill me if I fall.
The trypophobia is the weirdest one. Why am I afraid of things with small holes in them?
Oh, so things like crumpets? or when you go to the beach and there are those little holes everywhere where the little crabs come out of? I didn't know that was a phobia!0 -

If it does heal itself they don't know what her level of function will be after.
I'm sick with worry and there's nothing I can do. It was 12 hours in hospital before she got seen by a specialist after lying there drowsy with a confirmed bleed on the brain!
I can't help thinking somehow that this is my fault and I should have been watching her (I was in my bedroom getting dressed) even though she is always steady on her feet and hasn't had a problem with stairs at least recently anyway. I've always wanted to be like 5'10. I'm so jealous of tall women, so gaining even an inch has me thrilled lol
Why? I am only 5'7" and it is insanely difficult finding a man of appropriate height (yes i am that shallow). Though I do not think I would want to be shorter... so never mind. Tallk people ftw
I'm 5'9", and my husband is the first guy I dated that was taller than me. For whatever reason, the only men who were ever interested in me were always shorter than me. ESPECIALLY when I was out dancing!
I'm 5'9" too, and my husband is 6'7". Many years ago I tried to date a guy who was shorter than me, but I just felt huge next to him and I couldn't imagine taking that feeling into the bedroom. Shut it down.
5'9" here too! Yeah, I couldn't do the shorter guy thing either. The thought of bending over to kiss him freaks me out! And yes, I realize that's irrational!
I never personally had a problem with it, I just always found the GUY had a problem with it (consciously or subconsciously). I was told numerous times by various guys that I wasn't "allowed" to wear heels. Uhhhhh excuse me?! I will wear heels if I choose to, mister!
I think we've gone here before...but my husband is totally cool with me wearing heels. Since I'm already 2+ inches taller than him, I feel gigantic. But if he doesn't care and I don't care, whatever!
That's fantastic! Only a jerk (like the guys I used to date) would care about it anyway
I managed to get involved with some real winners but they never cared that I was taller in my heels.
The SO is a full 12" taller and LOVES me in heels, the higher the better as far as he's concerned. When we're out in public it doesn't make him look quite as tall if he's got a 6'2 woman beside him, and he doesn't have to bend over so far to kiss me.I've also learned the hard way that the horrible drink they give you for CT scans with contrasts can give you diarrhea for three days (really hoping it's only three days, this is getting old).
I was on heavy antibiotics for a couple of weeks last summer and apparently digested nothing, judging by my output during that time. Lost 5 lbs. So there may be an upside, lol.
That is *the* thing about antibiotics that I dread, if/when I ever need to take them...
...as for the upside -- eating spoiled food would result in the same outcome, so... for anyone thinking they might be 'missing out' -- worry not, for there is an alternative means via which you can 'participate' in 'the festivities'... lol
I always wonder if I should even bother to log it.
Sure! -- And you can 'get creative' with naming it... something like... "broccoli cheese -flavored laxative'...
Omg, haha.0 -
@Glinda1971 I really think I may have nightmares tonight after googling "trypophobia" and hitting images oh my lord how disgusting. I do not think you're weird at all I think I have the same thing and never knew what it was!

My husband is the best about anniversaries, birthdays, etc. Last year, he had the high school art teacher help him make me a soup bowl. It says "Soup for my Soulmate". I love it! I tell myself every year I'm going to start shopping early and find him the perfect gift. It never happens. I ended up buying him a ceramic statue at the garden center. He deserves so much better!
My husband has got better at gifts over the years, but I have had some real doozies (set of home phones for my 40th, for example ). I've got much better at saying "For my birthday, if you'd like to get me a present, I'd really love X". Or I tell my daughter. She's very good at relaying 'hints' and he's relieved because he can get something he knows I'll like.
My husband is amazing at picking gifts for me. I, on the other hand, am the worst gift giver on the planet. Seriously. I always default to perfume because I just can't think of anything else... Even if I know the person really well! :-/ I'm just really, really bad at it.
confession: i am awesome at gift giving. i'm the crazy type that remembers six months ago you said you really wanted something, but could never justify getting it for whatever reason. i'd bust my *kitten* to make sure the gift i gave, meant something to the person, fit who they are, or allowed them to indulge when they themselves never would/could. i rock the giving of gifts.
actual confession: it took a really long time, and a lot of secret hidden internal disappointment, to realize no one ever puts in that type of effort for me. ever. (nobody cares, boo hoo, i know. yay personal pity party) but it actually really hurts, when you really dig deep and think about it.
so i quit. i quit making little notes to remember things about people, i quit spending hours on the net to find the out of print japan only release of an album that someone just would "die" to have but could never find it. no more care packages to people far away. i stopped picking up things here and there all year round because i knew it was just PERFECT for someone. i just quit.
and it's difficult sometimes. i'll see something and be like OH! PERFECT! but then i stop myself and just keep moving. and it's really lame that something like this is making me tear up while i'm at work, so i shall stop whining now before it really opens the floodgates.
I'm sorry you've gone through all of that. Ever thought of putting those awesome skills to use, though? You could become a personal shopper or consultant. People can contact you about whom they are shopping for, what their tastes are, their collections, etc. I think you'd be great at it!
you are seriously awesome, thank you
Well, that truly is a talent! I mean, for some of us, here we are, married to someone for years, whom we spend oodles of time with and yet when it comes to gift giving my first thought is, "Ummm....". Blank. Over think it. Waste too much time. End up with something boring.
My husband and I have pretty much stopped giving each other gifts. We have everything we need. Although this past Valentine's Day he surprised me with a Bose sound system for my iPhone. I got him a card. Ugh. Thankfully I saw it before he came home so I sprinted off to the liquor store to buy him a bottle of Patron. Not equal to a Bose, but it sufficed.
We've been married 15yrs next week and I can. guarantee there will be no gifts exchanged. Christmas and such have devolved into making sure the kids pick gifts for the opposite partner, but other than that... eh. I'm not into jewelry, flowers, perfume or any stereotypical girly stuff. I literally wear only my engagement and wedding rings, which are very understated and "me". We're not even card people, heh.
i absolutely detest flowers.
most ppl who know me, know this.
of course, last year for admin day my boss gave me a bouquet of flowers. in my head (which of course i couldn't say out loud) all i could think was, after five years, You Don't Know Me At All!!! lol
Why don't you like flowers? Is it just cut flowers? If so, I kind of agree, because it does seem wasteful, even though I love them. I never get given them because my husband has hay fever.
I love flowers too. I'm so sorry your husband has hay fever and can't surprise you with them.
Mine did tonight, although it is my birthday tomorrow.
Wow, my birthday is tomorrow, too. Happy birthday.
Happy Birthday to you both!!0 -

Did you have a catfish incident or does the look of them just gross you out? Curious to know as I've never heard of anyone being phobic of a catfish. I am a spider liberator myself, since we don't have any that could actually hurt you in the UK. As a kid I used to go camping with the Girl Guides, and the camp loos were inevitably full of wildlife. Even the Guide Leader would have me go in there to liberate all the spiders first. There should have been a badge for that, it's a useful life skill!0 -

Twist of irony, hubby works in pest control, can handle just about every type of insect/spider and rodent. He's absolutely terrified of flying bugs (bees, flies, etc), and this is busy season for "bee jobs" and the like. It's absolutely hilarious to see this grown man running around and shrieking at a fly or bee.

my husband hates bees & wasps too. One time we were stopped in traffic in a construction zone and a wasp flew into the car. He screamed like a girl jumped out and ran around the car. Nothing is as funny as seeing a grown 7'2' dude run around a car in traffic because of a flying insect (I was mildly embarrassed because everyone was looking at us but it was still funny)FluffySandwich wrote: »

That is cute! I don't mind bees so much, it's hubby that has the "beef" lol. On that note, my kid has begun to act like him. We have I'm guessing one of the last remaining McDonald's with a play place in it, and she insists we eat there. They leave the windows open, I mean it's SC it can get as hot as the devil's asscrack, so inevitably flies and other flying things wander in and out. Holy hell, the meltdowns!
Me! I love spiders! They eat dirty, nasty flies that like to hang around in poop all day and then try to land on your face. Yay for spiders!
Agreed!0 -
I have to do my weekly food shop today and although my other half is not a fan of cakes or biscuits, he is a total ice cream fiend so I pick him up some every week (he is not dieting with me). Every week I spend a good 5 minutes staring at the lollies and tubs I refuse to buy myself while feeling slightly envious of the way my OH can guilt-free devour his. Even more so since I spotted a new Daim bar chocolate tub.0

Can't really say anything to make it better, but could not let this one slip by!0 -
@KylerJaye they're adorable... I have to ask... does Plankton ever look happy?
lol awww! and no, he really doesn't!
on the extremely (like seriously once a year) occasion that he's running around with his tongue out panting, we're like OMG! look! plankton's being a real dog!!
he's my grumpy soul mate
I think I love your dog. He reminded me of my grumpy but adorable grandpa.0 -
Bread is my weakness!! I loooove bread, sometimes I have to put all of my willpower into not eating the whole loaf with a side of brie.0

I confess, I sometimes latch on to one particular aspect of a food to try to justify it to myself as somehow being hugely beneficial.
For example, I'm keen to eat plenty of calcium at the moment, so found myself drinking about a pint of chocolate milk (and not the low fat kind either) because calcium. I could just drink standard milk and forgo all the extra sugar/calories, but that's boring!0 -
Really, 200 posts overnight?noaddedsugarx wrote: »It's been the most traumatic day. I've mentioned here before about being a full time carer for my Grandma who suffers with dementia.
Today she had a bad fall from the top to the very bottom of the stairs. She hit her head and has suffered bruising and bleeding to the brain and fractured her skull in two places along with breaking her elbow. The Doctors say there's nothing they can do but to wait it out and see if the bruising on her brain heals itself within the next 48-72 hours and her condition is going to get worse before/if it gets better.
If she doesn't recover from this I don't think I'll be able to forgive myself.
It's not your fault. You can't chain her to the bed or the chair when you have to pee or change!nicsflyingcircus wrote: »Susieq_1994 wrote: »Today is my anniversary and I confess that I am sad that this means I won't be able to go on my weekly bike ride with my girls bike group.
13 years here, we stopped giving each other presents years ago... Sometimes if he needs something practical he'll get it but that's pretty much it, lol. He could get me stuff though, anything nerdy and I'd be happy, but he doesn't.nicsflyingcircus wrote: »Susieq_1994 wrote: »Today is my anniversary and I confess that I am sad that this means I won't be able to go on my weekly bike ride with my girls bike group.

i absolutely detest flowers.
most ppl who know me, know this.
of course, last year for admin day my boss gave me a bouquet of flowers. in my head (which of course i couldn't say out loud) all i could think was, after five years, You Don't Know Me At All!!! lol
Why don't you like flowers? Is it just cut flowers? If so, I kind of agree, because it does seem wasteful, even though I love them. I never get given them because my husband has hay fever.
is it my browser? why duplicate posts, why?
I don't think so. It always takes me 30 seconds for the page to load when I reply to this thread, for some reason, and I even got a triple post once!
Confession - my bowels have been extremely noisy (I still have diarrhea. So infuriating) but I'm still planning to go to the gym and I really hope it's not going to be embarrassing.
Second confession - I made myself some 'cheesecake' in a bowl for breakfast (ricotta mixed with jello instant pudding mix with a graham cracker crust broken in pieces - it's actually not bad at all, filling, and with decent macros) hoping it will help me resist cheesecake at lunch. Still not making any promises.
Third confession - I still don't see the big deal about this thread being 'stickied'. First, 99% of people won't read that stickied thread. Second, if they do, they will probably not be interested in reading a 700+ pages thread anyway. But I do agree that I don't really see the point of having it in there.
And happy birthday to the birthday people!
@Italian_Buju sorry for your loss.0 -

If page count is a factor, there are plenty of "who wants to see who naked" discussions in Chit Chat that are probably more worthy than this.
I have no problem with the existence of this thread. I just stand by the belief that suggested reading (ie, stickies), should be educational and pertain to the topic of the forum. As far as fun items to give people a reason to return to the site, that's what Chit Chat is for. But that's just me, don't let me rain on your parade. Obviously this thread is popular, just not informative.
"Informative" is a matter of opinion. I, for one, feel VERY "informed" when Pancake announces that he has to pee or we get health updates on various pets.
I now know 100% more about the Muslim religion than I knew a week ago. And this is a good thing.
I've learned a bunch of terms for unusual phobias.
I know how many more exotic varieties of Pop Tarts and peanut butter and breakfast cereal exist in countries other than Canada.
Knowledge is good.
Sure, informative is a matter of opinion. And I also agree that knowledge is good, I seek out lots of it! I simply fail to see the value of directing members, often times who are new, who are seeking information and knowledge about General Diet and Weight Loss (the purpose of this particular sub-forum) to this particular thread. And thank you for making my point with examples of non-diet/weight loss things your learned from this thread.
It was tongue in cheek, as I'm sure you realized. Although I do think Pop Tarts and peanut butter and cereal fall into the diet category.
There have been hundreds of diet/fitness/weight loss questions and tips posted throughout this thread, you just have to wade through 783 pages to find them. Several of us have learned a rather effective upper body workout right here.
A few effective tips, among 783 pages, warranting a status of a helpful thread. Got it.
For the sake of ceasing to derail the purpose of THIS particular thread. I confess to having 3 IPAs last night, BEFORE hitting the weights.
Well, hello, Snarkmeister...
Listen, we aren't suddenly convening before some sort of MFP Supreme Court (and you aren't some sort of Chief Judge (though you do appear to be embracing a role akin to that of a Prosecuting Attorney)), and we don't suddenly need to justify the actions of someone (let alone, someone who has nothing to do with this thread!) doing something we never requested in the first place (and, frankly, involves a reality some of us don't *want*) -- and so we shouldn't be expected to have you or anyone else 'set up kleig lights', and expect us to 'subject ourselves to interrogation' (as though you were some sort of self-appointed attorney, judge, and jury... or some such entity hellbent on seeing a perceived form of 'justice' done)...
If you don't want to participate in the thread, then please, by all means, move on...! -- that is, unless you need to rant about something (other than 'this', or 'us', that is), in which case you are welcome to rant away...!
The world has enough people p*ssing on others -- there's no need to add to *that* 'status quo' (which, not-so-ironically, is part of what this thread is about -- assisting, being helpful, not judging, etc.)...
(...and yeah, my not sprinkling your sudden sarcasm-laced insults with 'rose petals' is not exactly representative of 'this thread'... however, it is a rare thing for rudeness to 'swoop in' on this thread... and I can't stand behavior that reminds me of my favorite bumper sticker -- Mean People Suck...)
Hi there aggressive one! I have no desire to see this thread removed, pretty sure I made that clear. But I stand by what I believe to be a valid point regarding MFP choosing this as a helpful thread within the context of the sub forum in which it exists. Not attacking the participants of this thread, not the purpose of this thread, simply stating that it's purpose isn't necessarily on point with the purpose of why a thread should be a sticky. Sorry you have such a personal attachment and felt offended as a result, but I prefer logic over emotion.
she's not agressive, she's being honest.
if you're struggling so much with the purpose of this thread, and can't see how it might help newbies who are normally ripped apart for the most simplest of questions elsewhere, that's on you, not us.
There's no struggle, the purpose of this thread is not currently related to General Diet and Weight Loss. Again, I have not said it serves no purpose, it just doesn't serve the purpose of this sub forum to the point of being a sticky. New members should have a central location, supported by MFP, to find valuable info to assist them in gaining the knowledge requires to successfully navigate through the contention that occurs in the forums. There are no questions in here that are being clarified, so I don't follow your argument of it being a safe haven for newbies. Is this designed to educate? I don't see it if it is. If you have a rational argument as to what this brings to newbies as far as helping them reach their fitness or weight goals, I'm all ears, but don't chastise me for making a valid comment that none have been able to debate within the context of my point.
Off the top of my head from just the past few weeks:
Binge eating related to stress, hormonal issues, depression, and death in the family
Overeating due to travel for work or vacation
Undereating due to underlying disordered behavior
Dealing with a family member who potentially has an eating disorder
How to handle food situations when you have out of town guests
Unlogged food, the potential psychological impact, and whether or not it's better to log it or ignore it
Workout schedule interruptions due to illness or injury
Advice for starting new workout routines or expanding existing ones
Recommendations comparing and contrasting different lifting programs
How to deal with alcohol in relation to eating and overeating
How to deal with alcohol addiction and its impact on health and weight
Exactly which of these is not relative to General Diet and Weight Loss?
You also hit the nail on the head
Thank you for actually engaging, I appreciate a good debate, especially with one who cares. Do you feel that a single thread, addressing all of those topics, quite briefly, and scattered throughout 789 pages, is helpful to the average new member? I really am not picking a fight, and appreciate different points of view. Here's mine, in more detail, since a couple seem to either care, or are perturbed by my presence. And my confession, is that my point of view is from a former newbie, who came to this sight with many assumptions, unknowns, and misguided beliefs that I held to be true. It took me a long time to understand what people talk about, and fight about, in these forums. And longer still to piece together how that all applies to what I am trying to achieve. I simply want to see new members have an easier time than I did. So here is the picture, as it is in my head....
New member joins, hoping to lose weight and gain knowledge about how to reverse whatever caused them to be where they are today. They head to the forums, to read up on current discussions, since that's what forums tend to be about. They signed up, and signed in, for the purpose of learning how to make a plan. The MFP goal setting confused them somewhat, so forums seem to be a good place to go for help. They bypass the chit chat, because they are here for a purpose. General Diet and Weight Loss seems a reasonable place to start. But they are quickly overwhelmed by numerous threads debating the validity of various acronyms they don't understand. They see a link, right at the top, created by MFP staff, "Most Helpful Posts", so they figure, good place to start, especially if it's suggested by MFP. Where I lose the story is how, with 789 pages of randomness, even if there are some good topics in here, is this thread useful enough to be given the status of "most helpful posts", as it equates to General Diet and Weight Loss. Especially for the newbies that we all seem to care about??? I accept that this thread has value to many. I accept that mental reprieve is useful, especially for the overwhelmed. The responses and number of pages alone are evident that this has become a repository for that. But, with complete honesty, I can't see how it is one of the most helpful threads in regards to THIS particular sub topic. It doesn't focus on General Diet or weight loss, and is nothing more than hundreds of pages of what happens to be on someone's mind at that point in time. Let the thread live on, but don't raise it to the level of most helpful, when there are still very simple topics that new members don't understand, and would benefit by threads clarifying the basics, without clutter.
I can't make it any more clear than that, so if anyone really wants to continue a debate, which I am happy to do, I offer to do it via PM, or a new post. Hope everyone has a pleasant evening.
While I enjoy this thread a lot, I agree that it shouldn't be stickied. But if I can believe the main forums, it was actually a long term member that nominated this thread as a joke, because of the frustration members were having with changes to the stickies. And so here we are .
I think a few were perturbed because of your initial post. But I think you've been pretty upfront and fair in your other posts. I see you in the forums quite a bit, because I'm there quite a bit , and we both know they can be intimidating and some times a little rough. So many find this a helpful and safe place to talk about all kinds of problems. And we're protective of the thread .
