May Total: 103k
May Goal: 100k
January Total: 131k
February Total: 159.5k
March Total: 183k
April Total: 126k
Monthly average: 149.875k
Next year when you pop in here claiming your December 2019 mileage, what accomplishments will you have made?
Run at least 4 5k races.
Get under 30:00 and a PR for 5k.
Average at least 135k per month, which would put me over 1,000 miles for the year.
Run the Year Team: Five for Nineteen
Today was supposed to be longish and slowish, but the heat and humidity made me change my mind. Hope that's a sign of getting smarter as a runner instead of getting tired and lazy. Upcoming week is going to result in shuffling my training schedule around anyway. Did meet the low May goal; if I can squeeze in an 11k run, will get to 135k for May.
2019 Races:
4-13 Shine the Light 5K - 31:12 chip time; First Place male 65 and older
6-1 Freedom 5K (Will be off the schedule due to another commitment)
6-30 Strides for Starfish 5K5 -
10 ugly miles this morning. Felt like the hottest run of the year so far. Took it slower than almost any weekend run, and felt horrible. Don't know why. Probably thinking too much about the new job starting Tuesday. Have worked for the last 20+ years basically by myself. Now am going to be part of a 6 member development team. Going to take a lot of getting used to. Actually really dreading it 😣.

A cut-back week for the long run. I intended to do at least 7-8 miles but the humidity was getting to me. And the loop I picked got me back to my car at 6 and I was not able to resist the urge to stop. The temps were not that bad and there was a nice breeze for most of it, but I still felt really heavy and slow. The river along the route was high and there is some minor flooding (pics under spoiler) which could get worse with the weather forecast.
Getting close to the 100-mile goal for the month, so I should be able to exceed that even with tapering.8 -

Pretend they are all runners. And it is so humid here, figure it is for you too.

Depending on how it is done it could be great, or bad. I left my last job because they introduced "Extreme Programming" which is where all the devs share a TABLE. Not a cube, or a desk, but a table. Not only that it was TWO DEVELOPERS PER COMPUTER - AT THE SAME TIME.
I hard noped right out of that. Stunk too. I really liked working there before they changed to that model. Most of their senior and experienced programmers left when I did. Was a massive brain drain. I would feel bad, save I spent months fighting the change and warning them what would happen if they pushed ahead. I pulled the eject handle about a month or two before my department was going to make the switch. Ah well, my new job pays 10% more at least.
In my new job, I am part of a small team, but we have our own desks, and computers5 -

A lady I sometimes run (part of) my Saturday run with: She stated she went to a retirement party for her husband's co-worker. She stated, "guess what the topic was that evening?" I said, "Trump." She laughed and stated, "no, it was you!" She explained that I was the topic, not by name, but by "that woman that runs all the time."
My giggle for the week, besides the cattle stampedes I have caused because cows are not used to humans running down the road.9 -

That sounds like a HORRIBLE idea! Who would think that would be a productive, efficient working environment? If they had any idea how most software developers work, they would NEVER have suggested that. Good for you (and everyone else) for showing them what you thought of that, and got the heck out of there!1 -

I'm not a developer but even I can tell making developers share computers would be a hard nope. Seriously did they just not listen to reason at all in a new "trying to be hip" thing or something?0 -

Good luck at the new job! So brave to be changing course after 20+ years. I too am thinking about a job change but a little too chicken (20 years at the same hospital). So I greatly admire your courage.
It was humid yesterday when I ran....not so much hot, but it felt extremely difficult to pick up my feet and propel forward. I might change it up and run on some nearby trails.
Tomorrow I will be "stuck" on the northwest part of town after my shift due to the Indy 500. I won't be able to get home until 1 p.m. So plan to run in the morning after my shift, and then sack out at the house that I am planning to sell later this year.5 -

May running total to date – 6.50
Nominal May mileage goal: more than zero
Real Goals: Recover from stress fracture without making it worse.
Today's notes – Set out to do run/walk intervals. Temp was 78° F (26°C) when I left home, so I took water even though I wasn't going to be out very long. Ended up taking two sips while running, drank the rest after I got home.
I thought about run 3/walk 1 or run 4/walk 1 intervals. The early part felt good, and I had been going 5 minutes before I checked whether it had been 4. Then I thought about just running. When Garmin buzzed at mile 1, I made the snap decision to turn this into intervals of run 1 mile, walk 1 minute.
Did 2 reps of that, and it started raining right when my 2nd walking interval started. It's warm, so no big deal to run in the rain; but I dislike walking in the rain. Oh, well. Beats sitting on the couch. Walked out my minute, and started the third running interval. By the time I got to the mile, it had stopped raining; but I was so close to home that I didn't think it was worth a walking break. So that third running interval turned into 1.27 mile.
Taking a DNS for the 5K today was absolutely the right decision. Yes, I ran a bit over 5K; but the chance of my noticing a HR above 140 and a pace below 7:30 and making myself slow down (as I did today) would not be very good in a race environment. Baby steps, and training discipline. Right now, faster and harder is not better.
The foot feels as good as it did yesterday after the run. I have some training soreness in my quads of all places! I guess maybe I should have figured out how to do some squats when I was in the boot. Oh, well. I've got walking lunges and cone touches, the quads are getting some strength work.
I'll see how the quads and the foot feel tomorrow. Then I'll either run an easy 3 tomorrow and take Monday as a normal rest day, or take tomorrow as a rest day and re-evaluate what to do on Monday.
I'm still a long way from being able to run 26.2 miles, but I think I'll get there by November 3.

They are getting kids just out of college desperate for their first "real programming job" to do the work now. I know someone that is still working there (she does not have a strong of a resume as me and has not gotten out yet) that told me it is going pretty much exactly as expected.
I had tried a very informed approach. Sent them surveys and studies backing up my position that it was an insane idea. They pretty much ignored me.
When HR asked we why I was leaving at my exit interview I told them "I used to love working here, but not enough to go down with a sinking ship." heh.3 -

Look up Pivotal software. They did it there and claim all kinds of success - which I doubt. Home Depot copied that model, and the guy that enacted it there, left before it could fail and went to my old workplace as CTO or some other C-level title I do not recall for sure. He brought the model with him. I suspect he will ditch that job and move one before they reap what he sowed too.2 -
10 miles today. I wanted to do more, but even before I started I knew it was not likely. This was the weather report:
(those are temps in F in case you thought I lived on Mercury...)
Got the 10 done at about 2-3 mins a mile slower pace than normal... but on the flip side at least I did not need to wear my gloves and hand warmers! It is the small things...5 -

Ye gods - my husband can’t even handle being in the same COUNTRY as his fellow devs.
Fifteen years ago all the programmers for Epic had their desks in the basement in the dark like troglodytes. Now as I understand it the fad is for all offices to look like a Starbucks with big shared tables. But how do you share a computer? Seriously, my husband wants me to ask you, how is that theoretically supposed to work?
Edit: nvm, looked up Pivotal and read wiki article on Pair Programming. It may or may not work for code writers (supposedly 95% of them claimed to prefer it, but it doubled coding time) but sounds insane for working artists.3 -
Made myself run yesterday. Wasn’t feeling it. My head was, and still is, stuffy. But I knew I would actually feel less stuffy once I got going. Like everyone else here from Texas, we are feeling the heat and humidity this week. Even though I was only doing 4 miles, the temps and the head cold drove me to the treadmill where I could at least get some AC. I survived, but it was definitely a challenge. I considered bailing several times, but made myself stick with it. Glad I did the run in the end.

I’m doing well towards my monthly goal, but I missed my Thurs run. I forgot to pack my running shoes on Thurs when I packed my bag, so I made that run up this morning. I thought about just doing the six that were scheduled for the long run, but I was glad that I didn’t do the extra mile before turning around on the out and back. It was a hilly route and wasn’t too bad, but it had rained all night and was warming up quickly so the water coming up from the asphalt made it tougher. For whatever reason really felt that run today, so hoping a shorter run tomorrow will stretch things out.

Actually, in real life, it is horrible. Way more than doubles cost in man-hours is far more bug-prone, and quickly lowers morale among developers. Every developer, without exception, that I personally know hates it and looks for work elsewhere. In jobs situations like I left they have to "grin and bear it" until they secure paychecks elsewhere.
Plenty of research backs that up too. I sent bundles of it to my prior boss. Doubt they ever read it. I think it might work better for front end developers, but I do not live in that world.
As I said, I punched out of a job I was happy at because of it. I would likely go back and even take the pay cut if they would reverse this decision. Trust me, in the trenches it is bad. Devs are smart enough to "grin and bear it" while their livelihood depends on it, but we talk to each other.

@Scott6255 Have they asked for any ideas/feedback from the front line staff ( you ) about the so called Development Team? I like my personal space at work , at home every where. Give me an outline of the work, give me the software and get out of my way.

I don't do software development but I do a lot of equipment configuration and programming. I have 2 laptops for my work - the reason is operational efficiency. ( everyone in my unit has at least 2 Laptop's )
We all know that certain process's/upgrades require multiple steps requiring that the Programming Computer not be disconnected/interrupted. So while PC #1 is doing it's thing I can continue with other activities using the other computer. When the first computer Beeps ( volume to max ) I can then start the next step of the process's with out worrying about cross contamination error's. Strange how some CTO etc can move from Corporation to Corporation with ideas that haven't been Time Tested and Field proven.
An example of that is the No Zero's Educational Model that some school districts had adopted that are now coming back to hurt the students as standard entry test's don't lie. Imagine not handing in any work, not writing test's and still getting a passing mark. Once in University/College/tech schools you can quickly see who has done the work and who hasn't. Some Canadian Universities were even starting to place certain School Districts/Schools on a Admission review list because students coming out of them were getting Uni Exam marks significantly below the average and had higher drop out/failure rates.1 -

I was on vacation this week so I am hopelessly behind on this thread. I will try to go back and catch up, but since I did get a couple of runs in over the vacation I thought I would go ahead and update. I will say that running in the mountains is a definitely different than running in Texas. I am really not used to hills. But it was fun. I only ran twice, but both runs were good. The first run was on Wednesday and I ran 2.66 miles. It was nice and cool. Garmin says it was 54F, but my weather app said 48F when I started out. I saw a rabbit and a couple of deer. I did not see a bear. I was on the lookout because the air b&b owner said they have a mama and baby bear near their house. I stuck to the road and never did see the bears. I was kind of hoping we might see them one day while driving in our car, but I was glad I didn't see them when I was out running by myself. Thursday it was cold and drizzling all day so I didn't run. I did get up early and run on Friday. It was cold too. Garmin says 36F but my weather app said 33F feels like 23F when I started out. Normally that is too cold for me, but the sun was shining and I knew I would spend most of the day driving so I went out. It was great. I was glad I had my sleeves. I wore the sleeves on Wednesday and ended up taking them off. On Friday I wore sleeves and a jacket and ended up taking both off too, but I was glad to have them at the start. I ran 3.12 miles. I saw some turkeys but no bears. I am back in Texas now and the forecast for my run tomorrow is 70F-73F if I get out and run before 10:00 am.
