Whole grains are bad???
In this video a doctor tells us various health foods are actually bad and one that sticks out to me is whole grains and oats I've seen a few of his videos and he basically tells you anything bread related is bad Are whole grains really that bad for you? I always thought they were healthy https://youtu.be/oB_PPQ5cHyE

UK government obesity strategy
Ok everyone, what are your thoughts on the newly announced UK (?just England as health is devolved) anti-obesity strategy. For those who haven’t seen it or are not based here the gist is: The government are stressed that as a population we’re just too big (over 60% of the population are at least overweight and nearly 25%…

The internet needs newer Isagenix content
Silly me. I ordered the Isagenix Basic Pack before I did my research. THEN I looked into it and so much of what I found was older stuff. All newer threads and comments were...weird. Feel free to share your honest experiences under this thread with no judgment from me. Everyone is different. My “experience” lasted four days…

why cant some people realise that to lose weight i i have to be in a calorie deficit??
i was arguing with a grown woman who’s done slimming world and lost weight and we had an argument about how you need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight and she wasn’t having it. she was like well i lose weight while eating in a surplus!! well you clearly weren’t in a surplus and how would you know if you were if you…

Why do people keep defending sugar?
Sugar (& other highly processed carbs) has no nutritional benefits, so why are so many people defending it? Fruit & veg are good for you because they have high levels of nutrition, and the fibre content helps to mitigate the bad effects of the sugar content. So although a lot of people lose weight while keeping their sugar…

Why is tracking steps a thing?
I honestly don't get it. Why are people tracking how much they walk around during the day doing normal activities? I suppose if you're always sitting that it could be a motivator to get up and move, but when I see people complain that their Fitbit isn't recording the steps they're taking when grocery shopping I am…

Does dieting lead to greater weight gain in the long term
I'm not advocating this view, but its one you often hear in the media: that "diets don't work" and in the long term cause you to gain more weight than if you never went on the diet in the first place. Is this just "fat logic", or is there something to it?

My dad’s on another ridiculous fad diet...
My dad has tried just about every kind of diet/ lifestyle you can imagine. For about two years he was strict keto, ate super high fat, lots of meat, etc. Swore he was going to do that the rest of his life. Now he’s been vegan/vegetarian for about 3-4 years, except the past few months he’s been getting more restrictive and…

Bagels or doughnuts?
Let's say you have 300 calories to spend and you want something round with a hole in the middle made from flour. Bagel, or doughnut? My favorite bagel shop shut down about two decades ago. They just opened back up in November! I go once or twice a week. Nothing like a good, fresh bagel. It doesn't even need to be toasted.…

is MFP more important than marriage?
well, not really a debate (I hope! :o ) Today is my wedding anniversary and coincidentally I recieved this message from MFP on receiving my 7 year MFP poster badge: Wow! Seven years. Your community relationships have outlasted most marriages. Do most marriages really last less than 7 years these days?? (or was that…

Eye opening article in Jy 25 2020 New Scientist about undocumented micronutrients
I know we know little about nutrition compared to what there is to know, but a recent article in New Scientist talked about efforts to identify and quantify some of the thousands of undocumented chemicals in what we eat. They describe a database building effort that lists 70,000 nutritional compounds in some foods, more…

Have you been both overweight and underweight?
What do you think is more offensive, people commenting about you being too big or people commenting about you being too skinny? I’m neither overweight or underweight but I don’t think “skinny shaming” could ever compare to the abuse that fat kids and adults receive. Being skinny is still praised worldwide and even if you…

"Thin people have more gut microbes than fat people"
"Thin people have more gut microbes than fat people; having hungry microbes may at least partly account for thinness." Says Bill Bryson in the book "The Body". What are your thoughts?

Face mask or no face mask?
Hot topic which seems to get everyone riled! I have been wearing a mask for ages, before the UK made in mandatory in shops. I will also use one in the gym; I’m asthmatic and get dreadful hay fever so I’ve frequently used face coverings when exercising outdoors. Not the most comfortable thing but no biggie to me.

Weight Loss Medications: For or Against?
I have seen quite a bit of redditors discredit and slam the use of prescription weight loss drugs like phentermine, it has me wondering how a larger portion of the health/fitness/weight maintenance community feels about it outside of the ever-so-angsty reddit community. In my experience, I was very fit and in shape, even…

How a vegan diet could affect your intelligence
I'm really curious as to what you all think of this article on vegetarianism/veganism, essential nutrients and deficiencies. My view on it: It seems to me that it is a far, far more balanced take on the issue than the title implies. It's an in-depth look into the nutrients that are either unavailable or less available in…

Access to Covid-19 tracker???
Not sure where to post this but I would like an answer from someone in the know. Why does MFP want access to COVID-19 tracker app? I was looking through the app & found it. Seriously, why?

Kitchen layout and weight loss
Do you think the layout of your kitchen and home could help or hinder weight loss? For example, many people like open concept where the kitchen and living areas are combined, so the kitchen is always in full view. Does this tempt one to snack and graze more than in a home where the kitchen is “out of sight, out of mind”.…

Thin Privilege or Lifestyle Consequences

"setpoint" vs healthy BMI and intuitive eating with PCOS
Curious people's thoughts on these... Is it possible to accept a setpoint weight that you are genetically determined to have even if it's not a healthy BMI or body fat percentage? I'm a nurse so I know there is a lot of scientific evidence about the detrimental effects of obesity on CV disease and endocrine effects. But…

Are Kettlebells Enough?
With the gym shutdowns I got into kettlebells, and I LOVE THEM. The debate at hand; are they enough? Enough I will define as increasing muscle mass and performance. I'll kick things off with a YES. For starters, even when lifting heavy, kettlebells are more efficient. Not dealing with racking, unloading, waiting, moving…

How does Covid-19 affect Obesity epidemic?
So my gym closed due to the pandemic which I pretty much expected, and obviously the first question in my head was what I was going to do to supplement lack of gym time. I have stayed active by playing basketball in the driveway with my daughters, and kickboxing in the basement, however when we are being told to literally…

If a calorie is a calorie, why do we see this?
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/epdf/10.1002/oby.20460 So 1400cal in both groups, first BF ate 700 / 500 /200 for breakfast / lunch / dinner and the D group ate the opposite. And the kicker: That's massive. "Eat breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince and dinner like a pauper."

Help settle an argument- coffee as a diet aid
TL;DR at the end Before I get to the debate question, here's a little background info- I am a 40 year old female, starting weight 340 lbs, current weight 300 lbs. I have been stuck at 300 exactly for about a month or so, but have lost several inches. I lost the first 20 lbs from about July 2019-November 2019, and then…

Is Dairy linked to acne?
Growing up i believed acne was caused my dairy products but I just watch Jeff Nippard's video say that studies are inconclusive and not enough data support the fact that acne is caused by dairy products. Women mostly! But men can chime in too, what do you think? I recently just switched to a lower hormone count…
